Safety in Ethiopia

Hi there, We’re planning a trip to Ethiopia in the summer of 2026 with our two kids (17 and 19). We’d love to hear recent firsthand accounts from travelers about how safe they felt. We’ve checked the French government’s travel advisories, but we’d prefer more concrete feedback. We’d also be grateful for insights from locals on which regions are recommended—or not—so we can travel with peace of mind. We prefer backpacking, using public transport, and avoiding agencies. That said, we’re wondering if a guide might be necessary for this trip. Thanks in advance for your input!

Hi there,

Yes, as I mentioned to another member yesterday, for Ethiopia, you really need a good local guide. Without one, you might not have access to many places and could end up in unsafe situations because it’s important to be able to communicate with locals and know where to go.
