Since my 2024 travel journal is finally posted, I’m diving into planning our September road trip to the part of Arizona we haven’t explored yet and to New Mexico, which we don’t know at all.



Flights, accommodations, and the rental car are all set—I just need to organize the stops. On the day we arrive in Phoenix (we’re staying in Gold Canyon), I’ve planned a visit to Lost Dutchman State Park at sunset with a short hike and a stop at Goldfield Ghost Town. I was thinking of driving as far as Tortilla Flat, but it might be tight, especially since our flight lands at 12:50 PM, and the most scenic part of the Apache Trail seems to be just past Tortilla Flat. The next day, we’re heading to Tucson for three nights. The first day will be dedicated to Saguaro East (near our hotel), the following day to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, then the Bajada Loop Drive with two short hikes, and the North Kidney Road up to the OVL. Finally, on the last day, we’ll visit Sabino Canyon and hike to Seven Falls—and this is where I could use your insights! The hike is 13 km if we don’t take the shuttle. If we do, it’s only 8 km. Are those kilometers flat, or does it climb right from the start? And if we take the shuttle, where should we get off? Is the trail well-marked? I’ve heard it’s not very clearly signposted.

I’m reaching out for your help because I’m a bit lost trying to rent a car in Washington, DC. I’ve already rented twice out West with ALAMO—no issues, brand-new SUVs… This time, I need to rent an SUV for 12 days in Washington and return it at Newark Airport in NYC. I never would’ve thought there’d be such a price difference between the East and West Coasts!!! 12 days out East costs almost the same as 26 days out West! With Alamo out West, full insurance where you return the vehicle no matter its condition is called CDW. Here, it’s not clear at all. I’ve never rented from another company. If I stick with the two "big rental companies," here are my options:

ALAMO DULLES AIRPORT: 1,250 € with additional protection included (96 €) AVIS AIRPORT: 831 € with additional protection included (96 €) Or AVIS downtown WASHINGTON, 700m from my hotel, where I’d save on the taxi to the airport! Same price: 831 €. Has anyone ever picked up a vehicle downtown? Given the small indoor parking lot, I’m guessing the selection is limited. Is there a difference between AVIS and ALAMO? Because between 830 € and 1,250 €??????????? I’m not too familiar with other rental companies. Hello, we rented a car with Alamo that we’ll pick up in Las Vegas. However, for the basic rental, it’s not clear whether there’s a deductible in case of damage... For the included CDW, they just state this, and it doesn’t help much if the basic CDW includes a zero deductible: Thanks if you’ve had any feedback or clarifications that could help me.

The Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) is not valid for damages occurring in Mexico. For those who want to take a helicopter flight in New York:

In mid-April, a sightseeing helicopter flight in NYC turned tragic. A helicopter carrying a Spanish family of five and a pilot crashed into the Hudson River shortly after taking off from Manhattan.

Apparently, the loss of the rotor caused the sudden fall near the West Side Highway.

Despite rescue efforts, all six occupants died.

This has reignited the debate over whether helicopters should be banned for sightseeing flights in NYC or elsewhere.

Hi there, I just got the "congratulations" email last night letting me know that our first-choice access to The Wave for June 16, 2025, was approved in the March 1st lottery draw! We thought we’d missed out since we hadn’t heard anything on the 1st or 2nd of March... It’s true that for the past two years, it’s no longer 10 and 10 people like before, but 48 and 16 who are allowed to enter the site through the two lottery processes. That helps balance out the surge in applications that must come with the place’s growing global fame... I haven’t found any info on this, but does anyone know how many applications are typically submitted each month per date for the Advanced Lottery? So, my somewhat lucky track record for 3 attempts: 2 successes for April 2009 and June 2025, and one miss for September 2011. We’re still a little nervous about the likely high temperatures, with hardly any shade or water on-site 😛. At Easter 2009, it had snowed a bit the day before... From what I remember, the access trail from Route 89 to Wire Pass Trailhead was doable without a 4x4, with a bit of ground clearance and careful driving (obviously no storms). A simple Toyota RAV4, like the one we’re planning to rent, should be fine in dry conditions? We’ll be heading there from Page on the morning of 06/16 (how long’s the drive?), then heading to Kanab for 3 nights in the evening. Thanks for any tips you might have! 😉

Hi there. We’re heading out in August from the 3rd to the 23rd to visit our daughter who lives in Nashville, and we’d like to do a road trip from there. 19 days on the ground.

