I’m planning and organizing a wonderful trip to Vietnam from mid-March to mid-April 2026, traveling independently for a month with my wife to enjoy her new retirement. Here’s a summary of our itinerary: We arrive in Ho Chi Minh City on the morning of Wednesday, March 18, and depart from Hanoi on the evening of Thursday, April 16. First, I’d like to head to Ho Chi Minh City because the temperatures are high in that region in mid-March. After that, we’ll visit Phu Quoc Island and then the Mekong Delta. We’ll return to Ho Chi Minh City and take a flight to Hue for 2 days, then Tam Coc / Ninh Binh (2-3 days), and Cat Ba Island with a visit to Lan Ha Bay (4 days). We’ll spend a few days in Hanoi, followed by 3-4 days in Sapa with some hikes, and then the Ha Giang loop (4 days). (I’m a motorcyclist—I ride a BMW trail bike and have taken care of renewing my international license.) We’re considering renting a motorcycle or bicycles when needed, except in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The weather in northern Vietnam in early April should theoretically be decent. Finally, we’ll return to Hanoi before heading back to Paris and the Pays de la Loire. Unfortunately, I’m skipping Angkor in Cambodia. I’d like to have a guide for 1 or 2 days in Sapa (which typical agency would you recommend?), and I’m wondering if I should book an agency for the 4 days in Ha Giang. I prefer my independence and don’t really like the "group" aspect of agencies. I’ll rent a 150cc motorcycle, and my wife will ride with me. Other questions: What are some good, typical accommodations to book in the places we’ve identified? Thanks for any info. Did I forget anything, or should we adjust our itinerary? So, my flight tickets have just been booked for a trip to Cambodia from November 4th to 27th, 2025. I’ll be traveling solo and want to explore this amazing country while getting a bit off the beaten path. I’m arriving in Phnom Penh and also departing from Phnom Penh. My goal is to travel as much as possible by bus and scooter. What itinerary would you recommend? What are the must-do things? I’m open to all tips and info. Puis prendre le bateau jusqu'à Battambang : 8 h de bateau Battambang: 2 nuits , visite de la ville. Puis bus jusquà Kep ou alors faire une escale dans une ville entre Batttambang et PP ? A kep : louer une vespa et se ballader , Puis Kampot: louer une vespa, visiter une ferme de poivre Aller sur une ile? retour sur PP voilà plus ou moins notre périple . Le nombre de nuits n'est pas fixe. Pensez vous que c'est jouable en 18jours ou bien est ce trop fatiguant? Avez vous d'autres propositions? En arrivant à PP quel est le transport le plus adapté pour se rendre en ville? J'ai lu que le train était gratuit. Merci par avance pour vos conseils.

Nous allons passer 8 jours à 2 au Cambodge en mars 2020 Notre mini tour ci-dessous est il plausible et ou dormir à Kompong Chhnang Arrivée Phnom Pen + 2 jours de visite Bus Phnom Pen / Kompong Chhnang (via ligne bus PP / Battambang et arrêt à Kompong Chhnang) Visite de Kompong Chhnang et nuit sur place mais mis à part 2 ou 3 hotels booking je ne trouve pas grand chose comme hébergement (avez vous des idées ou conseils) Re départ en bus le lendemain matin pour Battambang (2 jours de visites) Bus Battambang / Siem Rep 2 jours Siem Rep et 3 jours Angkor Retour avion Bangkok

Ou alors, faut il faire Kompong chhnang direct aller et retour depuis Phnom Pen dans la journée et ensuite faire bus direct Phnom Pen Battambang ?

Bonjour à tous, Nous revenons d'un périple de 3 semaines en juillet aout avec 2 semaines sur le Nord Vietnam (Hanoï, les montagnes du NO vers Ha Giang à deux pas de la frontière chinoise puis les deux baies d'Halong (terrestre et maritime), le delta du fleuve rouge (à faire; pas de touristes rencontrés), Hué, Hoï An et vol pour le Cambodge de Da Nang pour SiemReap pour les temples d'Angkor puis le lac Tonlé Sap au centre du pays et enfin Pnohm Penh pour le retour France, Nice avec Emirates via Dubaï. Nous avons été trés loins de notre "zone de confort" parfois lorsque chez l'habitant et souvent éloignés des zones touristiques que ce soit pour loger ou pour manger. Nous avons évités toutes ces agences sur Hanoï qui vous proposent les mêmes choses en 1/2 ou 3 jours. Je vous recommande notre guide francophone si cela vous intéresse. Il est indépendant et en plus est féru de botanique et se déplace sur l'ensemble du Vietnam. Une belle rencontre.

