Dress code for gala evenings on the Queen Mary 2

We’ve booked the transatlantic crossing on the Queen Mary. I understand that for the gala evenings, we need to wear a tuxedo and an evening gown.
Do we need a very expensive chic evening gown, or can a more modest one still be tasteful? And where can I buy one? I have the same question about the tuxedo. Thanks!
Hi Carribo,
I did the transatlantic crossing from Southampton to NY in May 2024.
The gala evenings are dressy but not really more so than on other cruises I’ve taken with Costa.
Long dresses were common, of course, but there were also women in shorter ones. Same for the men—some wore tuxedos, others just a jacket and tie.
I’d say: have fun but don’t break the bank for one evening.
For my part, it was the first time I’d planned to wear a long dress...
Otherwise, to give you my feedback on this cruise: I was very disappointed.
It was my 10th cruise, and this transatlantic crossing was a dream for me. Unfortunately, my English is basic, and I didn’t hear a single word of French during the 8 days. Not even for safety announcements or disembarkation, even though there were quite a few fellow French travelers.
No entertainment team, and the lectures were only in English—even for my sister and brother-in-law, who’ve lived in the U.S. for 30 years, it was hard to follow!
If you’re a music lover, there’s classical music, but it’s often tied to tea time, so the environment isn’t ideal for enjoying it due to the surrounding noise.
The ship’s library is beautiful, and you’ll find books in different languages.
There’s a self-service laundry on every floor, which is a plus (with an ironing board and iron).
I hope yours lives up to your expectations.
Hello,
For the evening, without a gala, a jacket and trousers for men is just fine. We took a cruise in August to the fjords—my favorite destination. It’s true that it’s annoying not to have any announcements in French, not even the menus in the restaurant, but the ship is magnificent, full of cozy little lounges with different music in each one in the evening. We had classical concerts at sea in the afternoon. The unique library... the calm, the courtesy, the food—I really loved it. Plus, at the café, there are self-service drinks all day: water, tea, coffee, and fruit juice, with carafes of water at the table.
I wish you a great cruise......
