Even though I come to Morocco four times a year, it’s been a long time since I’ve made the trip by car. I need to refresh my knowledge! I’ll be traveling in early October. I have a car that’s about 20 years old. The plan is to cross via Algeciras/Ceuta.

A few questions:

1) Does this crossing still exist? If so, do I need to buy the ticket in advance or on the spot? From whom? Any advice is welcome!

2) What documents are required for the car?

3) If anyone is making the trip around the same time, it could be fun to drive together 😊

I’m planning a road trip to Morocco in about a month. I’ve read quite a few discussions, posts, comments, and travel journals that have helped me prepare, but I still need your valuable input. The north seems easier to plan. It’s the south that’s got me wondering.

The plan: - 20 days in the south solo, going off the beaten path (looking for simplicity, encounters, discovery, and breathtaking views) - 10 days in the north with my wife and her 8-year-old daughter (so more coastal, some sightseeing—more "classic") When: August (I know it’s not the best time, but no choice) Duration: 20 days in the south + 10 days in the north (might seem short) Distance: 3,000 km in the south over 20 days. Rental vehicle to be decided (4x4?) (I’ve done a Portugal road trip from Lille—5,000 km in 3 weeks—and Italy several times, usually around 4,000–5,000 km in 3 weeks).

Route (I need to plot this on a map like Maps.me or Google...): Start in Marrakech -> Tinmelt -> Icht -> M’hamid El Ghizlane -> Agdz -> Khamlia -> Errachidia -> Tinghir -> Imilchil -> Boulmane Dadès -> Ouarzazate -> Telouet -> Demnate -> Arousse -> Ahansal Gorges -> Tilouguite -> Bin El Ouidane -> Oued El Abid Gorges -> Ouzoud Waterfalls -> Marrakech

On paper, this all seems "doable"... I’ve never been to Morocco before. It’s my first time. I’ve heard that Morocco is best experienced "slowly and peacefully," taking your time. I’d love to hear your thoughts on these points—that’s the whole point!

I’ve got a few questions and could really use your help with your on-the-ground knowledge and experiences: Is this really doable? Are the roads on this route passable? Any tips? Thanks so much for your help and for any time you can spare.

Two adults and two kids—we’re thinking about a 7-day trip to Morocco in mid-February. Our flights would arrive in Marrakech at 3 PM on February 13th and depart at 7 AM on the 20th. We’ve based our itinerary on travel blogs, but we’re not experts, so we’d love your advice.

February 13th: Arrival in Marrakech at 3 PM. Settle in and explore the city. Night in Marrakech.

February 14th: Full day and evening in Marrakech.

February 15th: Drive via Teoulet to Aït Ben Haddou (~3.5 hours), visit the site. In the mid-afternoon, drive (~45 minutes) to Ouarzazate. Spend the rest of the day and night in Ouarzazate.

February 16th: Morning in Ouarzazate, then drive (~3 hours) to Foum Zguid. Night in Foum Zguid.

February 17th: Early departure (~2-hour drive) from Foum Zguid to Erg Chegaga with a guide. Desert experience and bivouac. Night in Erg Chegaga.

February 18th: Sunrise at Erg Chegaga, return to Foum Zguid where the car will be parked. Drive to an intermediate stop. We’re not sure what to do at this point—any recommendations? Is there a better option than heading back to Ouarzazate? Night at this intermediate stop.

February 19th: Return to Marrakech, sightseeing, and night near Marrakech airport.

February 20th: Early transfer for a 7 AM flight.

Questions:

Do these travel times seem realistic? Any suggestions for a smoother trip or interesting stops without adding days? Is Foum Zguid a good choice for visiting the desert? What temperatures should we expect in the desert, especially at night? We’d really appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

circuit: Tanger - Chefchaouen - Fes - Midelt - merzouga - skoura - Ait Ben Haddou - Marrakech - Agadir - Essaouira

Besoin de plusieurs suggestions dans ces villes ou environs:

1- Quelle coopérative d'huile d'Argan visiter? Il semble y en avoir plusieurs et je ne sais pas sur quel critère choisir.

2- Où voir des mouflons exactement? Mon garçon a une fixation sur les mouflons

3- Un hammam que vous avez essayé et que vous recommander avec des enfants?