We’re torn between two options:

**Option 1** Day 1 to 4: Nashville Day 4 to 6: Atlanta Day 7 to 11: Savannah + beaches nearby Day 12 to 15: Charleston Day 15 to 16: Asheville Day 17 to 20: Great Smoky Mountains Then back to Nashville for departure

What do you think? We don’t want to drive too much and prefer spending several days in the same place. It’ll be really hot, so the beaches around Savannah and Charleston seemed like a good alternative to sightseeing.

Otherwise, our second idea is Louisiana, but... I’m worried the heat might be even worse there.

Hi everyone, I’m traveling in April with a layover in the United States. I filled out the ESTA form but made a mistake by checking the wrong boxes, so my authorization was denied. I tried again a few days later, this time checking the right boxes, but the application seemed stuck ("AUTHORIZATION DENIED"). I tried one last time a few days ago, and—oh, miracle—"AUTHORIZATION APPROVED". However, I’m still worried because my first request was denied. Could I still be turned away at immigration?! Will there be a record of my first application? Thanks for your help....

This year, we hadn’t planned on going to the United States. After two trips in 2012 and 2014, we needed to refill the piggy bank... But we didn’t count on luck: one late September afternoon in 2014, while randomly browsing the web, I stumbled upon flight tickets for $753 per person for July 2015! After some calculations and hesitation, we decided to shorten the trip compared to the previous year (22 days this time), cut down on hotel costs (80 € per night on average), and skip expensive activities (no helicopter rides, rafting, or guided tours with outfitters, etc.), but we couldn’t pass up such a great opportunity!

Here’s the budget breakdown: - Flight tickets: 3,012 € for 4 (booked directly on AA’s website). One layover on the way out (CDG / Charlotte / Phoenix) and one on the way back (LAX / London / CDG). - Hotels: 1,685 € for 22 nights, averaging 76.60 € per night. We stuck to our budget (and even did better!), thanks to affordable hotels in NM, bookings made when the exchange rate was still favorable, and 2 free nights used on Hotels.com. - Car: 952 € for 22 days renting a standard SUV (Jeep Grand Cherokee). We went through AutoEurope, and the rental company was Dollar. - Gas: Around $20 per day on average (for 5,440 km). - Food: Just under $70 per day on average (for 4 people). We did a lot of grocery shopping for picnics, ate a lot of fast food, and only went to restaurants a few times. - America the Beautiful Pass: Free (the one we bought in July 2014 was still valid until the end of July 2015). - Not covered by the pass: $175 (entry fees for State Parks, a guided tour at Mesa Verde, Pow Wow entry, etc.).

In total, we spent 7,760 € for 4 people over 22 days. On top of that, we added $50 for the NYNY roller coaster (a gift for Hugo) and $135 for the *Mystère* show (a gift for Calista and me).

Here’s the itinerary: - Lost Dutchman SP, Goldfield Ghost Town, and Apache Trail - Chiricahua NM - White Sands NM - White Sands NM, Valley of Fires SP, and Old Town Albuquerque - Taos Pueblo, Pow Wow, and Chimayo - Bandelier NM and Santa Fe - Kasha Katuwe Tent Rocks NM - Shiprock and Mesa Verde NP - Bluff, Gooseneck SP, Road Canyon, and UT95 - Little Wild Horse Canyon and Goblin Valley SP - Capitol Reef NP (Cohab Canyon and Sulphur Creek) - Burr Trail - Zebra Slot Canyon and Lower Calf Creek Falls - Mossy Cave and Cedar Breaks NM - Kanarra Creek and Zion NP (Kolob Canyons) - Coyote Buttes South (Paw Hole) - Zion NP (Progeny Peak) - Snow Canyon SP - Lake Mead and Las Vegas - Las Vegas - Las Vegas - Los Angeles and the trip back

