Nous envisageons d'effectuer en octobre prochain le trajet Morondava / Mahajanga (Majunga), ou l'inverse, par la piste et en 4x4 (un seul véhicule, un Range Rover de 20 ans avec un moteur diesel Nissan).
Aucun de nous n'a été au delà de Bekopaka et je suis donc à la recherche d'informations sur la suite du parcours.
Au vue de la carte, il semblerait que ce trajet nécessite 5 jours :
Mais ma carte n'est pas récente ... et je sais bien que, sur un tel parcours, élaborer un plan de route un peu près fiable sur la base d'une carte uniquement est totalement illusoire ...
C'est pourquoi si certains d'entre vous ont eu l'occasion de faire ce trajet, tout ou partiellement, en 4x4 et si possible il n'y a pas trop longtemps, je vous serais reconnaissant de bien vouloir me donner votre avis sur la faisabilité de ce projet et les étapes envisagées.
Je suis bien entendu également preneur de toute information concernant :
- les endroits où c'est impossible de passer en 4x4 (ponts démolis, bacs en panne, rivières profonde sans gué, etc, ce qui nous évitera de rebrousser chemin),
- les endroits où ça risque d'être un peu délicat de passer en 4x4, avec si possible des précisions concernant la nature des difficultés (au moins, nous saurons à quoi nous attendre ...),
- le nom des localités disposant d'une station service approvisionnée ou d'un revendeur de gasoil (nous emmènerons bien sur 50/60 L de gasoil dans des jerricans, mais c'est toujours utile de savoir où se procurer du carburant).
Si de plus vous avez le temps de me communiquer les noms et localisation des hôtels qui vous ont plu sur ce trajet, ce serait vraiment amical de votre part.

J'ai effectué le trajet Morondava/Maintirano en 2009. Pas de problèmes particuliers mais j'étais en moto. prévoir du carburant, et je pense plus de temps que vous prevoyez. En revanche Maintirano/Soalala/Mahajanga était, à l'époque, quasi impossible sauf à disposer d'un véhicule amphibie. Je ne connais pas - le seul segment du tour de Mada que je n'ai pas fait - mais il m'a toujours été présenté comme irréalisable avec un véhicule. Il y a(vait) des bacs qui desservaient le sud de Mahajunga.

Merci pour votre réponse concernant la portion Morondava/Maintirano, elle confirme ce qui m'a été dit récemment. Pour la suite du trajet, nous verrons ce qui nous sera dit à Maintirano et, si c'est vraiment impossible de rallier Mahajanga, nous rentrerons à Tana par Tsiroamandidy.

c'est ce que j'avais fait: Maintirano/Morafenobe/Tsiroanomandidy. De mémoire, nombreux segments de piste caillouteuse pénibles et "agressifs" en moto, sans doute moins en 4 roues (???). L'exploitation de schist bitumeux dans la région à dû changer la configuration des lieux (routes) en construction à l'époque.
Si, d'aventure, vous vous engagiez à rallier Mahajanga par la cote, merci de communiquer.

J'ai fait en 4x4 Suzuki 413 une partie du trajet Namakia (après Soalala) Katsepy 80 km de piste, plusieurs fois entre 2010et 2012 .Ce tronçon en saison sèche ne presente pas de difficultés, il est meme assez roulant jusqu'a Katsepy. Il y a un hebergement très sommaire a Namakia chez Mde Zaza .Sinon en effectuant un détour de 15 km sur Mitsinjo vous trouverez un autre hebergement.
Prevoyez beaucoup de carburant car pas de stations mais des depots.(A confirmer tout changeant très vite a Mada)
De Katsepy a Majunga il n'y a plus a ce jour qu'un petit bac, l'autre après réparation n'est pas encore en service.Ce qui vous obligera peut etre a attendre quelques jours a Katsepy une place pour votre vehicule.
Ne vous fiez pas uniquement aux cartes , les tracés pistes et routes pouvant etre en realité impraticables.
Bonjour à tous, je déterre ce sujet presque 2 ans après pour vous donner des informations qui ont 20 ans.
A l'époque j'essayais de faire le tour de Madagascar en moto. J'ai donc essayé de faire ce trajet dans le sens Morondava->Majunga. C'était faisable en moto mais difficile. En voiture, pour avoir tâté du 4x4 quelques années plus tard, je dirais que ce que j'ai vu était franchissable mais très bien équipé, plutôt à 2 voitures et avec du temps pour trouver les franchissement de rivières.
Pas de gros problèmes pour aller jusqu'à Maintirano même si on se sent un peu au milieu de nulle part. Quelques passages de rivières un peu profonds à reconnaître à pied. De Maintirano à Tambohorano, la difficulté est de trouver l'itinéraire. Et après, c'est encore pire, assez galère pour trouver la route de Berevo Ranobe. A Berevo Ranobe, le pont était détruit et ça a été très compliqué de traverser. Mais c'est possible à gué en voiture car le député du coin était passé quelques jours auparavant et c'était l'événement, car aucune voiture n'était passée depuis longtemps. Malheureusement, je suis tombé en panne d'allumage à 5 km au nord-est du village. J'ai dû renoncer et ramener ma moto en charrette à Zébu jusqu'à Tambohorano (14 heures), en pièce détachée dans un Twin otter jusqu'à Maintirano, avec un convoi de camion jusqu'à Tana (3 jours) et en 404 bâchée jusqu'à Tamatave où j'habitais.
J'étais allé en reconnaissance à Majunga et d'après les infos que j'avais, Majunga-Besalampy via Andranomavo ne posait pas de problème.
Pour l'hébergement, il y avait un ou 2 hôtels corrects à Maintirano. Après, plus rien. J'ai dormi chez des gens à Tambohorano et Berevo Ranobe. Aucun soucis pour trouver un toit. Pour le carburant, c'est aléatoire mais il y en avait à Maintirano et Tambohorano.
Pour l'année prochaine, fin juillet, je recherche un 4X4 avec chauffeur/guide au départ de Majunga. Mon circuit: Majunga, Soalala, Tsyngy de Namoroka, Katsepy,…