Pour le Cambodge, restez sur Siem Reap et les temples d'Angkor, le reste peut être évité.

Alright, I’m scaling back the kilometers thanks to the relevance and patience of our Cambodia experts! Here’s yet another hesitation /\ When I arrive early on 01/12 in PP, I have the choice between spending a day in PP (booking a convenience room for half a day and leaving by night bus), sleeping in PP and taking the bus to SR the next morning, or hiring a driver to head back up to PP with a nice little stop and maybe sleeping in Kampong Thom or Kampong Chhnang, then heading to SP on the 13th. Then from the 13th to the 17th or 18th, exploring Angkor. I continue to Kampong Thom and stay for 2 nights (if I didn’t do it on the way there), but I might be templed-out by then. I head to Kampong Cham, where I’ll spend 2 nights—one on the island and one on the mainland. Next, I go to Kampot and Kep: probably 2 nights in Kampot, 2 in Kep, and 1 night on Tonsay Island. On 01/28, I return to PP until 01/29. One detail: how long does it take to get from downtown PP to the new airport? Because I leave on 01/29 around 7:50 PM... Anyway, I’m ready to read your unfiltered reactions 🤓 and thank you in advance for your help!

Bonjour, Nous sommes un couple avec nos 2 filles de 12 et 15 ans et nous serons au vietnam du 14/02 au 01/03. Quelqu'un peut il me conseiller sur l itinéraire en arrivant par Hanoï , sachant que nous voulons faire du Nord au sud avec en incontournable Baie de lan ha ( halong) et la baie terrestre d Halong, au centre Hoi an puis au sud le Delta du Mekong. Enfin nous souhaitons terminer par au moins 3 ou 4 jours de Balnéaire. En février, il fait froid donc certaines agences me conseillent quand meme le nord et d autres non ? Une alternative proposer et Mai Chau à priori ou rester un peu plus dans la campagne de Hoï an dans le centre . Je suis un peu perdue. Merci pour vos conseils.

De retour du Laos avec un vol sur Saïgon il me restera 3 ,4 ou 5 jours pour faire un tour dans le delta du Mékong . ( Aller retour sur Saïgon ) J'aimerais m'arrêter dans les lieux que vous pensez intéressants et parcourir, de- ci , de-là quand c'est possible, la campagne à vélo, loger si possible chez l'habitant ( "maison d'hôtes" homestays.) voir des marchés etc......Si vous avez un itinéraire à me suggérer des lieux à ne pas manquer et des adresses de homestays j'attends vos conseils. PS: J'utiliserai les transports en commun, bus et taxis...

Hello everyone, We’re heading to Vietnam for 14 nights over the Christmas holidays as a family of four—I haven’t booked anything yet. I’d love your insights on Halong Bay (or Lan Ha Bay). We’re torn between going or not and spending an extra night in Ninh Binh (or somewhere else you’d recommend! Somewhere with a more picturesque vibe) given the late-December weather and cost (which agency do you recommend?). The upside might be that we’ll be there during the low season, so maybe fewer tourists? (Even though it’d be New Year’s Eve night.) Bonjour, Nous partons à Da nang le 4 février à 2 pour 30 jours de visites, découvertes, ballades et repos tranquillou ! Nous avons de ne faire que le centre de façon à réserver le nord pour une autre saison et le sud pour une autre année (donc on ne descendrait pas jusqu' Dalat) ! Nous avons épluché le routard et le lonely et parcouru le forum qui regorge d'informations passionnantes ........et c'est le pb car nous ne savons plus comment orienter notre séjour. Aussi je pose les questions en vrac . 1/ ce qui est fixé : arrivé à Danang et direct à Hoi An = 7 jours pour rayonner puis Hué = 4 ou 5 jours ?? (nous aimons prendre notre temps) 2/ Ensuite reste donc 17 ou 18 jours pour faire Kontum, Buon Ma Thuot et remonter vers Da nang en faisant une ou 2 escales sur des plages : Doc let ? Qui Nhon (bai Xep ?)

