ESTA form denied then approved!

Hi everyone,
I’m traveling in April with a layover in the United States.
I filled out the ESTA form but made a mistake by checking the wrong boxes, so my authorization was denied.
I tried again a few days later, this time checking the right boxes, but the application seemed stuck ("AUTHORIZATION DENIED").
I tried one last time a few days ago, and—oh, miracle—"AUTHORIZATION APPROVED".
However, I’m still worried because my first request was denied. Could I still be turned away at immigration?!
Will there be a record of my first application?
Thanks for your help....
I called the U.S. Embassy in Paris, and the person I spoke to told me there’s no problem if the second request was approved.
However, based on what I’ve read in various online documents, all requests after approval are kept for their validity period and then archived for 12 years!!!!
http://french.france.usembassy.gov/root/pdfs/esta.pdf
On page 2 of that link: "Once the form is completed and submitted online for approval, it will be compared to the appropriate government databases. From the moment the data is submitted online, it remains active for the entire period the ESTA authorization is valid. The Department of Homeland Security will retain this information for an additional year and then archive it for 12 years to allow for
information searches related to security or investigative matters."
Or here: http://www.expatriation.com/etats-unis-formulaire-esta-probleme-erreur.html
"Retention of data collected after an ESTA request
The authorization is valid for two years. The data provided in the initial request remains active for one year after expiration. If there’s no renewal, the data is no longer active but remains archived for 12 years."
So, I’m still in the dark but plan to go anyway since I already have my flight tickets. But if someone can reassure me by confirming the validity of my second request... I’d be less stressed when I arrive at immigration!

I just had a similar issue.
I filled out the ESTA form for each member of my family. I got approval for myself, my wife, one of my sons, but my eldest son was denied.
I contacted the embassy in Paris, who told me they couldn’t do anything except apply for a temporary visa. But it was too late to make the request given my imminent departure.
They told me my son would be turned away by immigration if we left anyway.
So, a huge hassle with non-refundable tickets. 🙁
I still called 00 1 2023443710, the number the Embassy gave me, which is an immigration service.
I called this U.S. number, spoke in English, and with his passport number, they told me to reset the form.
It’ll need to be filled out again within 24 hours.
So if your ESTA is DENIED, call this number.

Hi,
Just checking in about your trip—did you end up going and returning without any issues?
Did you run into any problems with the ESTA application?
Mine was denied because I checked the wrong box.
I’m waiting 24 hours to reset the form and hoping it works this time.
Please keep me posted!

hi lolokarello
I actually went to Roatan (island in Honduras), but I won’t lie—I really thought I’d be making an express round trip!!!
When I arrived at Newark (first layover), the immigration officer set my passport aside and asked me to follow him. I did, and he took me down to some basement area where I waited for over 40 minutes. He called me back and had me explain the situation... for over 30 minutes!!! He then wrote up a long report and stamped my ESTA... phew!
At first, he told me I’d be sent back on the next flight to France, but luckily, my negotiation worked!!
Just so you know, you still have to wait 10 days (I think... maybe even 15) to reapply for an ESTA if it’s been denied...
I was only in transit, so I think he was a bit more understanding... but if it’s to stay in the US, they keep records of all ESTAs, whether denied or approved!!!
So the risk can be taken—they’re human... not very cool, the vibe was pretty tense, and they don’t joke around, but they *can* be understanding!!!
Hope this helps, and safe travels... if you decide to go....
hi,
I just wanted to thank you because, without meaning to, you helped me out!! So, I filled out the ESTA form two days ago and it was denied! My best friend filled it out right after me and—boom—hers was approved! We were shocked! We figured I must’ve made a mistake... Anyway, since we did this in the evening, it was impossible to call the embassy. So we looked for solutions online and came across your post. We called the number for the U.S., and within two hours, everything was sorted. I redid the form, and it was approved!!! So thank you for sharing that number—since we’re leaving on October 5th, I was sure they wouldn’t give me a visa, and I already saw myself stuck in France 🙁!! Thanks again!

