Hi everyone, I’m starting to plan my next trip to Southeast Asia this winter (2.5 months, leaving in early December), and here’s a rough outline of my route—I’d love to share it with you and hear your thoughts and tips.

- I’ll start in Bangkok and already have three spots I’ve marked: Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, and Uthai Thani (I haven’t been to any of these places yet). - Next, I’d like to cross the country from west to east to reach the Laos border. I’d love suggestions for any interesting stops along this route—I don’t know this part of Thailand at all... - Then I’ll head into Laos, probably at Savannakhet (you can usually get a visa at the border). - > I’m tempted to spend a week in Hoi An, Vietnam, since I loved that city and the area when I visited two years ago. No visa needed for Vietnam now, so it could be a nice little detour. On the map, it doesn’t look too far, but I know you’ve got to be careful with these things, and I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. Any opinions on this? - Back to Laos (maybe via Dakta), and I’ll head south along the Mekong, probably doing the Bolaven Plateau loop that I missed last time. Then Paksé, the 4,000 Islands... I’ve been before, but I’d happily go back. - Crossing into Cambodia, I’ll follow the Mekong down to Phnom Penh (I know this area and love how untouristy it is). From there, I’ll probably spend a few days in Kep (quieter than Kampot). Still undecided, though. - Then back to Thailand (BKK), likely by plane from Phnom Penh since the borders between the two countries are currently closed (plus, let’s be honest, Cambodian roads... ;-). We’ll see how things look when the time comes. - After that, I’d like to explore southern Thailand, taking it slow with short hops. I’ve got my eye on Khao Sok National Park, and I’ve heard good things about Krabi... Again, I don’t know this region well, so any info or tips would be great.

So, I think this should be doable in 2.5 months, especially since I prefer short hops of 300 km max to avoid getting too tired, and I like staying 2-3 days in each place to explore. Plus, I’ll take a week off to relax if I find a spot I love—maybe by the sea for some real downtime.

Hi there, I’m so glad the VoyageForum is back up. Reading 'Montagnard74’s' Laos trip report (which I read yesterday) made me want to share my own (which I already posted a year ago on another forum). Here’s a little recap of our 3 weeks in northern Laos, plus a few days in Vientiane. By the way, we could easily go back to the north—there’s so much to see and do; probably in a few years.

This was our 3rd trip to Laos after having already done:

1st trip in 2012 (3 weeks), a quick overview: Vientiane Vang Vieng Luang Prabang Plain of Jars

2nd trip in 2017 (1 month): Vientiane all the way to the 4,000 Islands via Thakhek, Kong Lor, the Bolaven Plateau, Savannakhet, Pakse...

Our 2023 itinerary (1 month): Vientiane Luang Prabang Muang Ngoi Nong Khiew Luang Namtha Muang Sing Boten Vang Vieng Vientiane

Some general info (2023): For those who’ve already been to Laos: everything has gone up a lot—I think prices have almost doubled for transport, accommodation, meals... everything. But Laos is still a budget-friendly country for us. As a couple, we spent 1,100 € for a month, all included (and we definitely didn’t skimp on massages :)).

Don’t trust the transport signs posted everywhere—at travel agencies, bus terminals, hotels... THEY’RE ALL WRONG (especially the schedules). They haven’t been updated since before Covid.

There are hardly any bikes for rent anymore, but scooters are easy to find everywhere. We switched our mode of transport toward the end of our stay: from bikes to scooters, which let us go farther. In Vientiane, we only saw one bike rental place, near Ong Teu Pagoda.

BCEL bank doesn’t charge a commission on foreign currency exchanges. Using ATMs is expensive due to fees. Outside Laos, Lao kip are basically worthless. There’s so much inflation that I couldn’t find a single bank or exchange office willing to swap the kip we had left. So, don’t exchange too much toward the end of your trip.

Some little tips from our experience (2023): The Muang Koua to Muang Ngoi boat still runs daily. At the dam, you have to get off and take a bus, then get back on the boat.

