Mon compagnon et moi envisageons de partir au Nouveau Mexique en
Avril prochain pour 2 semaines.
Nous avons déjà réservé nos billets d'avions et atterrirons à Los Angeles où
nous louerons un véhicule car nous souhaitons d'abord visiter San Diego.
Nous avons regardé le forum et souhaiterions que des personnes ayant
déjà visité cet état nous communiquent les meilleures étapes à effectuer
compte tenu de la petite durée de notre séjour.
De plus nous ne sommes pas du tout camping mais plutôt hôtel bon marché.

ce qui m'inquiète surtout ( si l'on peut dire ! ) ce n'est pas tant "arriver à LA pour visiter le NM" , c'est le projet de descendre à San Diego pour visiter la ville ...
C'est aller complètement à contre courant !
Sûr que ce n'est pas le Mexique ?
Pourquoi dis-tu que c'est aller à contre-courant de faire Los Angeles > San Diego avant de prendre la direction du Nouveau-Mexique ? Nous aussi, on va dans ce sens puisque notre circuit commence sur la côte.
Cela dit, on dispose de davantage de jours et nous n'avons pas l'intention de visiter uniquement le Nouveau-Mexique.
Après leur visite de San Diego, Dibiou et son compagnon peuvent se diriger vers le sud de l'Arizona, puis ils vont au Nouveau-Mexique.
Nous pensions en effet passer par l'Arizona pour redescendre au NM. Nous adorons rouler donc les distances ne nous font pas peur. Ce que je craignais le plus en venant sur ce site ce sont parfois les remarques qui me font penser que tout doit être prévu, réfléchi et figé.
Je vais aller regarder les blogs des 2 réponses que j'ai eues et m'en inspirer.
Voilà : en tout cas, si San Diego ne les éloigne pas trop de leur but ( NM ) , on ne peut certes pas dire qu'il les en rapproche ! Compte + ou - 1400 kms ( 880 miles) entre S D et Santa Fé par ex .
J'ai fait ces états aussi : comme tu le sais , çà fait très longtemps mais les distances n'ont pas changé !
Nous avions atterri à Albuquerque, de là vers le Nouveau Mexique en long et en large, puis une longue journée ( on aurait pu visiter, mais le temps ...) vers Tucson où, de nouveau , nous avons passé une semaine de balades, et , de là, Phoenix et un vol intérieur pour San Diego : 4-5 jours : en tout , un peu plus de 3 semaines : rien de trop ...
Du coup, le parcours prévu , A R de Los Angeles , ne me semble pas optimal ... et pour tout dire , difficile en 2 semaines !

Oui, en 2 semaines, je ne sais pas comment Marcelle va s 'organiser. En lisant le 1er message, je n'avais pas compris que le retour se faisait à Los Angeles.
En fonction de leur programme, peut-être que Marcelle et son compagnon seront obligés de prendre un vol intérieur pour rejoindre Los Angeles.
Je pars également avec ma famille pour un road trip incluant le Nouveau Mexique ( entre autres) en avril , en atterrissant à Los Angeles . evidemment je suis consciente que ce n'est pas l'aéroport le plus proche mais les vols pour Phoenix par exemple étaient bien plus chers . j'ai réussi à trouver un très bon prix pour LA .
J'ai construit un périple en 2 semaines qui me semble cohérent même si nous roulerons pas mal mais nous sommes habitués ( c'est le 5e voyage aux US ! nous avons le virus ) .
Par contre , c'est un avis personnel mais j'ai visité San Diego en 2013 et je n'ai rien trouvé d'exceptionnel ....à part le zoo ...

Nous sommes en train de revoir notre copie pour changer
peut être de parcours.
Pour nous c'est aussi le cinquième voyage aux USA mais
première fois seuls. Jusqu'à présent nous avions fait
un voyage en autotour mais préparé par une agence et
3 circuits accompagnés.
On se lance avec mon anglais approximatif mais notre
amour inconditionnel des states.
Nous pensons soit partir de Los Angeles à Phoenix puis
visiter le plus de sites possibles au NM en se levant très tôt
(ce qui est déjà le cas quand on est en circuit) soit
visiter les lieux que nous n'avons pas fait en Californie
et Arizona.
De toutes façons nous ne comptions réserver que le premier
hôtel pour accuser la fatigue du voyage et voir au fur et à
mesure.
Nous n'avons que le billet d'avion de figé (non remboursable)
et pensions réserver un véhicule de location d'ici fin décembre
donc on continu à regarder pour voir quelle option choisir.
Quoi qu'il en soit si on ne fait pas le NM en 2016 se sera pour 2017

Nous avons fait un circuit Arizona/Nouveau Mexique au printemps 2013 (en mai). La période est agréable et tu auras sûrement plus de fleurs que nous dans le désert de Sonora.
Si tu veux regarder mon carnet, tu auras quelques idées d'endroit sympa pour loger.
J'ai bien noté que ton billet est non remboursable, mais parfois on peut modifier les billets et le coût n'est pas forcément si élevé que ça.
Parce que 2 semaines, ça me paraît un peu juste.

J'ai fais le Nouveau Mexique en deux semaines . Je suis actuellement en balade entre Los Angeles et San Diego , je ne me verrais pas faire ton circuit . La circulation autour de Los Angeles est infernale. en plus .
Le vol est trop important dans un voyage pour ne regarder que le prix.