Hi, Just a little question, kinda "silly" but still important... The cooler for a road trip... Either buy a basic one when I arrive in SFO and leave it there... no idea about the price. Or take a foldable one like the Decathlon one I saw for 39.90 for 26 L. It seems like a good option since it weighs only 1 kg when folded... and supposedly keeps things cold for 11 hours without ice. So maybe more space and less "hassle" to get ice...

I’ll admit I’m not a pro at camping and don’t really know the differences between coolers...

We’re on the Roswell–Tucumcari leg. We’ll go through Fort Sumner. After visiting, there are two ways to reach Tucumcari:

Take US 84 to Santa Rosa, see its Blue Hole, then the almost ghost towns on the historic Route 66 (Cuervo, Newkirk, and Montoya). We won’t visit the Route 66 auto museum (we’ll do the one in Tucumcari). The other option is to take 252 and then 209.

The next day, we plan to head to our next stop in Las Vegas (the one in NM) by going up the Mesalands Scenic Byway (104).

Is the detour to Santa Rosa worth it? Are the historic Route 66 sections drivable?

Hi there, We’re doing two loops: from SLC to Grand Tetons/Yellowstone from 06/25 to 06/26 (June 1–8) and another in Utah from 06/25 to 06/26 (June 8–16).

We’ve already been to these areas and are filling in gaps from previous trips—especially in Utah with Capitol Reef, Kanab (including White Pocket—we’ve already done North and South Coyote Buttes), Wahweap Hoodoos, The Narrows, and a few other little treats.

Renting an AWD SUV from Rugged Rentals and bringing a sat phone for the gravel roads.

I use a Revolut card for payments to avoid hefty foreign-exchange fees, but I’m wondering how much cash we should bring for 15 days.

I need to book an SUV in Los Angeles for about 5 weeks, and for various reasons, it’ll be with Hertz. Traditionally, I pick up the vehicle at the airport agency, which I reach by shuttle.

But I’ve noticed that the rate drops by about a third if I pick up the vehicle either at the Marriott hotel at the airport or at the nearby Westin hotel (both hotels are also accessible by shuttle and have a Hertz agency). The selection is probably smaller, and most importantly, I don’t know if these off-site agencies are reliable.

What do you think? Has anyone here had the chance to test them? Thanks in advance!

Hello hello, After several trips to the American West, we’ve booked our next tickets to Texas!!! We’ll be leaving in mid-October and arriving in Dallas. After reading several forums/blogs about Texas, I sketched out what our road trip might look like. But here’s the thing—big snag on Day 13!!! Could you please help me with this plan? Let me know if my draft seems doable or if, on the contrary, the timing is too tight, if I’ve missed any important spots, etc. We’re traveling as a family with our little ones (3 and 9 years old). We’re not big fans of big cities—we prefer hitting the road, doing hikes, driving on backroads, and we’d love to spend Halloween in a small, friendly town to really experience it. Here’s my itinerary: Dallas (overnight since we arrive at 8:30 PM) Dallas/Fort Worth (overnight in FW or nearby) FW/Amarillo (overnight in Amarillo) Amarillo (another night in Amarillo) Amarillo/Palo Duro Canyon SP/Roswell (overnight nearby or in Roswell) Roswell (another night?) (I’ve started looking, and it seems really expensive—August probably doesn’t help...) But it’ll still be cheaper and more nature-focused than motels... We’re considering this route: Salt Lake City - Great Salt Lake - Yellowstone - Grand Teton, then heading back down toward Lake Tahoe, Yosemite (Sequoia Park if we have time), and San Francisco. Do you think this is doable? Any suggestions for other sites to visit? Also, any recommendations for campgrounds in these areas? Thanks in advance!