The boat from Muang Ngoi to Nong Khiew only leaves at 9:30 AM (don’t miss it or you’ll pay a lot for a private boat). From Nong Khiew to Muang Ngoi, there are at least two boats a day.

From Luang Namtha to Muang Sing: 4 to 5 buses a day, the last one leaves around 3:30 PM.

From Luang Namtha or Muang Sing to Nateuy or Boten (to catch the new train): 3 to 5 buses a day.

The new train is really hard to book—it’s often fully booked 48 hours in advance, even the local train (5 hours from Boten to Vientiane instead of 3 hours on the high-speed train). (That makes it tough to travel day by day, which we love... too bad.) For baggage checks: don’t bring anything flammable (sprays...) or sharp. My mosquito repellent (flammable but in a small plastic bottle) got through. Water bottles and a tiny pocketknife are okay. But it seems to depend on the station.

Some guesthouses prefer to be paid in dollars, otherwise the price is much higher.

If you’re entering Laos from Vietnam via Dien Bien Phu, you have to get your visa at the embassy in Hanoi—otherwise, you’ll be refused at the border (no e-visa or visa on arrival).

Apart from Luang Prabang, Vientiane, and Muang Ngoi/Nong Khiew, there are very few tourists.

TREK DANS LA REGION SUD DE PHONGSALY – Massif de l’Elephant (PhuSang) question 2 : Je souhaite éviter (pour des questions de longueur de transport) de me rendre à Phongsaly mais il semble que la région du sud soit accessible depuis BounTai ou NamLy. Quelqu’un qui est passé dans cette région a-t-il des conseils à me donner ? question 3 : Connaissez-vous un guide local francophone ou anglophone susceptible d’organiser un voyage dans cette région ? ou bien une agence à recommander ?question 4 : Si je passe par une agence, à quel endroit est-il préférable que je réserve : PhongSaly, Oudomxai, Muang La, Pak Nam Noy, Boun Tai ?

J9. Fin du TREK - MUANG KOUA - MUANG NGOI en bateau question 5 : Je ne trouve pas beaucoup d’infos mais il semble qu’il n’y ait des départs que le matin vers Muang Ngoi ?

J10. MUANG NGOI question 6 : Plutôt que de dormir deux nuits à Muang Ngoi, je pensais y dormir la première, et passer la seconde dans un village alentour avant de revenir à Muang Ngoi le lendemain et repartir pour Nong Khiaw le même jour. Est-ce envisageable?

VANG VIENG question 8 : En discutant, je trouve des avis très divers sur Vang Vieng, je suis moi-même passé par le Laos en 2012 en venant de Chine et j'avais décidé de continuer vers la Thailande sans descendre plus bas que Luang Prabang. Les commentaires que j'en avais eus par les voyageurs rencontrés étaient souvent très négatifs. Il semble néanmoins que depuis quelques années il y a eu un effort de la part du gouvernement pour transformer ce bourg en coin paisible... Je trouve aujourd'hui de très bons avis avec des personnes qui ont trouvé les alentours de Vang Vieng très beaux et toujours "authentiques"... On pensait donc y consacrer une ou deux journée à se balader dans la campagne environnante. Et vous, vous y retournerez ?

question 9 : Sinon, entre LP et Vientiane, avez-vous d'autres coins à nous recommander? Ou bien une route particulière à emprunter pour profiter des paysages et d’arrêts le long du chemin ?

We’re heading to Vietnam in February as a family (2 adults and 2 kids) for 9 full days, and I was thinking of this itinerary:

Day 1: Hanoi Day 2: Halong Bay (Lan Ha) Day 3: Halong Bay (Lan Ha) Day 4: Hue Day 5: Danang Day 6: Danang Day 7: Hoi An Day 8: Hoi An/My Son Day 9: Hanoi

After reading almost all the discussions about Vietnam, I don’t see anything about transportation options for getting from Hue to Danang, then from Danang to Hoi An. Any ideas (train, bus)? From the map, it looks like Danang is close to Hoi An—easily accessible by taxi, right?

