Has parking become the biggest challenge of van travel?

Hi everyone, I’ve been traveling by van for several years now, and lately, I feel like parking has become one of the trickiest parts of life on the road. Between municipal bylaws, local restrictions, tourist pressure, and sometimes a lack of tolerance, finding a spot to park peacefully—especially at night—takes more and more planning. Personally, it’s no longer the route or the destinations that trip me up, but rather the stress of parking without causing a fuss or bothering anyone. I’m curious if you’ve noticed the same thing in the areas you visit. How do you adapt these days to park your van or campervan without hassle? Do you plan ahead, use private spots, dedicated areas, or try a different approach? Thanks in advance for your feedback and experiences!

Hi there,

It’s true—parking is getting trickier. We’ve been traveling in a motorhome for over 35 years, and we’ve seen the number of vehicles grow while restrictions multiply. For overnight stays, we often go to a France Passion host, a motorhome area (except CCpark), or municipal campgrounds. It really depends on whether we need supplies and if we’re towing the motorcycle—then we opt for more secure spots. Happy travels and discoveries!

Hello, Thanks for your feedback—it’s really interesting to hear from travelers with so much experience. It’s clear that the context has changed a lot in recent years, with the increase in vehicles and local restrictions. As you mentioned, existing networks like France Passion or certain *aires* are still useful, but they don’t always meet all needs, especially when it comes to precise location or peace of mind, particularly for a stress-free night. For my part, I’ve also noticed that more and more travelers are turning to private solutions with locals, when possible, to avoid bans and local tensions. This often allows for more peaceful parking while respecting residents. For those interested, there are platforms that connect van or motorhome travelers with individuals offering parking spaces, like https://placedeparking.com. Thanks again for this exchange—it’s exactly this kind of feedback that helps us adapt our ways of traveling today. Safe travels to all.

Hi,

I don’t get the parking-space.com site—it doesn’t match what I was looking for. It’s just ads, not actual spots for our road trips.

Hello, Thanks for your clarification, I totally get your point of view 👍 Indeed, we’re not talking about the same use case: your approach is more about wandering and spontaneous discovery, whereas this kind of solution is mainly aimed at those looking for a specific place to spend the night, especially when rest areas are full or local restrictions complicate things. It’s clearly not an alternative to nature spots or tourist stops, but rather a complementary option to use occasionally when you prioritize peace of mind or safety, especially in tense areas. Thanks again for your feedback—it’s really interesting to see different practices depending on the region and travel styles. Safe travels!

Hi there,

I lived on the road in a camper van for 4 years and I know this problem well in the Basque Country. I even got kicked out at 2 a.m. on a deserted parking lot where I wasn’t blocking any entrance or anything. Anyway, otherwise, I hit the beaches off-season and then head inland when I’m in France.