A huge thank you for sharing this number!!!! I just had the same issue—my ESTA was denied (I actually answered "yes" by mistake, obviously, to the last question about diplomatic immunity). I called the number, the person canceled my first ESTA, and I was able to reapply within the hour, and it was approved! I also sent an email (there’s a questions section at the bottom of the ESTA application): they were kind enough to reply the next day, pointing out the mistake I’d made, telling me to cancel my request, and saying I could reapply—which was accepted!!!! Phew, phew, phew, because otherwise, it would’ve meant a visa application in Paris with non-refundable tickets!
Thanks again!
Hi there,
My wife and I are leaving next week with our two kids. I applied for the ESTA this morning, and now I’m panicking—my wife’s application was refused, and we have no idea why?!!!
I called the number you provided, but all I got was a voicemail saying the service won’t be available until January 2011?!!
Do you have any other advice for me?!!
Thanks in advance,

Hi there,
I just got back from New York and I want to thank GBELISSA so much for sharing the immigration phone number 00 1 2023443710, which lets you reset your ESTA.
I’d made a mistake by answering YES to the third question when filling out my ESTA application. After my request was denied, I called the US Embassy in Paris, and they told me there was nothing they could do—it wasn’t their responsibility. So, I called that number (just a heads-up, they only speak English) and explained why I’d made the mistake. They reset my ESTA, and two days later, I had "ESTA APPROVED." Still, I left for New York with a bit of apprehension.
When I arrived, there was no issue with the agent who stamped my passport—but he didn’t give it back. He just handed back my wife’s and kids’ passports. Then he asked me to follow him to the immigration offices. I spent 20 minutes explaining why I’d answered YES, and afterward, they gave me permission to enter the country—not without a smile that said a lot about what he was thinking.
Thanks!
So, if your ESTA is DENIED, call this number.
Thanks!

hi there
I’m married to a US resident (green card holder) and it’ll be 2 years in July. My husband filed for a green card for me. I’m French, and during my last trip to the US I was 5 months pregnant. At 6 months, I was rushed to the hospital because I was losing amniotic fluid and bleeding, so they decided to hospitalize me to avoid losing my babies. The problem is I stayed in the hospital for a month and had a C-section. The babies were immediately put on respiratory support, etc.—the whole works. So I ended up staying in the US for over 3 months because of that, about 4 and a half months total. After that, I went back to France with my little ones. Then, a week ago, I tried to go to the US to spend the holidays with my husband, but the airline refused to let me board because my ESTA application was denied. They told me to apply for a visa, but I don’t know which type of visa to ask for.
What should I do?? Can anyone help me, please??
Thanks for reading—it was a bit long.
Hello,
You’ll need a B2 visa: http://french.france.usembassy.gov/niv/tourisme-affaires.html It’s too late for you, but for anyone who might face an "overstay" against their will, you can request a 30-day extension of your Visa Waiver Program from USCIS (for valid reasons, of course, like a medical emergency or canceled flight): https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/1024/kw/overstayed%20still%20esta/session/L3NpZC9HWXhNY3N0bA%3D%3D
However, if your ESTA is denied, there’s no point going to the airport—you won’t be allowed to board since you’re no longer eligible for the Visa Waiver Program.

Hi everyone.
I’m updating this post, which is already several years old, to add my personal experience. First of all, a big THANK YOU to you for sharing that number, which saved my life (well, my flight ticket ^^) and now lets me sleep at night . I filled out my ESTA application yesterday. I completed everything correctly, but at the last question, where it asks, "Have you ever stayed longer than the 90 days allowed by U.S. law?"—well, I answered YES because the "ever" threw me off!! And that mistake got me a DENIAL :( ... even though this is my first trip to the United States. So, just a heads-up that even a tiny mistake can cost you time, money, and stress before your trip. I called the number, and someone very calm and courteous reset my application (because if you reapply after a denial, it won’t work...) and told me to wait 20 minutes before redoing everything. And then—IT WORKED!!! YES! Hoping I won’t have any issues when I get there, anyway...
Goodbye everyone 😉