Puisque vous êtes ouvert, et moi aussi, à des conseils, voici ce que je ferais cette année pour ne pas déménager les vols !
Bien sur, c'est VOTRE voyage et c'est vous qui décidez ; ce n'est qu'une idée parmi d'autres .
Arrivée LA donc , puis vous aimeriez descendre à San Diego : ce n'est pas ( du tout ) une ville désagréable et moins 'speed' et diluée que LA ; nous y avions dormi dans le quartier espagnol . Il y a le zoo auquel on peut consacrer 1 jour mais aussi le Balboa Park avec des musées pour tous les goûts : depuis l'art, les sciences, les amérindiens , ..., le tout bien mis en valeur, sans oublier le bord de mer .
Je ferais, de là, le Sud de l'Arizona en boucle, par Tucson et tous les parcs aux alentours : Sonora desert, ... , puis les environs : Tombstone , ...
Enfin, retour vers la côte et je garderais le NM pour l'année d'après, en commençant le périple par un vol vers Albuquerque .
Vous pouvez toujours regarder une carte et décider ...
Pour ce qui est de votre anglais , le mien est scolaire : on me comprend et je comprends les réponses , c'est l'essentiel !

Arrivee a Los Angeles, depart depuis la meme ville?
En deux semaines vous avez le temps de faire un beau circuit.
Depuis San Diego vous pouvez aller jusqu’a Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. C’est un des Parks ou l’on peut voir ce type de cacti. Cette annee, le 14 Avril les cacti commencaient a fleurir.
Pres de Tucson AZ vous avez deux Parks Saguaro West et Saguaro East. Ils ont beaucoup en commun mais ils valent chacun la visite. Dans ces deux Parks aussi les cacti commencaient a fleurir vers les memes dates.
Saguaro
Au Sud du New Mexico vous avez a Alamogordo le White Sands Dunes Park et un peu plus a l’Est Carlsbad Caverns que je vous recommande. Vous avez plusieurs autres Parks, tous meritent une visite si vous avez le temps.
En remontant vers le Nord vous avez Albuquerque et Santa Fe petite ville que j’aime beaucoup.
Au retour vers LA vous avez Petrified Forest et le Grand Canyon.
Tous ces endroits seront facilement accessibles.

et arriverons sur Phoenix d'où nous repartirons également (les tarifs
pour Albuquerque étant trop élevés) .
Les distances seront donc beaucoup plus "raisonnables.

Je sais que beaucoup hésitent à modifier un billet : les détails du coût ne sont pas très explicites sur les documents et on s'imagine toujours que ça va coûter un max.
En tous cas, le circuit va être plus facile.

J'ai réglé 360 € (soit 180 € par personne) de frais de modification et 187 € de différence de tarif (Los Angeles étant moins cher que Phoenix). J'avais réservé mes billets sur American Airlines.
Je ne savais pas que les billets non remboursables étaient modifiables. Alors j'ai tenté le coup.
De toutes façons, avec tous les conseils que l'on m'a donnés, la différence sera vite rentabilisée.
Je crois que ces euros vaudront leur pesant d'or en bout de ligne. En faisant la boucle à partir de Phoenix, vous venez de gagner bcp de km et surtout de précieux temps.
J'admire le fait que vous n'avez pas d'itinéraire, je n'apprécie par particulièrement avoir un itinéraire "day to day", mais plus un aperçu des trucs à faire et on verra sur place.
Nous partons dans 2 jours pour 3 semaines et vu le temps de l'année, on a réservé à l'avance et ça m'énerve déjà car j'ai changé d'idée 2 fois sur la durée que je veux passer à chaque endroit...

After that, we’re heading to Sherbrooke to visit our daughter, who’s studying at the university there. We’ll spend 3 days with her, and then, since she has a break that week, we’re taking her along for 3 days in Quebec City.
We’ve planned to visit Montmorency Falls and Île d'Orléans.
I’d love to hear what route you’d recommend for the drive from Sherbrooke to Quebec City—we’ll have the whole day to take it easy.

A friend is renting a car for an upcoming trip during the All Saints' holiday.
Nowadays, all rental cars come with GPS, but do you know if you can use it without paying for the GPS rental? I have no idea since I always use my own!
After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏

We went as a family to Mount Rushmore in 2023, where my son bought a multi-function pocket knife like the one below with his name engraved—'NOAH'.
Unfortunately, he just lost it, and he was really attached to it. So, if there’s a kind soul passing by Mount Rushmore who could bring one back for me (I’d obviously cover all costs), that would be amazing for my son.

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’ve read there are trails to access the trailheads for Cinder Cone (11 km) and Warner Valley. Are these easy trails for an SUV?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.
Thanks for advising me on the booking—should I reserve a room in the hotel or go for a cabin for the best view?

I’m planning a week-long family trip to NYC in October 2026. The focus is on museums and soaking up the New York vibe. I’ve been checking Airbnb, but the prices in Manhattan are through the roof. Since I don’t know NYC well, is it "wise" to look outside Manhattan? Any neighborhoods you’d recommend?
After our first trip to the West, we’d love to go back to see other must-see spots!

Just a little post that might interest some of you:

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!