Also, after reading lots of comments and websites, I’ve noticed that Danang, aside from being a big developing city, seems to be more about hotels for relaxing on the beach—very laid-back, isn’t it? Not really a place to visit like Hanoi or Hoi An.

Generally speaking, if you have any recommendations for the itinerary or tips, I’d love to hear them.

Des recommendations ? Mieux vaut Booker sur place ou via une Agence à Hanoi ? (j'ai trouvé une pour 135$ 2 jours 1 Nuit depuis Hanoi. Deuxième chose j'aimerai faire les montagnes au nord autour de HakGiang dont 2 jours à Sapa) pour environ 5 jours. Des recommendations ? Est-ce faisable en bus ? Je ne me sens pas du tout à l'aise à l'idée de louer un scooter. Merci d'avance !

Bonjour, Nous sommes un couple avec nos 2 filles de 12 et 15 ans et nous serons au vietnam du 14/02 au 01/03. Quelqu'un peut il me conseiller sur l itinéraire en arrivant par Hanoï , sachant que nous voulons faire du Nord au sud avec en incontournable Baie de lan ha ( halong) et la baie terrestre d Halong, au centre Hoi an puis au sud le Delta du Mekong. Enfin nous souhaitons terminer par au moins 3 ou 4 jours de Balnéaire. En février, il fait froid donc certaines agences me conseillent quand meme le nord et d autres non ? Une alternative proposer et Mai Chau à priori ou rester un peu plus dans la campagne de Hoï an dans le centre . Je suis un peu perdue. Merci pour vos conseils.

Hello, We’re a family of four with two teens aged 16 and 18. We’re heading to Thailand this summer. We’ll arrive in Bangkok and plan to take a flight to Luang Prabang. I’ve seen there are some great visits and excursions to do (temples, markets, waterfalls) and maybe even venture a bit north to places like Nong Khiaw, Muang Xay, Muang Ngoy, or Oudom Xay. But I’ve also heard about the Bokeo region with the Gibbon Experience. Since we won’t be able to do everything, I’d love to hear about your experiences, impressions, and advice on the two options I’m considering, especially since we’ll be meeting family in Chiang Mai, Thailand, afterward.

Option 1: A loop from Luang Prabang heading slightly north, then a flight from Luang Prabang to Chiang Mai.

Option 2: A few days in Luang Prabang, exploring within a few dozen kilometers around, then heading to Bokeo province for the 2-day/1-night Gibbon Experience. For this option, I saw on Rome2Rio that it’s possible to book a ferry trip on the Mekong from Luang Prabang to Huay Xay—they mention about 8 hours. But is that realistic? What type of boat is it? Then, to get to Chiang Mai, there aren’t many options—bus or minivan—but how does crossing the border work?

Finally, for those of you who’ve been to Laos in August, what was the weather like? We’ve already visited Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia during the same period over the past four years and weren’t really bothered by bad weather.