4- Que recommanderiez vous pour une soirée mémorable à Marrakech? Nous y serons le 24 et 25 décembre, ils ne fêtent pas Noel... mais nous oui! Donc nous cherchons une activité mémorable/insolite/typique/etc pour souligner. Ça pourrait tout aussi bien être un resto qui sort vraiment de l'ordinaire.

5- Le réel temps de route entre les cascades d'Ouzoud et Marrakech! Parfois je lis 1h30 aller, d'autre fois je lis 3 heures!

6- Un endroit pour voir des fossiles de dinosaures (musée)? Encore une fois, pour mon garçon!

Je vais me rendre au Maroc fin mars via l'Espagne. J'y reste jusqu'au 24 avril ou plus longtemps si le ramadan ne me complique pas trop le séjour. Apparemment il n'est pas nécessaire de réserver le bateau Algésiras-Tanger. Je pense dormir tantôt dans ma voiture (petit utilitaire Partner), tantôt dans des auberges pas trop chères. J'aimerais ne réserver aucune nuit pour conserver toute liberté.

Le guide "campings du Maroc" (Gaudini-Samson-Verhooste) est-il bien ? Puis-je espérer trouver des hébergements assez bon marché sans réserver à l'avance ? (par curiosité je suis allée sur Booking.com et çà ne m'a pas rassurée)

Just so you know, I’m planning to do this trip solo (25 years old), using only public transport and just a backpack. I’ve already been to Marrakech and climbed Mount Toubkal two years ago...

I’ll be arriving in Tangier. Day 1-2: Explore the city center, hike around Cap Spartel... Day 3: Stop in Tetouan Day 4-5-6: Chefchaouen and a day hike in the Rif Mountains Day 6-7: Discover the city of Fes (I’ve heard so many great things!!) Day 8: Stop in Meknes and possibly visit the historic site of Volubilis Day 9-10: Rabat (I’ve heard mixed things... some good, some bad) After that, I have the choice of heading back to Tangier for my return flight... or going down to Agadir (also a possible return flight) and extending my trip by 5 days :)

From what I can tell, everything is well connected by bus (CTM) or train (ONCF). Another question: Is the vibe in Moroccan youth hostels for meeting people the same as what you’d find in Western Europe?

I aimed for an excursion to the Chigaga desert from M’Hamid because it seems less touristy and allows for a more compact loop. Is that a good idea? Is the drive to M’Hamid maybe too tedious?

A lot of people find it important to stick to their budget when traveling—not to skimp, but to visit as many places as possible since traveling is their hobby.

In this post, I want to share some tips for those coming to Morocco who want their trip to be budget-friendly.

1. Prebook everything: hotels or riads, car rentals, or tours. If you book these in advance, it’ll make your life easier. You won’t have to deal with hagglers or people trying to overcharge you for services that are available online for free. Use platforms like Booking, Expedia, carsrental.ma, Airbnb, and other booking services to get this done properly.

2. Exchange your money to Moroccan dirhams as soon as you land. 1 € is always a little over 10 dirhams, but many people get charged as if it were exactly 10 dirhams per euro.

3. When visiting an old site or the old medina, avoid talking to vendors and shop owners—they’re really good at getting your attention and making you overpay for things.

4. Ask your tour guide to buy things for you. Yes, they do get a commission, but you’ll probably pay way more if you buy something yourself that they can get cheaply.

5. Walk everywhere. You don’t need a taxi for every little trip. Pick a good location and walk—most Moroccan cities are safe during normal hours.

6. Buy your food, drinks, etc., from supermarkets at normal prices. They can’t overcharge you since they scan every product.

Hi everyone, I’m traveling with my teenage daughter at the end of February with plans to do the Marrakech/Merzouga loop by car. We arrive Friday evening (7:45 PM) in Marrakech, and I’d love to head south first thing Saturday morning.

Would you have any ideas for accommodation with breakfast included that could help me avoid the center of Marrakech and let me quickly get back on the road? I checked Booking but didn’t find many options... Do you think it’s better to pick up the car right at the airport in the evening or have it delivered to the hotel the next day? Hi there, in mid-January my wife and I are leaving from Marrakech heading to the Atlas (Essaouira ==> Dades ==> Merzouga ==> Draa Valley) before finally making our way to Taghazout near Agadir for 2 or 3 days.

I’m hesitating about renting a car, and since I don’t know the road conditions, I’d like to know if a Dacia Sandero is enough for this kind of trip?

