Hi there, We’re planning to travel from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang next November. We’d like to take a slow boat from Chiang Khong—or rather from Huay Xai in Laos—with an overnight stop in Pakbeng. Could you let us know if the boat still leaves Huay Xai in the late morning? If so, what time roughly, and what’s the price for the trip? Thanks for your help! Alod

Hi there, Departure times vary roughly between 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM depending on the time of year (water levels, daylight hours...) and probably other factors that we non-Laotians would struggle to understand. So, you're not much further ahead, and even someone who did the trip in November 2025 wouldn’t guarantee that the schedules will be the same in November 2026.

Thanks for your reply, If I understand correctly, you made this trip in November 2025? If that’s the case, could you let me know the cost of the trip to Luang Prabang?

Hi there, The boats leave around 8:30-9:00 AM from the Houexey pier and arrive around 3-4 PM in Pakbeng (with many stops in villages along the way). The number of boats depends on how many travelers are present—tourists and lots of locals heading to villages along the Mekong, most of which can only be reached by boat.

What I don’t know is the water level of the Mekong in November. In September, we had no issues (just a few minor scrapes here and there).

Tickets are bought on-site at the counter, and they’ll tell you which boat to take.

To spend the night in Pakbeng, you can choose your homestay upon arrival. There are several along the street leading up from the pier, but often they’re offered to you on the boat—obviously with a commission, but given the price of the night, it won’t make much of a difference! The boat fare is around 150,000 LAK (about 15 €) per day. You’ll need to buy another ticket in Pakbeng for the second day.