Hi, I’m updating the discussion! I had the exact same issue as you, Zdral—I messed up on the first question because "have you ever" really threw me off—ugh!
I tried calling the number but no answer; it even hangs up sometimes... I’ll try again later. But if they agree to reset my application, should I answer "yes" to the question "Have you ever been denied a visa for the USA?"
It’s a bit ambiguous for me...
Thanks for your replies! I really hope it works out—I leave on April 6th... Especially since I already traveled 3 years ago and everything went smoothly; my ESTA was approved on the first try...
Have a great day! !
"Have you ever stayed longer than the 90 days allowed by U.S. law?"
Really ambiguous, and I’m not kidding. Makes you wonder if it wasn’t a robot translating from English to French!
It’d be so much simpler to write:
Have you ever exceeded the 90-day limit...

The phone number is still valid. I used it this week for the same ESTA denial issue due to incorrect form filling (I had opened multiple applications). The immigration officer checked and confirmed it wasn’t actually a denial (so I had to answer "no" to the "visa refusal" question in the final questionnaire). No waiting period to reapply. Huge thanks to Gbelissa anyway, because it’s really hard to get info from the US Embassy in Paris. It’s just an answering machine that directs you to websites. Benoit
Hello,
Eight years after this exchange, I stumbled upon this forum... Indeed, today, in 2017, I had the same problem! Two days before taking a flight to NYC, my ESTA application was denied without any explanation. After searching a bit online, I found this forum... And the immigration services phone number shared by Gbellissa in 2009 is still active! Unbelievable!! I called that number in desperation and reached an agent who was perfectly clear, polite, and understandable. They immediately accessed my file using my passport number. In my case, the application was denied because I had reported my passport lost... six years ago! I later found it again, over a year afterward, but this report was clearly not recorded by the French police or transmitted to Interpol! My issue isn’t resolved, and I have to cancel my trip. But this situation could happen to anyone!
Anyway, for any ESTA issues, the U.S. Embassy won’t help you. Instead, call +1 202-344-3710. Good luck! Cyril

I don’t understand. For a whole year, you didn’t need your passport? Is that it?

Hi there,
On ALL the websites and forums about the US West, it’s clearly stated that you shouldn’t buy ANYTHING until your ESTA is approved... even if you’re "squeaky clean" and have had previous trips approved!!!
It doesn’t just happen to others—it happens every day. A case of mistaken identity, a glitch, a slip of the finger on the keyboard, and boom! You’re stuck with a visa application.
See you around,

This is gonna be tricky... You can try calling the number above: 001 20 23 44 37 10.
But logically, if the ESTA is denied, you need to apply for a VISA.
Did you answer "No" to all the questions?
Did you visit any country that’s on the list of destinations banned for getting an ESTA?...
How long did it take for the response to arrive after your request?
What’s your nationality?
Maybe you know someone who speaks English well and can help you out.
Something must’ve happened in your life since your last trip to the United States…
But for April 16th, that’s mission impossible.
Ils ne savaient pas que c'était impossible, alors ils l'ont fait.
Also check if it's not your bank blocking the payment... You never know!
So the day after my request, I’m a French national and haven’t traveled to the listed countries, so I don’t understand. Yes, I’ll have to try. I’ll check with my credit card to see if visa refusal is covered. Thanks for your feedback.
It’s not just about travel. In 12 years, you can get married, divorced, etc. On the ESTA application, you also provide your social media accounts (the answer isn’t mandatory, but if you didn’t list them and you have an account, they may have checked). That can also influence the decision—otherwise, they wouldn’t ask. I don’t think credit card insurance covers trip cancellation for this reason, but try calling them.

From what I’ve read, the answer is no, so it’s not a payment issue.

Hi there,
I’m heading to Laos next spring, but I have a question about the Thai arrival/departure form. I’ll be flying PAR-BKK, then taking the train to Laos (so exiting Thailand), and later re-entering Thailand by train to catch my return flight. Do I need to fill out two forms in this case?