Another thing making me hesitate is the possibility of rain and roads being less passable.

Hi everyone, I know there are some *reaaaal* Morocco experts here, so I’m giving it a shot. Early June, we’re heading back to the country for the third time for a little week-long trip. We’ll arrive and depart from Essaouira, where we’ll rent a car to drive south down to roughly Sidi Ifni. The plan is to make short stops of 2-3 hours max, a mix of coastal spots and a bit inland. We’re looking for natural, quiet places that feel untouched. We loved Taghazout years ago and Larache two years back—just to give you an idea of our vibe. What spots would you recommend along this route? I’m tempted by Paradise Valley but worried it’ll be as crowded as Agadir. What do you think? Any other valleys in the area worth the detour? Nous devions séjourner à Marrakech mais lors de la prise de nos billets d'avion la tarification était beaucoup plus avantageuse pour une arrivée à Agadir. Nous sommes un peu perdus, nous devons recommencer nos recherches et faire nos réservations pour l'hôtel, les paysages ont l'air différents, sûrement très jolis mais d'après les forums il semblerait que ce ne soit pas la meilleur destination que nous avons choisi, peut être à tord pour certaines personnes, la période semble correcte, c'est pourquoi, il est bon de se faire ses propres opinions . Quels sont vos conseils pour les visites, les hébergements (tarifs 35/40 par nuit €, est-ce suffisant ?) combien de jours est nécessaire pour visiter Agadir, que faire aux alentours, devons nous nous contenter de rester au plus près pour profiter, ou louer une voiture. Est-il possible de passer au moins 1 nuit dans le désert car les distances ont l'air difficile à calculer ce que nous avions vu au départ de Marrakech (Telouet/Ait Ben Addou/Skoura/gorges du Dades/Erfoud/Merzouga route retour par N'Kob ect… Faut-il prévoir de faire environ 3 h de route par jour avec nuits sur place, quel serait votre road trip au départ de Agadir …. Nous venons de retenir l'avion pour partir cet été au Maroc en famille (2 adultes et 2 ados) (arrivée Marrakech et départ Agadir). Je suis en train d'essayer de faire un planning sur 3 semaines. Oui je sais, le sud marocain est très chaud en été, mais nous sommes habitués de voyager sous la chaleur l'été. Je ne connais pas la région. Que me conseillez vous à voir et à faire sachant que nous louerons une voiture à Marrakech?

J'ai quelques questions : - Combien de jours à Skoura?

- Est ce que pour visiter la vallée du Dades, il est bien de dormir à Bou Thara? Combien de jours?

- Est ce que la route entre Tinghir et M'Hamid (pour voir le désert) est "roulable" et pas trop difficile? Il s'agit de 330kms, est ce faisable en 1 journée?

- Mêmes questions entre M'Hamid et Tata (voir Tafraoute mais je pense route trop longue)? Que voir ver Tata?

- des hébergements à me conseiller?

Toute nouvelle sur ce forum, je sollicite déjà vos bons conseils de voyageurs expérimentés!!

Alors voilà... Je pars au Maroc avec mon conjoint, du 21 mars au 11 avril.

Nous avons pour première intention de passer 10 jours dans le désert (certainement de MERZOUGA), pour une mission WORKAWAY.

Pour la suite de notre séjour, c'est un peu plus flou. En effet, nous aurions initialement voulu découvrir le massif de l'Atlas, en "trek" organisé. Seulement, le climat à cette saison ne semble pas des plus opportuns pour découvrir cette région du MAROC. Confirmez-vous?

il nous faut donc à priori un plan B... Nous adorons la montagne, les grands espaces, les endroits peu fréquentés par des hordes de personnes (nous hésitons même à visiter Marrakech, par peur d'être déçus du côté trop touristique....), partager nos différences de culture... Nous ne sommes pas fermés à découvrir une région maritime mais je ne sais pas si avril est une bonne saison pour cela. Les sites que j'ai consulté ne sont pas unanimes sur la question!

Avez-vous donc des idées à nous soumettre pour la seconde partie de notre séjour, compte tenu de mon descriptif? Nous ne pensons pas louer de véhicule, plutôt utiliser le réseau de bus qui semble assez bien développé. la question du temps de trajet entre chaque destination est donc à considérer, bien sur... nous pensons peut-être à 2 "points de chute" pour les 9/10 jours restants.