Que pensez vous de la faisabilité en fonction des temps de transport ? Quelles sont les durées de transports ? N'est-ce pas "redondant" de faire une étape à Kontum et à BMT sachant que nous n'aimons pas faire des escales de moins de 2 jours ? Est-ce possible d'aller en louant une moto visiter seul les villages à la journée ? et les campagnes environnantes ?

Pour la remontée et escale plage (avant retour dans froid et grisaille parisienne) vos avis ?

Hi everyone, I’ve got a big project in northern Vietnam—discovering the most beautiful rice terraces before the harvest... I’m planning to leave around September 15th until October 15th, then spend 15 days exploring the two bays, Lan Ha and Ha Long. In total, 45 days without a visa... I’m traveling solo and very independent. But is it possible to do this kind of trip using local trains and buses? My plan is to leave Hanoi for Nghia Lo (2 days), then Mu Cang Chai (4 days), Sapa (4 days), Bac Ha (2 days), Ha Giang... Hoang Su Phi, then do the Meo Vac loop, Dong Van, etc., to see those stunning karst peaks before heading back to Hanoi. In my research, I haven’t found any buses or vans going from Hanoi to Nghia Lo, even though it’s super popular for its rice terrace landscapes.... I don’t want a daily driver, but I’m thinking I could use moto-taxis to get around locally once I’m there.... What do you think? These rice terraces are a dream for me, along with the markets and all the different ethnic groups, not to mention those spectacular rocky peaks... Is the itinerary too ambitious? I’ve got time on my side. Do you have any solutions? I’ve browsed the forum a lot, but the discussions are 5 or 6 years old, and I think things have changed since then. Hi everyone, we arrive in Hanoi from March 6th to 8th, then head to Ninh Binh from the 8th to 10th. I’d planned to sleep in Halong on the 10th because on the 11th we’re doing an overnight cruise with the Peony. On the 12th, we’re staying in Cat Ba—I’m not sure if we should stay the 13th too? Back to Hanoi to go to Ho Chi Minh City airport for two nights, I think. Then the Mekong Delta, Ben Tre. We’ve booked two nights in Phu Coc to leave on March 19th for Hanoi and fly back to France on the 20th. Nothing’s set in stone yet, but I could really use your help—is going to Cat Ba necessary? We love the nature side, and Ben Tre seems essential. Is going to Phu Coc too much? Please be kind, but if you can give me some guidance, that’d be a huge help. Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone, I’m starting to plan my next trip to Southeast Asia this winter (2.5 months, leaving in early December), and here’s a rough outline of my route—I’d love to share it with you and hear your thoughts and tips.

- I’ll start in Bangkok and already have three spots I’ve marked: Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, and Uthai Thani (I haven’t been to any of these places yet). - Next, I’d like to cross the country from west to east to reach the Laos border. I’d love suggestions for any interesting stops along this route—I don’t know this part of Thailand at all... - Then I’ll head into Laos, probably at Savannakhet (you can usually get a visa at the border). - > I’m tempted to spend a week in Hoi An, Vietnam, since I loved that city and the area when I visited two years ago. No visa needed for Vietnam now, so it could be a nice little detour. On the map, it doesn’t look too far, but I know you’ve got to be careful with these things, and I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. Any opinions on this? - Back to Laos (maybe via Dakta), and I’ll head south along the Mekong, probably doing the Bolaven Plateau loop that I missed last time. Then Paksé, the 4,000 Islands... I’ve been before, but I’d happily go back. - Crossing into Cambodia, I’ll follow the Mekong down to Phnom Penh (I know this area and love how untouristy it is). From there, I’ll probably spend a few days in Kep (quieter than Kampot). Still undecided, though. - Then back to Thailand (BKK), likely by plane from Phnom Penh since the borders between the two countries are currently closed (plus, let’s be honest, Cambodian roads... ;-). We’ll see how things look when the time comes. - After that, I’d like to explore southern Thailand, taking it slow with short hops. I’ve got my eye on Khao Sok National Park, and I’ve heard good things about Krabi... Again, I don’t know this region well, so any info or tips would be great.