Hi there,
I have a 9-seater passenger vehicle that I use for my business in Paris, transporting people.
I’m planning to go to Algeria with my family.
The vehicle registration lists my company as the owner.
Can I get a TPD (Temporary Admission Document)?
Will I need a KBis extract or a power of attorney?!?
Thanks for your help.
Worst case, I can add my personal name as a co-owner on the registration, but that would be a real shame!

Hi there,
I’m a French citizen living in Switzerland, and I set up an RV LLC in Montana, USA. Through that, I was able to register 3 vehicles (an RV, a Jeep, and a Harley) with Montana plates.
I’d like to spend 3 months in Mexico, but it seems complicated—maybe even impossible—to cross the border from the US with all 3 vehicles.
Can anyone give me some advice?

Hi there,
I bought a one-way flight (Ryanair) and a return flight (EasyJet) to spend a week in Morocco in April. My passport expires 3 weeks after the return date. Some websites say the passport must be valid for 3 months at the time of entry. However, it will still be valid both on entry and return, but its validity will only be 1 month at the time of entry (and 3 weeks on the return date, everything prepaid).
It's an individual family trip.
The consulate can't give me an answer—they're still looking into it (really!)
Will Ryanair let me board in Beauvais in 3 weeks?
Thanks for your advice—this is a bit urgent 😕😕😕😕

Hello,
Last year, we stayed for 3 months in Thailand, north of Khao Lak, and were able to benefit from the 2-month visa exemption, renewable for one month by going to Takua Pa to validate a 1-month extension (1,900 baht). This year, it’s a disaster for us—not only were we planning a 4-month stay, adding a visa run in between (which some say is quite risky), but the law is apparently changing in the coming months with the return of the 1-month exemption (plus the usual 1-month option). So, we looked into applying for a 6-month multiple-entry visa, allowing a maximum of 60 consecutive days in Thailand. However, I can’t find anywhere the minimum time required outside Thailand between two stays—do any of you have an idea? Thanks for the info! If you’d like tips on Khao Lak and the surrounding areas, we’ve got some experience, though things change fast! Cheers, Bruno.

Hi there,
My partner, our 8-year-old daughter, and I are going on vacation to Gex.
We’ve decided to spend one day in Switzerland and another in Italy. Will we need ID (national ID card or passport)? Do we also need ID for our daughter?
Thanks so much for your answers! 🙂

Hello,
We’ll soon be moving to Madagascar long-term.
As a French national, I need to obtain a short-stay visa that can be converted to a long-stay one. To do this, I have to send the required documents to the Madagascar embassy in Paris.
No issues with that procedure so far.
If I get this visa, once I arrive in Madagascar, I’ll need to provide the same documents to the Ministry of the Interior in Anosy. I’m trying to find an email address or website for the Ministry to check which documents I need to submit (I think they ask for additional ones).
If you have any info on this, I’d appreciate your replies.
Best regards,
M. Buisson Eric
Hi there,
I’d like to know if anyone has already applied for a private visa to Russia with an invitation from a Russian resident. I traveled earlier this year with an e-visa, but since I want to stay longer, I’ll be visiting my friend who lives in eastern Russia. For the visa application, does the invitation need to be on an official paper form issued by the Russian ministry? And most importantly, do I need to present the original for the application, or is there an electronic version that can be sent directly to the consulate in France? Thanks for any info if you’ve gone through this process before!
Best regards,
Gilles

I filled out the B2 form to apply for a visa, created an account on Atvis to pay the visa fees and schedule a meet-up, but every time I try to pay with my Boursobank Visa 1st card, they refuse the payment with a message telling me to check my details (address), even though everything is correct. Does anyone know why this is happening, or maybe they don’t accept Visa cards? Are you aware of this?
Thanks for your feedback!

Hi,
There are rumors going around about the ETA: it must absolutely be on your smartphone in the "ETA" app.
Paper documents might not be accepted. Is this real or just a hoax? Thanks, I’m leaving in 3 weeks. My passport is good to go and my ETA is still valid for a year, but I only printed the email I received. Thanks everyone.