Hi there, we’ll be in Mozambique in early December 2026 and we’d like to travel from Vilanculos to Beira by car or bus to reach Beira airport. After that, we’re planning to visit Gorongosa National Park before flying back to France from Beira. We’re planning a 4x4 trip from Belgium to Central Asia, passing through Georgia, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
For these countries, our national insurance obviously doesn’t cover the vehicle, so we’ll need to get local insurance.
Will it be a problem if the vehicle is registered under person A and the national insurance is under person B? Both A and B will be in the vehicle, and both will be listed as drivers on the insurance.
When we get the local insurance, if we again list A and B as drivers, does the order matter? Could we get stuck at the border for this reason?

Were they All Terrain tires or more "standard" ones like all-season tires, for example?

From your experience, is it necessary or even essential to book campsites in advance, or do you always manage to find a spot to pitch your tent?
We’ll also have the option to sleep in the car without pitching the tent.
Does that give us the flexibility to stay outside a campsite for a night here and there?

Last year, we had a fantastic road trip in the Anti-Atlas and High Atlas using Erfahren maps, but unfortunately, they don’t cover the area we’re interested in this year.

We’re planning a 13-day family road trip in Morocco this July, with six people in a Toyota Prado 4x4 (renting in Marrakech).
We’ll alternate between bivouacking and small hotels/riads depending on the stops.

Our goal:
Atlas Mountains + desert + dunes + plateaus + valleys + a bit of coastline.
We’ll cover about 1,700 km in total.
We’re planning:
Bivouacking in the Chegaga/Iriki area
Flexible for the rest (booking the day before or same day)
Sand gear: traction plates, compressor, tow strap, roof rack
Questions:
Is the Zagora → Chegaga → Iriki → Foum Zguid crossing in July doable on our own (single vehicle, no guide)?
Are there any truly technical or risky sections between Chegaga and Iriki?
Does the overall itinerary seem manageable in 13 days without rushing?
Any suggestions for great bivouac spots or particularly interesting stops along this route?
The points on the route are provisional overnight stops. Some spots will include two nights in the same area.
We’re used to off-road driving, but not yet in the Moroccan desert.

Day 1: Sesriem to Mirabib
Day 2: Mirabib to Swakopmund – visit Swakopmund, overnight in Swakopmund
Day 3: Sandwich Harbour – overnight in Swakopmund
Day 4: Kayaking with the seals + the living dunes – overnight in Swakopmund
Day 5: Moon Landscape, Henties Bay + Cape Cross – overnight at White Lady Lodge in Brandberg
Does this itinerary seem realistic to you? Is Cape Cross really worth the trip? If I had to choose between Cape Cross and kayaking with the seals, which would you recommend?

I’d love to visit Gonarezhou National Park—I see there are two sectors: the Mwenezi Region in the south and the area around the Runde River in the north. Should I cover both sectors or just focus on the northern region?

I’m leaving in November for about a month with the goal of reaching Senegal via Mauritania. I’d love to share this trip with someone who wants to discover Mauritania and a bit of Senegal... and also experience life on board a 4x4 in the desert or bush, sometimes sleeping in the vehicle or in hostels/small hotels for comfort. I’m looking for a rental company (or several) that offers single-cab 4x4 pick-ups with a fitted camper cell for two people. I’m specifically after a vehicle with an indoor shower for extra comfort ;)

While browsing the forum, I came across the Chilean rental company Holiday Rent. But do you have any recommendations for Argentine rentals?

My trip to South Africa is starting to take shape.
However, I'm struggling to figure out the route through Kruger Park. I can't seem to find the information I need about getting around.
Coming from the south, I plan to arrive on Day 1 in the early afternoon at Malelane or Crocodile Bridge.
Do some shopping in Malelane (or Crocodile Bridge main area) and stay overnight outside the park.
Leave on Day 2 at 5 AM for the park. Explore the southern part of the park.
Stay overnight around Skukuza or Lower Sabie. (We don’t want to stay in one of the park’s big camps. We’re looking for a lodge around 200 €.
Head out on Day 3 for a self-drive safari, maybe as far as Orpen.
We’d like to stay in a private reserve on nights 4 and 5.
We’re not sure which one or how to get into a private reserve. Do we need to exit Kruger Park?
On Day 5, we’d like to leave to visit Blyde Canyon (on Day 6).

When I arrive in Divundu, I’d like to head straight to the Khwai area early in the morning to one of the campsites in the Khwai Development Trust. Is the drive doable with a good 4x4 in a day?
We’ll spend 2 nights in Khwai, then 2 or maybe 3 nights in the Moremi area (Third Bridge/Xakanaxa/Mboma) before heading back to Maun to wrap up our journey.

Have you traveled from Morondava → Tsingy between May 1st and 5th?
Was the journey doable and safe?
Did you have access to the Grands Tsingy, or just the Petits Tsingy?
