Hi everyone, I need your help! We’re planning to visit Guadeloupe and take the opportunity to explore the islands La Désirade, Marie-Galante, and Les Saintes. I initially planned to rent a car to get around the main island and then take the ferry from Trois-Rivières to Les Saintes, from Pointe-à-Pitre to Marie-Galante, and finally from Saint-François to La Désirade, following that route. But when I look at it, the car would sit unused for at least 5 days—that’s paying for nothing🙁. Is it possible to go from LES SAINTES to MARIE-GALANTE and then on to LA DÉSIRADE? We’d only rent a car once we arrive in Saint-François to continue exploring Guadeloupe. What do you think—is that doable? This trip is planned for April. Thanks so much for your help

Hi there!

So, you’re arriving in Guadeloupe, renting a car, and want to visit the islands.

On Les Saintes, cars aren’t allowed. On Marie-Galante, it’s best to rent locally. And on La Désirade, you don’t need a car. By the way, there’s a company that rents parking for 5 € per day in Trois-Rivières.

For Les Saintes to Marie-Galante, I don’t see any direct ferry options, but you should look into it! I’m not sure there’s a crossing from Marie-Galante to La Désirade.

How much time are you planning to spend on each island?

Here’s my take:

Les Saintes: one or two days Marie-Galante: one to three days max La Désirade: one day, no more.

Hi there,

It all depends on how much time you’ll spend in Guadeloupe: - In Les Saintes, there’s Terre de Haut and Terre de Bas—plan for a full day per island. - Marie-Galante is 150 km², so you’ll need at least 2 days (accounting for crossing time + picking up/dropping off your rental car / since the return ferry leaves at 4:00 PM, you’d have very little time in a single day). - La Désirade, the oldest island in the Caribbean, also deserves more than a day with all there is to see. However, you can take a small taxi plane from Saint-François aerodrome to save time. If the weather’s nice, the flight offers stunning views, especially of Pointe des Châteaux.

If your trip is, say, 2 weeks long, you’ll have to make choices since there are also amazing things to discover on the "Butterfly Island."

Have a great trip!

Thanks so much for this feedback! The ferry company got back to me about doing all three.