Hi there,
We need to apply for a B2 visa because we visited Iran in 2018. It currently costs $185, but they’re planning an additional $250 fee per person for the same visa—it’s been approved but not yet implemented. Does anyone know when this fee will take effect?
Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
In November, we're heading off on a 4-month trip. We'll be landing in China and plan to leave the country via a land border into Vietnam.
I’ve read that China may ask for proof of exit within 30 days (flight ticket or other reservation). Since we’d be leaving by land, I’m wondering how this works in practice.
Has anyone here been in this situation recently?
Did the airline ask for an exit ticket before boarding? Did Chinese authorities require proof upon arrival? Is a train/bus ticket to Vietnam sufficient? Is a cancelable or flexible reservation accepted?
Thanks for sharing your experiences! 😊

Hi there,
Just a question that’s probably been asked before (though usually the other way around for my situation :))
My wife and I are heading to the US.
On her ticket, it only has her maiden name (e.g., Martine DUPOND).
On her passport, it’s written as Martine DUPOND épouse AVRY.
No issues for travel, I hope I did the right thing with the ticket?
Then for the ESTA, is just Martine DUPOND enough, or do I need to include the "épouse AVRY" part like on the passport?
Thanks in advance!
Hi there,
I’m spending a few days in San Pedro de Atacama (Chile) and would like to cross the Argentine border to make a loop toward Salta and then return to Chile to drop off the rental car.
I’ve heard that crossing the border can be tricky!
Is it possible with a rental company’s authorization? Which company, and at what cost?
Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Best regards,
Arnale
Hi everyone,
I saw on the French Embassy in Peru’s website and the Peruvian Consulate in Paris’s site that the rule is to have a passport valid for 6 months *after the arrival date* (not the return date).
I arrive in Peru on August 13, 2019 (for about twelve days), and my passport is valid until February 16, 2020.
That’s 6 months and 3 days after my arrival date in Peru. In my opinion, I’m good to go.
But could I still be denied entry if they say I don’t cover the return date or that I’m too close to the 6-month mark?
Thanks for your feedback.

Hi there,
I read on the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs website that it’s possible to apply for a temporary driving permit in China, valid for 1 month. I’m planning to rent a car (without a driver) to explore part of the country next August, so I was wondering:
Has anyone here already gone through this process upon arrival? How long do the formalities take on the spot? Is it possible to handle these steps in advance, before arriving in China?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Hi
Has anyone been to Rwanda recently and gotten a 3-month visa on arrival easily?
Thanks
Hi there,
My departure is slowly approaching, and now that I’ve got my Russian visa sorted, I’m fine-tuning the rest of my trip to Tajikistan. Since the Tajik visa is no longer required for stays under 30 days (for French nationals), I’ll need to visit the Ministry of Interior (OVIR) to register within 10 days of entering the country. No big deal, though, since I had to go there anyway to apply for my GBAO permit. 😉 However, I’ve *seen* several reports from travelers (mostly motorized) mentioning that you need an entry permit for Kyrgyzstan, which has to be arranged in advance at the Kyrgyz Ministry (consulate?) in Dushanbe. Otherwise, you’re *stuck* at the Kyzyl-Art border (with no Wi-Fi, of course, to try and sort it out). The most recent report was from a year ago, so I’d love to know if this is still the case and if it’s indeed at the Kyrgyz Ministry (consulate?) where you need to go for this pre-authorization.
Does anyone have any recent info on this?
Thanks in advance!
Hi everyone.
I’m leaving for almost 3 months in the Philippines (11 weeks total) starting in early May.
I already have my round-trip ticket.
The problem is, I don’t have time to get a 2-month visa because the process takes nearly a month.
From what I’ve read here and there, I need a return ticket valid for less than a month when I arrive in the Philippines to prove my good faith.
After that, I can apply for a 30-day extension at the immigration office.
I’m planning to either buy a fully refundable ticket to the nearest country or a fake ticket.
For 3 months, I’ll need to extend my visa two more times before my return date to France.
My question is this:
Will immigration ask me each time I extend my visa by one month to show proof of an exit ticket matching the new visa extension date?
Is it possible to extend directly by 2 months before the initial 30 days expire?
Thanks in advance for your experiences and tips! 😊
Hello to all the Thailand regulars.
I’ve been to Thailand several times, but it was about 20 years ago…
There’s a new system in place now, it seems.
TDAC – Thailand Digital Arrival Card.
Before arriving, I apply for a TDAC, okay. If during my stay I cross the border to spend a few days in Malaysia and then re-enter Thailand, do I need to submit a new TDAC application? Do I use the same TDAC as when I first entered the country?
Or do I initially have to pay for a Thai multi-entry visa?
Thanks in advance for your insights—I can’t find the answer online.

