Hi,

I’m planning a trip to Indonesia, specifically Sulawesi and Java, in September for 10 days. I don’t know this part of the world at all—any advice is welcome! I’ll be traveling solo and would also love tips on meeting other travelers or locals.

Thanks

Hi there, Even for a first taste, trying to visit two islands in 10 days is pretty unrealistic. Since transportation is much simpler on Java, you’d be better off focusing your trip there.

But here’s a quick itinerary idea for both islands—really just two short hops: Arrive in Yogyakarta from ? by bus, train, or plane, spend 4 nights exploring the city and its surroundings. Midday flight from Yogyakarta to Makassar on Lion Air, then an overnight bus to Rantepao. Explore the Rantepao area + a guided trek through Toraja land, about 4 nights total. Overnight bus from Rantepao back to Makassar, then a connecting flight to ? You could also do this in reverse. With so little time for two islands, don’t even think about adding a third main stop.

Meeting other travelers: at your guesthouse, in tourist-friendly restaurants/bistros, while waiting for the Makassar-Rantepao bus (or the other way around), in airport departure lounges, or at tourist sites...

Meeting locals: anywhere you can support them directly or indirectly, plus in Toraja land where your guide can help with translation.

Right now, Judau is sharing their experience in Rantepao (among other places) here: https://voyageforum.com/forum/petit-bout-sulawesi-en-famille-rantepao-selayar-d11481138/

Thanks for your reply, Songsam, I have an obligation near Luwuk in Sulawesi, so I’ll start there. I was thinking of visiting Java—or at least Jakarta—on my way back, but from what you’re saying, I’d be better off staying in Sulawesi for the whole trip and making the most of it?

I have an obligation in Sulawesi

Which area?

but from what you're telling me, should I just stay in Sulawesi for the whole trip and make the most of it?

I don’t know Sulawesi, but I do know that transportation there is slow, infrequent, and sometimes tough, so I’m wondering if 10 days might be either too much or too little. For this question, it’s best to wait for input from other travelers.

I’ll be in Batui, about 50 km from Luwuk

Geographically, you're not making things easy for yourself since it's a bit out of the way (except for the Banggai Islands), but at least Luwuk has an airport—that’s already something... which in September is served twice daily to/from Makassar by Batik Air. Manado 4 times a week and Palu 2 times a week in each direction with Wings Air. You could, for example, consider flights from Jakarta to Luwuk via Makassar possibly in the same day, stay, then take a flight from Luwuk to Makassar and from there: - either Rantepao as already mentioned above, then a flight from Makassar to Jakarta. - or a flight from Makassar to Yogyakarta*, a few nights' visit, then a train**, bus**, or flight to Jakarta.

To reach other cities in Sulawesi by road from Luwuk, expect many hours of travel.

*Flights from Luwuk to Yogyakarta via Makassar can be done the same day **Day or night trips.

Thanks for these recommendations! I wasn’t expecting Luwuk to be so remote! I’ll check out the Banggai Islands, but I’ll probably head back to Makassar as soon as I can.

Hi there, For a 10-day trip, either you go to Sulawesi or you stay on Java, but I’d advise against doing both. Even if you fly to Luwuk, there’s a risk of getting stuck and missing your return flight. Flight cancellations are common in Indonesia, and by road, it’s 3 or 4 days of bus just to get back to Makassar. If anything, you could do East Java and a side trip to Bali, Nusa Lembongan, or Penida. Another option: fly from Jakarta to Makassar, then take a bus to Rantepao (Toraja country for 2 or 3 nights), return to Makassar, and if you have time left, take a bus to Bira and its beautiful beaches... Then back to Makassar/Jakarta.

Even flying to Luwuk is risky—you could get stuck and miss your return flight. Flight cancellations are common in Indonesia.

For the domestic flight before your return from Jakarta to xx, you’ll be flying either from Makassar—which has plenty of backup air options (no fewer than 7 airlines with 25–30 daily flights from Makassar to Jakarta CGK)—or from Yogyakarta, where both road and air alternatives are also abundant.

There are 2 daily flights between Luwuk and Makassar. When it comes to air service in remote areas, it could be way worse. If your flight gets canceled, you won’t be stranded for days. For Makassar-Luwuk, same as above, plus you’ll be at the start of your trip (if I understood correctly), so if there’s a one-day delay, you can adjust the rest of your itinerary—even with 10 days—if you stick to 2 main stops as suggested.

For Luwuk-Yogyakarta via Makassar, the last flight from Luwuk arrives in Makassar at 4:15 PM, then there are 2 flights around 6 PM to Yogyakarta YIA (Lion Air and Sriwijaya Air). Fewer backup options, but it’s not hopeless.

One thing to know about Indonesia: if you’re struggling to find a last-minute seat on a flight in smaller cities, a little *bakshish* can work wonders. Head straight to the airline’s office in town or at the airport. If they tell you, “No, no, no, sir, the flight is full,” just place a small bill equivalent to around twenty euros in rupiahs on the counter with a hopeful look. Suddenly, the agent might “find” a seat that “opened up in the meantime”... I’ve tried this twice—both times in Ende and Bima—and it worked. In both cases, the plane was far from full...