So, I think this should be doable in 2.5 months, especially since I prefer short hops of 300 km max to avoid getting too tired, and I like staying 2-3 days in each place to explore. Plus, I’ll take a week off to relax if I find a spot I love—maybe by the sea for some real downtime.

Je pars avec des amis 12 jours au Cambodge au mois de janvier, et nous allons passer rapidement Phnom Penh, visiter Siem Reap (3j) et aller sur la cote pendant 4 jours. J'aimerais bien faire un petit tour dans une ville afin de voir un peu de campagne, pourquoi pas faire des petites randonnées, si possible dans des coins authentiques.

J'hésite entre aller 3 jours soit à Battambang ou soit à Kampong Cham. Quel coin me conseillez-vous ? Ce serait plutôt pour des visites de lieux culturels, voir de beaux paysages et trouver des villages avec des gens sympas.

Travel in this zone (up to 50 km from the border) is dangerous and strongly discouraged.

Furthermore, given the latest developments in the security situation, French travelers and residents are urged to exercise extreme caution in all northern and western provinces bordering Thailand, especially when traveling outside major urban areas (Siem Reap - including Angkor, and Battambang).

In these regions, it is recommended to closely monitor local news.

The land border between Thailand and Cambodia has been closed since June 23 for an indefinite period. It is therefore necessary to take an air route to enter or leave Cambodia.

Nearby tourist areas are strongly discouraged: the Mom Bei region (Preah Vihear province) and the temple complexes of Ta Moan Thom, Ta Moan Tauch, and Ta Krabei (Oddar Meanchey province).

Access from or to the Laotian and Vietnamese land borders is not affected by this restriction.

Hello, I’m starting to plan my adventure in Cambodia. I’ve read a lot of your posts and really appreciate all your articles. Now it’s my turn to share my plans with you: 12/01 arrival in PP 13/01 arrival in SR where I’ll meet up with 2 friends for 6 days exploring the temples and surrounding areas 19/01 I’ll leave and finish the trip solo. I fly back on 29/01 at 8 PM, so I’ve got 10 days for a little immersion. The dilemma is whether to: # head to Battambang, then make my way to PP, Kampot, and 2 nights by the sea # go to Kratie and head down to Kampot with 2 nights by the sea (or, to cut down on kilometers, go via Kampong Cham to Kampot). Option 2 is my preference. I’m almost 70 and not too keen on rushing 😅 Thanks in advance for your time and any helpful tips! Françoise

Actually, we’re on a rhythm of 1 transfer day and 2 visit days, which doesn’t fully satisfy us. That’s why we’re wondering: Is it possible to stay in one accommodation for visits to Cai Be, Binh Island, and Vinh Long (including our day trip to Sa Dec)? Do you see any other ways to adjust the itinerary? Any oversights? We also still need to look into the transfer details. Thanks for your tips! fg

J'envisage de faire mon premier voyage en solo et j'ai choisi le Cambodge et le Laos. Je pensais faire également le Vietnam mais je me suis vite aperçu que vouloir faire les 3 sans trop courir est un peu prétentieux.

Mon projet d'itinéraire au cambodge: Phnom Penh, Kep/Kampot, Battabang, Siam Reap Au Laos je voudrais le remonter du Sud au Nord : 4000 iles, Pakse et le plateau des Bolavens, Rivière souterraine de Kong Lor, Ventiane, Vang Vieng, Lulang Prabang, Nong Kiaw ou Muang Noi ou Phongsaly. Retour en France au départ de Lulang Prabang Je voudrais rejoindre le sud du Laos par la route via Kratie et Stung Treng

Possible tout ça en 1 mois ? Je voudrais aussi prendre mon temps et savourer chaque endroit.