I’m planning and organizing a wonderful trip to Vietnam from mid-March to mid-April 2026, traveling independently for a month with my wife to enjoy her new retirement. Here’s a summary of our itinerary: We arrive in Ho Chi Minh City on the morning of Wednesday, March 18, and depart from Hanoi on the evening of Thursday, April 16. First, I’d like to head to Ho Chi Minh City because the temperatures are high in that region in mid-March. After that, we’ll visit Phu Quoc Island and then the Mekong Delta. We’ll return to Ho Chi Minh City and take a flight to Hue for 2 days, then Tam Coc / Ninh Binh (2-3 days), and Cat Ba Island with a visit to Lan Ha Bay (4 days). We’ll spend a few days in Hanoi, followed by 3-4 days in Sapa with some hikes, and then the Ha Giang loop (4 days). (I’m a motorcyclist—I ride a BMW trail bike and have taken care of renewing my international license.) We’re considering renting a motorcycle or bicycles when needed, except in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The weather in northern Vietnam in early April should theoretically be decent. Finally, we’ll return to Hanoi before heading back to Paris and the Pays de la Loire. Unfortunately, I’m skipping Angkor in Cambodia. I’d like to have a guide for 1 or 2 days in Sapa (which typical agency would you recommend?), and I’m wondering if I should book an agency for the 4 days in Ha Giang. I prefer my independence and don’t really like the "group" aspect of agencies. I’ll rent a 150cc motorcycle, and my wife will ride with me. Other questions: What are some good, typical accommodations to book in the places we’ve identified? Thanks for any info. Did I forget anything, or should we adjust our itinerary? Hello, We’ll arrive in Hanoi on April 17, 2025, and plan to head to the Northwest (Sapa region) and Northeast starting on April 20. How many days do you recommend for this trip? We’re two couples and a 4-year-old child. Should we book through an agency in Hanoi and do the circuit by van, or can we manage with buses—like an overnight bus from Hanoi to Sapa, then 2–3 days in the Sapa region, followed by a bus from Sapa to Ha Giang for a 3-day loop? Bonjour! J'aimerais faire un voyage au vietnam de fin mars à fin avril pour un séjour d'environ 3-4 semaines. Je ne connais absolument rien du vietnam c'est pour cela que je me tourne vers vous. Je suis aller en thailande 2 fois et j'ai adoré mais cette fois j'aimerais visité un autre pays de l'asie, le vietnam. Je pense que pour un séjour de 3-4 semaine c'est impossible de tout visité le pays donc j'aimerais savoir si je serai mieux de visité le nord-centre ou le centre-sud selon mes critères suivent.

Ce que j'aime: - Durant mon séjour j'aimerais faire de la plongé. Donc j'aimerais avoir les plus beau spot de plongé du vietnam. - Les plages. J'aimerais voir les plus belles plages du vietnam. - Les incontournable. Que sa soit un temple majestueux, des paysages a coupé le souffle, les plus beau couché du soleil peu importe j'aimerais voir les '' incontournable '' du vietnam. Les endroits a voir absolument. - Les festivités. J'adore les endroits où il y a du monde, rue avec bar exemple kaosan road thalaide, les endroits de party. - La bouffe de rue ou style night market

Bref j'aimerais avoir un bon itinéraire sans perdre de temps. J'aimerais avoir des conseil sur les moyen de transports: ce qui revient le moin cher et le plus facile pour ce déplacé d'une ville à l`autre. Est-ce recommendé de ce déplacé en scooter. Pour l'hébergement. Est-ce que c'est facile d'hébergé chez des gens et par quel moyen? Donc quel est le meilleur moyen d`hébergment ainsi que le moin couteux. Valeur de l'argent: combien de dong j`aurai besoin pour 1 mois au vietnam et quel est le meilleur moyen pour retiré de l'argent sans trop payé de frais. Où peut-on se procuré une carte sim pour l'utilisation du cell.

Bref tout les meilleur conseil les plus pertinent serai très apprécié!! Merci d'avance

Voilà l'itinéraire approximatif. Sachant qu'on est désireux de varier ce que l'on va voir et faire, on aime beaucoup la nature les paysages les randos, on voudrait voir des animaux aussi, mais on aime également très bien manger haha donc les endroits avec une bonne gastronomie locale sont très importants.

Est ce que cet itinéraire semble cohérent ? Est ce que je manque des endroits inmanquables ? Est ce qu'il n'y a pas trop de ville sur la fin ? Dalat + Hoi an + hue + Hanoi, en + sachant qu'il ne fait pas très beau au nord en février ? Que modifieriez vous en somme ? Par exemple j'ai entendu de bonnes choses sur la région de mondolkiri au Cambodge niveau nature et paysages... Mais je suis ouvert à toute suggestion !

