Chiapas - San Cristobal to Palenque route (Mexico)

I’d like to visit Chiapas this summer with my husband and my son (young adult). After a few days in San Cristobal and the surrounding area, we want to take a bus to Palenque. I’ve heard conflicting things about the danger of being stopped on the road by revolutionaries. We’re planning to take a daytime bus. Is the most direct route safe, or is it wiser to take the long detour via Villahermosa? If you’ve made this trip recently, could you share your thoughts? Thanks

Hi there

This route is all about you and your luck. There might be roadblocks, or you might slip through. There’s no certainty. So yes, you’ll probably read reports from travelers who weren’t stopped, but there are also opposite cases.

Everything is explained in this link: roadblocks in Ocosingo.

Thanks so much! The link is fantastic and will help me plan my trip to Palenque. I have two questions: how far is Palenque airport from the city center? Is it accessible by bus? Do you know if the Maya Train arriving in Palenque is far from the city center? Thanks

The Maya Train station in Palenque is 10 km from the city center. The station isn’t too far from the airport. You won’t have any trouble finding a taxi or combi to get to the center.

Allow about 15 minutes by road to reach the center from the airport.

But I’d recommend staying in the El Panchan area, close to the ruins.

The recommended route is the one via Villahermosa because it's a major highway where all the trucks pass. The San Cristobal–Palenque road is *very* long due to speed bumps every 100m or so...