My partner (Mexican) entered France on January 21st as a tourist. She was therefore entitled to stay for 90 days in the Schengen Area. She’ll be leaving for Mexico on April 16th, so she’ll have “used up” 86 days.
She plans to return to France on July 18th. According to the European Commission’s Schengen calculator, this new stay “may be authorized for a maximum of 90 days.” That’s not very clear ("may be," "for a maximum of").
The text of Article 6 of the European regulation (2016/399) states that for a stay planned in the territory of the Member States, not exceeding 90 days in any 180-day period, one must examine "the 180-day period preceding each day of the stay." That’s not very clear either.
My partner wants to return to France for a 90-day period starting on July 18th. Is this possible?
There are two ways to look at it:
1) The first day she spent in the Schengen Area was January 21st. That day will drop out of the calculation 180 days later, on July 20th.
From July 20th, she’ll get back 1 day of possible stay; on July 22nd, 2 days; and so on. All the days from her previous stay (January 21st–April 16th) need to be outside the 180-day rolling window. The last day of her stay was April 16th. Looking 180 days ahead, that brings us to October 13th. From that date, she’ll be able to return for a full 90 days. 2) The number of allowed days is calculated for each day of the new stay. In other words: the 180-day window is recalculated every day, not fixed at the entry date. If she re-enters France on July 18th, she’ll only have a “credit” of 4 days. But with each day of her new stay, one day from the previous stay (January–April) will drop out of the calculation. The rolling window allows her to “replace” days from the previous stay with those of the new stay, without ever exceeding 90 days in any 180-day period. In this case, my partner could stay in France for 90 days starting on July 18th. The Prefecture doesn’t provide any information, nor does Air France, and in the forums I’ve checked, opinions are divided. Thanks for any insights you can share!

Hello,
We’re planning to travel to Indonesia (Sulawesi with family) next July and August for a stay longer than a month (about 6 weeks).
I’ve seen that it’s possible to get a 60-day visa before departure, but I’ve also read about people having a lot of trouble getting it (some even didn’t manage and had to leave without it).
We absolutely need to have these 4 visas BEFORE leaving because once we’re in Sulawesi, I’m not sure we’ll be able to go to an embassy to request a visa extension after 30 days.
In short, how can we **100% guarantee** that we’ll get our 4 60-day visas before our trip this summer?
Thanks for your valuable tips!
Elodie

Hi there,
I’m leaving for Japan in a few weeks. I just noticed my passport has an ink stain on the signature page. Could this cause any issues?

Hello, HAPPY NEW YEAR 2026!
We’re heading back in October for a trip through Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
I have a question: for our route, we’ll need to cross the Zambia and Zimbabwe borders twice each. From experience, I know we won’t have any issues with Botswana.
But for the other two countries, I can’t find a clear answer.
All your tips are welcome!

Hi everyone!
I’m currently a student on a gap year, and I don’t plan to go back to school right away. That said, traveling really interests me. But I’ve been wondering: does being a student come with any perks when you decide to go abroad? The real question is whether I should re-enroll in a program just to keep that status without actually attending.
Thanks in advance for your replies,
Axel

hi everyone,
I’m French and live in France, and my Thai girlfriend just told me she’s pregnant—she lives in Thailand. First step, a paternity test to set my mind at ease. What steps do I need to take to recognize the child? Can I do it before the birth or only after? Where do I need to go, and what paperwork is required?
Just to clarify, I want him to stay in Thailand but be able to come to France anytime without any issues! Thanks for taking the time to read and reply.