Days 9, 10, 11: Head north for treks with ethnic minorities Day 12: Head to the Mekong for a cruise After that, I’m not sure whether to return via Chiang Rai or Vientiane to get back to Bangkok. I’m currently looking at itineraries, hotels, excursions, transport, etc. For the route, nothing’s set in stone yet, but we’d do: Vientiane - Vang Vieng - Luang Prabang - Champassak - Pakse. Je prévois de partir environs 2 semaines en décembre pour le nord du Laos.

arrivé à Vientiane le 14 décembre normalement, je partirais sur Vang Vieng puis Luang Prabang et enfin Nong Khiaw et Muang Ngoy.

Ensuite j'aimerais rejoindre la Thailand (Chiang Rai) par la frontière Houei Sai/Chiang Khong via Luang Namtha mais apparemment il n'y aurait pas de bus directe de Nong Khiaw à Luang Namtha (ou alors j'ai pas cherché correctement).

Je vous saurais très reconnaissant si vous avez des tuyaux pour rejoindre Luang Namtha pour par cher. si vous avez quelques recommandations à me faire concernant mon itinéraire je suis également preneur.

Hello everyone, We’re heading to Vietnam for 14 nights over the Christmas holidays as a family of four—I haven’t booked anything yet. I’d love your insights on Halong Bay (or Lan Ha Bay). We’re torn between going or not and spending an extra night in Ninh Binh (or somewhere else you’d recommend! Somewhere with a more picturesque vibe) given the late-December weather and cost (which agency do you recommend?). The upside might be that we’ll be there during the low season, so maybe fewer tourists? (Even though it’d be New Year’s Eve night.) Here’s our itinerary: Arrival in Ho Chi Minh City around 1 p.m. 2nd night in HCMC (no time for the Mekong Delta ☹️) Flight to Da Nang 3 nights in Hoi An Bus to Hue, 1 night in Hue City visit, overnight train to Ninh Binh 2 or 3 nights in Ninh Binh? Our goal is to avoid rushing around too much and take our time, focusing on nature, hiking, and getting to know the locals. Here’s my first draft itinerary: Arrival and departure from Hanoi Sapa and its surrounding area Tam Coc – the "land Halong Bay" and Ninh Binh... Halong Bay (maritime) Cat Ba Island... Hi everyone, I’ve got a big project in northern Vietnam—discovering the most beautiful rice terraces before the harvest... I’m planning to leave around September 15th until October 15th, then spend 15 days exploring the two bays, Lan Ha and Ha Long. In total, 45 days without a visa... I’m traveling solo and very independent. But is it possible to do this kind of trip using local trains and buses? My plan is to leave Hanoi for Nghia Lo (2 days), then Mu Cang Chai (4 days), Sapa (4 days), Bac Ha (2 days), Ha Giang... Hoang Su Phi, then do the Meo Vac loop, Dong Van, etc., to see those stunning karst peaks before heading back to Hanoi. In my research, I haven’t found any buses or vans going from Hanoi to Nghia Lo, even though it’s super popular for its rice terrace landscapes.... I don’t want a daily driver, but I’m thinking I could use moto-taxis to get around locally once I’m there.... What do you think? These rice terraces are a dream for me, along with the markets and all the different ethnic groups, not to mention those spectacular rocky peaks... Is the itinerary too ambitious? I’ve got time on my side. Do you have any solutions? I’ve browsed the forum a lot, but the discussions are 5 or 6 years old, and I think things have changed since then. Hi, We’ve planned a week in the delta, but sometimes I wonder if that’s not too much… We’ll be there in early February, and the idea is to take a taxi straight from Saigon Airport to Ben Tre. I’m counting on 3 nights to recover and adjust after the long trip. Then I was thinking of Sadec, Can Tho, Chau Doc, Ha Tien, and back to Saigon for 3 nights before a flight to Hoi An. We’ve got 6 weeks total, so we have a bit of time. After reading different travel stories, the destinations in the delta seem a bit repetitive—I keep seeing the same excursions. On the other hand, I also think having time is a chance to get to know the local life a little better. My question really comes down to this: for those of you who travel at a relaxed pace, do you have any tips? I’ve heard the floating markets aren’t that interesting anymore. Also, motorbikes aren’t our thing. Thanks