We’re thinking of heading back to the US but we’re still debating the itinerary. We’d love to revisit New York, but after that...? We’ve already explored the East Coast without making it down to Florida. So we’re wondering if we should go there. New Orleans has been catching our eye, and Memphis with its blues-rock vibe is also really appealing. A road trip that would start on the East Coast and head inland/mid-country. Any suggestions?

Or... we’re even considering stretching all the way to the West Coast: - Passing through LA, which we’d ultimately skipped on our West Coast trip, but maybe it’s not the best time to go with all those wildfires that have devastated iconic spots... - Or heading north to Washington and/or Oregon states, or closer, Montana.

Anyway, I’d love to hear your thoughts on what kind of loop we could do in 4 weeks... Given that in 2023, we spent nearly 6 weeks in the West, covering San Francisco, Yosemite, Death Valley, Mammoth Lake, Monument Valley, Grand Canyon, Page and its surroundings, Arches, Canyonlands, Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Zion, Bryce, and Las Vegas.

On that note, I have to give a big shout-out to Thibaut, aka ITAT, for his time and invaluable advice in planning that West Coast trip. Since then, I’ve really enjoyed taking the time to share tips about places I’ve visited! Speaking of which, don’t hesitate to PM me for West Coast advice! I booked a round-trip to NYC (Newark) from 10/17 to 11/01, 2025 at a good price. Now I need to figure out what to do 😎

The initial idea was to go to Nashville. Why? I don’t really know. For info, we’ve already been to NYC and Washington D.C.

That said, I opened an Excel sheet and put this together:

D1: Arrival at Newark around 9 PM. Pick up car and overnight near the airport D2/3: Philadelphia D4: Lancaster (Amish Village) then drive to Shenandoah NP. Overnight in the northern part of the park (Front Royal?) D5: Scenic road - Overnight in Charlottesville D6: Blue Ridge Parkway - Overnight in Troutville D7: Blue Ridge Parkway - Overnight in Boone D8: Blue Ridge Parkway - Overnight in Asheville D9: Blue Ridge Parkway - Overnight in Gatlinburg D10: Smoky Mountains - Overnight in Gatlinburg

That’s where things get tricky.

If I add 2 nights in Nashville, it really tightens up the end of the trip in terms of mileage.

I thought about doing:

D11/12: Nashville D13: Mammoth Cave > Lexington D14: Fayetteville D15: X D16: Drive back to Newark.

But honestly, I’m not happy with the end.

So I thought about adding Gettysburg by adjusting things and shortening D4, which I felt was too packed: D1: Arrival at Newark around 9 PM. I’d like to visit Niagara Falls from the Canadian side: is an eTA enough for a French citizen (from Toronto or Ottawa) and then public transport? Which Canadian city is the easiest to get there from? I plan to spend one night in Canada before seeing the falls on the American side. Do I need an ESTA to visit the American side for just a few hours and then return to Canada?

Hello everyone, We’re planning a family trip (my wife and our two kids) for 12–13 months in 2026–2027. The idea is to start our journey by biking across the U.S. from July to December 2026. We’re thinking of leaving our bikes there and then traveling by public transport for 3 months in Central America down to Belize (during the U.S. winter). After that, we’d return to the U.S. and finish our trip by bike for about 4 more months.

We’ll need to apply for a B2 visa, but we’ve heard the conditions are for a 6-month stay. Depending on the border officers’ discretion, we *might* be allowed to re-enter the U.S. if we’ve left for a non-contiguous country for a while (which would be our case since we’d go as far as Belize). Has anyone here confirmed this? Have you been in this situation before, and is there a chance we might not be allowed back into the U.S. after leaving at the end of 2026?

Another question about the B2 visa interview. We’ve read it’s best to be transparent with the officer. Should we mention our full plan (including the trip to Belize and return to the U.S.), or should we only talk about the first part?