In the summer of 2016, Tam Thanh was selected by a Korean-Vietnamese joint project called Art For A Better Community. The village was chosen to be their blank canvas, inspired by the success of mural villages in Korea. The project aimed to make Tam Thanh the first painted village of its kind in Vietnam. The joint project included five Korean artists and seven Vietnamese artists, along with local volunteers. They aimed to show Vietnamese people that art could be part of everyday life, no matter where you stand in society. The effort began with about three weeks of wall washing, followed by painting the walls of over 100 residents' houses. The project was a success, and the village came alive with the paintings. The entire village is now a breathtaking gallery just waiting to be explored. The murals capture the life and soul of the village—from young children playing to fishermen in the ocean. A mix of fantastic pieces offers stunning backdrops for photos. The painted art around the town didn’t just have a visual impact; it also had a social one. The village itself was chosen not only for the layout of the houses but also to contribute to economic development opportunities in Tam Thanh. Tourists now visit the once-overlooked village, creating more income for locals and making it a successful "art for a cause" project. For example, an entrepreneurial resident who owned a small local café invested 1,000,000 VND ($390 USD) in a sugarcane press a week before the paintings were completed. Sugarcane juice vendors then multiplied with the growth of tourism (5,000 VND - $0.20 USD). Walking down the village’s single street, it’s common to find locals selling refreshments and handmade crafts. In one house in particular, a tailor and his family are painted on an outer wall with incredible detail. The family started selling tote bags decorated by their young daughter. The asking price for the bags is 100,000 VND ($4 USD). If you’re looking for a way to support the village’s economy, this is it. Since there’s no middleman here, you can be sure your money goes directly to the community. Since the project’s completion, two other villages in the province have now been painted. The new mural villages were created with different local Vietnamese artists to raise awareness about each community’s issues. Tam Hai Island was redecorated to highlight the serious waste problem the population faces due to the lack of treatment plants. Another village on An Binh Island was painted to raise awareness among locals and tourists about the importance of environmental protection. How to get there Route No. 1: Cross the large Cua Dai bridge. Once you’ve crossed it, continue onto Duong 129/Duong Ven Bien. Stay on this road for 33 kilometers. Upside: this route has light traffic, no traffic lights, and no trucks or buses. It’s a great direct route to the village but offers little to see. You’ll eventually reach a crossroads. Turn right toward Tam Ky town, while the left will take you toward the mural village; stay on Road 608 as it turns twice before reaching a bridge. Cross the bridge, and you’ll arrive at Thanh Nien Road. Finally, turn right to reach the village. This route takes about an hour. Route #2: Cross the large Cua Dai bridge. Once you’ve crossed it, continue onto Duong 129/Duong Ven Bien. Stay on this road for 12 kilometers, then turn left onto Road 613, where you’ll continue for 1.5 kilometers until you reach Thanh Nien Road. Finally, turn right and drive 23 kilometers to the painted village. For most of the trip, taking Thanh Nien Road will take you through a much more local part of the region. The journey takes about an hour and a half.

Avec une amie nous avons prévu de passer 4 jours dans le centre du Vietnam. Je sais qu'il faudrait plus de jours que ça pour visiter pleinement le centre mais notre programme nous empêche de dépasser 4 jours. De plus, nous avons lu que Danang pourrait être sacrifiée pour consacrer une journée supplémentaire à Hoi An ou à Hue mais cette ville nous intéresse vraiment, notamment les montagnes de marbre, Lady Buddha et le pont dragon (là encore certains déconseillent ce pont qui ne serait pas très intéressant mais nous sommes tous les 2 d'accord pour vouloir le faire absolument, chacun ses préférences j'imagine).

L'idée serait alors la suivante :

- Vendredi soir : Bus de nuit au départ de Hanoï en direction de Danang.

- Samedi : Visite de Danang : Montagnes de marbre + Lady Buddha + Pont du dragon à 21h (pour l'animation exclusive du week end) + autres en fonction du temps disponible. Est-ce envisageable en 1 seule journée ? Nuit à Danang.

- Dimanche : Bus le matin en direction de Hoi An. Visite de Hoi An entre dimanche et lundi. Nous souhaiterons visiter la vieille ville bien sûr mais pour le reste nous ne sommes pas encore sûrs de nous. Que recommandez vous avec le ticket qui offre le droit de visiter 5 monuments/musées ? Tra Que, Water Coconuts et l'île de Cam Kim valent-ils le coup? De manière générale, que nous conseilleriez-vous à Hoi An en 2 jours ? Dimanche nuit à Hoi An.