Bonjour, je pars 15 jours au nord du Vietnam fin février. J'arrive à Hanoï comme tout le monde ou presque (2j), puis après je pensais me rendre sur Car Ba, puis Ninh Binh et Mai chau. Pensez vous cela réalisable facilement dans ce sens en 2 semaines ? Je suis preneur d'autres idées d'endroits si le temps ( et le temps😁) me le permet.... Merci pour votre réponse 👍

De retour du Laos avec un vol sur Saïgon il me restera 3 ,4 ou 5 jours pour faire un tour dans le delta du Mékong . ( Aller retour sur Saïgon ) J'aimerais m'arrêter dans les lieux que vous pensez intéressants et parcourir, de- ci , de-là quand c'est possible, la campagne à vélo, loger si possible chez l'habitant ( "maison d'hôtes" homestays.) voir des marchés etc......Si vous avez un itinéraire à me suggérer des lieux à ne pas manquer et des adresses de homestays j'attends vos conseils. PS: J'utiliserai les transports en commun, bus et taxis...

I couldn’t find any recent posts on this topic, so I thought I’d create a new one. We’ve just started planning our family trip to Vietnam this coming August. We’d like to travel from North to South, starting in Hanoi and ending in Ho Chi Minh.

Usually, we rent a car when we arrive and manage on our own. But I get the feeling that in Vietnam, it’s more complicated... It seems like the only option we have is to rent a car with a driver? Is that really the case?

I’m thinking of starting with a cruise in Halong Bay since we arrive on my partner’s birthday, and I wanted a beautiful setting to celebrate it. So, is the option of having a driver wait for 2 days while we’re on the cruise really feasible?

The rest of the itinerary isn’t planned at all yet. I’d love to hear your tips. We’re traveling from August 8th (morning) to the 26th (afternoon).

Voila on part à 2 amies 3 mois en Asie du sud est dès le 6 février

Tout d abord Thaïlande, Cambodge assez rapidement et ensuite on arrive au Vietnam par le delta du Mékong vers le 6 Mars. J avais pensé faire ( vous pouvez me corriger si les étapes sont trop courtes ou trop longues)😂😘 :

-5 ou 6 jours dans ce delta ainsi que le sud

-Puis environ 10 jours dans le centre

-Et remonter environ 13 jours pour le nord

On y sera aux alentours du 20 Mars

On souhaite bien sûr faire l excursion 1 nuit/2 jours dans la baie de Lan HA mais mon dilemme est pour le Nord..

Nous souhaiterions voir des ethnies mais aussi si Possible des rizieres vertes.. Il y en a t il quelque part vers la fin Mars?

Si la réponse est négative vers quel coin se diriger pour les plus magnifiques vues à cette période de l année ?

Est il préférable d aller vers Sapa ou vers la province de Ha Giang

J'envisage de faire mon premier voyage en solo et j'ai choisi le Cambodge et le Laos. Je pensais faire également le Vietnam mais je me suis vite aperçu que vouloir faire les 3 sans trop courir est un peu prétentieux.

Mon projet d'itinéraire au cambodge: Phnom Penh, Kep/Kampot, Battabang, Siam Reap Au Laos je voudrais le remonter du Sud au Nord : 4000 iles, Pakse et le plateau des Bolavens, Rivière souterraine de Kong Lor, Ventiane, Vang Vieng, Lulang Prabang, Nong Kiaw ou Muang Noi ou Phongsaly. Retour en France au départ de Lulang Prabang Je voudrais rejoindre le sud du Laos par la route via Kratie et Stung Treng

Possible tout ça en 1 mois ? Je voudrais aussi prendre mon temps et savourer chaque endroit.
