Hi there! I’m planning to go to Zambia soon. No visa needed for stays under 90 days—that’s great! When I arrive at the airport, what’s the best option for exchanging money? Are there any public transport options to get into the city? Otherwise, can anyone recommend a cheap guesthouse in town? Thanks! Dom

Hi there, My experience in this country is from about a dozen years ago, but since you haven’t gotten any replies, I thought it might still be helpful.

I don’t remember much about exchanging money at Lusaka Airport. I probably exchanged a small amount—just enough to get into town. I took a taxi and stayed at Kalulu Backpackers. With my little tent, it cost next to nothing.

Otherwise, there are buses that connect all the cities—they’re comfortable. Hitchhiking works well too, and there are shared taxis (taxicos).

In town, you’ll find decent hotels at good prices, plus plenty of guesthouses where you can rent a room or pitch your tent.

Wow, 12 years—basically an eternity! Since COVID, everything’s changed everywhere. In this case, Lusaka Backpackers is closed, and I don’t have a tent. Hotels are expensive, and the backpacker spots aren’t great.