-Lundi : Poursuite de la visite de Hoi An. Bus le soir en direction de Hue. Nuit à Hue.

- Mardi : Concernant Hue en 1 jour, vous semble-t-il possible de visiter la cité impériale, la pagode de la dame céleste et 2 tombeaux ? Un autre programme serait-il préférable ? En sachant que vers 18h sera pris un bus retour pour Hanoï.

Le choix de 1 jour Danang / 2 jours Hoi An / 1 jour Hue est quasiment définitif (bien que nous aurions aimé consacrer 1 jour de plus à Hue mais nous ne voulons pas sacrifier Danang à part si tout le monde est d'accord pour nous dire que c'est la meilleure solution ?).

2 amis et moi même partons au Vietnam du 22 novembre au 13 décembre 2019, c'est notre 1er voyage dans ce beau pays et il faut essayer de contenter tout le monde.Nous souhaitons faire un voyage en itinérance et éviter au maximum les touristes (même si je sais qu'on en rencontrera forcément). Je recherche des suggestions sur l'itinéraire, les modes de transport que nous avons projeté. L'itinéraire que nous souhaitons faire est le suivant : 1/ Arrivé à hanoi le 23/11 et visite du 23 PM au 24/11 soir 2/ Départ en bus 10h30 le 25/11pour visiter la baie de Lan Ha via Cat Ba(bus-mini bus et ferry) 25-27/11 : Baie de Lan Ha (nuit sur une jonque) 27/11 soir : départ de Cat Ba pour Sapa (nous hésitons a faire la province Ha giang mais il faut compter 5 jrs) , visite des villages ethnique et le 01/12 : marché de Bac Ha (nous ommes à la recherche d'un guide francophone pour visiter ces villages et dormir chez l'habitant). 01/12 soir : Départ de Lao Cai jusqu'à Ninh Binh et visite de la Baie d'Along terrestre du 02/12 au 04/12 04/12 soir :train jusqu'à Hué arrivée le 05/12 visite de la ville 06/12 Départ de Hué pour Hoi An (du 06/12 au 07/12 visite de Hoi an) 08/12 matin : Départ de Da nang en avion pour Can Tho et visite avec guide du delta du 08 au 11/12 11/12 soir retour sur HCMV et visite de la ville le 12/12 13/12 : Départ pour la France Qu'en pensez vous? Nous souhaitons vraiment faire la visite des villages ethniques, de la baie d'along terrestre et du delta du Mékong (Hanoi-Baie d'Along-Province de Sapa-Baie d'along terrestre-Hué-Hoi An-Delta du Mkg-HCMV). Bonjour ! Nous partons 20 jours pour le Vietnam en septembre prochain, avec une arrivée à Hanoi et un départ à Ho Chi Minh Ville. Après m'être pas mal renseignée, j'ai envisagé cet itinéraire, et j'aurais souhaité savoir ce que vous en pensiez, étant plus habitués que moi :

Les principaux trajets se feront en bus et trains de nuit

Mes doutes sont principalement sur Delta du Mekong : 2 ou 3 jours ? Baie terrestre : 2 ou 3 jours ? Plus de temps à Hoi An ?

Voilà l'itinéraire approximatif. Sachant qu'on est désireux de varier ce que l'on va voir et faire, on aime beaucoup la nature les paysages les randos, on voudrait voir des animaux aussi, mais on aime également très bien manger haha donc les endroits avec une bonne gastronomie locale sont très importants.

Est ce que cet itinéraire semble cohérent ? Est ce que je manque des endroits inmanquables ? Est ce qu'il n'y a pas trop de ville sur la fin ? Dalat + Hoi an + hue + Hanoi, en + sachant qu'il ne fait pas très beau au nord en février ? Que modifieriez vous en somme ? Par exemple j'ai entendu de bonnes choses sur la région de mondolkiri au Cambodge niveau nature et paysages... Mais je suis ouvert à toute suggestion !
