Nous aimerions partir entre 15 et 20 jours (plutot 20), en aout, et faire un petit road trip autour de l'ile.
J'ai donc, pour commencer, quelques questions de bases (et classiques) :
a votre avis quel budget faut il compter ? les guides semblent dire qu'on peut improviser niveau hotel et trouver le jour meme. Qu'en pensez vous ? Est il preferable de reserver de Paris ? pour cette destination avez vous un tour operateur préféré ? ou un spécialisé ? si on veut faire l etour de l'ile on loue une voiture, ou on suit, la encore les guides, en prenant une voiture avec chauffeur ? Et est ce possible pour un road trip enfin quel itineraire preconisez vous pour cette periode

pour moi, AMED est aussi un endroit ideal et magnifique -
beaucoup, beaucoup de petits villages, de temples, des rizières etc............

Oui, je pense. Y suis allée il ya 3 ans . Avais réservé à l'avance une voiture avec chauffeur, pour faire le tour de l'ile. Ce n"aurait point éte necessaire. Dès le premier soir, au à Sanur, au restau Ming( franco chinois) que nous adorons, on nous faisait plusieurs suggestions et propositions.
Pourl ' hotellerie, toutes les gammes sont possibles.
L' intérieur de l' ile est ravissant et j'envisage d'y retourner, en Aout, si j"arrive à le combiner avc Borneo en fin de séjour. Denpasar est à 2 h de vol de Darwin, mais vu le prix de tous ces billets.
Des chauffeurs ?
oui bien entendu que tu vas en trouver qui t'ameneront partout, mais en as tu vraiment besoin .... les transports en commun sont assez pratiques, peu cher et te deposent quasiment aprtout sauf peut etre dans les parcs de l'ouest de l'ile ...
Maintenant, ce qu'on pense de Bali ? enfin moi, c'est une ile formidable, ne te laisses pas emporter par la premiere impression lorsque tu descends de l'avion et que tu arrives dans ce "bordel" bruyant, sale et tout et tout qu'est ....l'arrivee a Bali, le rest de l'ile merite amplement une visite, par contre avec le peu de temps que vous disposez, c'est sur que tu seras oblige de faire des choix.
La culture est ici encore bien presente et un peu comme la Thailande, il ya ce que tout le monde voit en arrivant et puis il y a ce qui existe derriere et ca, ca n'est pas pret de disparaitre !!

en fait on voulait faire un petit "road trip" avec ma femme. En contournant toute l'ile et en nous arretant a chaque fois dans une ville differente.
Est ce faisable ? Ou finalement preconisez vous de revenir a chaque fois a denpasar par exemple, et a chaque fois partir dans un coin de l'ile comme une excursion ?
Si jeveux faire par exemple : denpasar > amed. Je peux prendre un chauffeur, ca OK.
Mais si je veux poursuivre vers le nord en longeant la cote ? Suis je sur de trouver un chauffeur de Amed, vers une autre ville ? Et ainsi de suite.

Il vaut mieux changer d' hotel et faire un circuit. Pour le chauffeur, vous pouvez negocier avac celui que vous prenez initialement. Sur ubud vous y dormez, lui, en fonction de son domicile rentrechez lui, vous reprend le lendemain, vous gardez le même chauffeur ou il vous adresse à un collègue . ON doit puvoir trouver sur place dans les hotels, amis ne l' ayant point fait, je ne l'affirme pas . Nous avons rencontré des gens qui n'ont eu aucune difficulte dans leurs étapes
vous pensez donc qu'on peut garder le meme chauffeur pendant pratiquement 20 jours pour faire le tour de l'ille.. quite a ce qu'il se passe un relais entre les chauffeurs ?

Les guides donnent des "adresses". pour les "ballades" comment vous vous etes repérés ? Comment repérez vous les rues nommées dans les plans mais certainement ecrites autrement la bas ? Bref c'ets notre premier voyage en Asie donc pardonnez ces questions stupides :) Et les habitants parlent ils anglais ?😊

Tout est ecrit en Anglais et les Balinais font un maximum d' efforts pour nous comprendre. IL exisre des guides francophones, des chauffeurs aussi mais moins nombreux. Si vous passez par Sanur, Ming ou sa famille vous en indiqueront. Nous en avins eu plusieurs chauffeurs, plusieurs guides differents( cela changeait souvent) dont un tres interessant mais je ne retrouve pas les coordonnées de ce dernier.

Naivement nous pensions commencer pas longer l'ile sur la cote de denpasar par l'est : sanur / padangbai /amed / Kubutambahan /lovina /pemuteran / labuhan lalang / Prapat agung / cekik / taman nasional / pura rambut siwi / lalang linggah /
puis aller au centre pour les volcans / ubud / seminyak / kuta
je donne les villes un peu aux hasards pour vous donner une idée. Mais je suis tout a fait a l'ecoute de vos remarques et conseils :)
je ne sais pas encore si il est preferable pour chaque deplacement de changer d'hotel, ou si on fait des haltes de 3 ou 4 jours dans un hotel avec chaque jour des deplacement dans un rayons de 30 a 100 Km, puis on bouge ensuite vraiment a 100/150 km de la ou nous sommes pour nous poser de nouveau 3 ou 4 jours dans un hotel.
. Nous avions egalement commencé par l'Est . Etions partis de Sanur, Direction UBud ( artisans, multi disciplinaires avec ateliers tout au long de la route) puis Candidasa, d'ou nous avions rayonné. continuation par Ahmet, puis lovina avec des incursions à l'intérieur pour visites de temples, régions magnifiques de rizières, puis le Nord LOvina avant de redescendre vers le sud Kutah, Jimbaran etc;; Les temples, notamment Besakih, en periode de fete sont superbes.
Il vaut mieux je pense ne pas changer d'hôtel tous les jours, passer 3, 4 jrs à un endroit et rayonner à partir de ce lieu et en profiter aussi
Si tu ne vas pas a Kuta, tu n'auras rien, mais alors vraiment rien perdu.
Idem pour Seminyak qui depuis ces 2 dernieres annees, helas, n'est plus d'un grand interet (constuctions d'hotels, spas, discotheques et resorts a gogo).

a 1H30 de bateau =depart sanur vous pouvez allez à nusa lembongan, île de ramasseurs d'algues, super calme trés agréable - pas mal de guest house
rester plusieurs jours dans le meme hebergement et rayonner autour, tres facile à chaque étape de trouver un moyen de deplacement- motor bike ou voiture !!
Oui, as tu une idée des liaisons possibles, d' ici à ce que j'envisage Austalie du nord, bali à la place de Bornéo, bali ..., mais je trouve qu' il n'est pas toujours facile de faire des combinés de ce registre. Merci

pour le périple Java, Bali, jusqu'à Maumère et retour ds les mêmes conditions, cela m'a pris 6 semaines, mais j'aime vivre au rythme Indonésien (manger qd j'ai faim, dormir qd je veux) 😉
ainsi ayant le temps il m'arrive très souvent de rester bcp de temps ds un lieu où je suis bien : j'aime regarder les gens vivre ! ainsi à Bali je suis allée souvent dans des guests tenues par des familles et ainsi ai-je goûté à leur vie au quotidien 🙂

Mais dans notre cas le but n'est pas nécessairement d'avoir un itineraire precis minute par minute, sinon on prend une solution clé en main et "on suit le guide".
Maintenant je n'ai ni l'envie, ni le temperament, ni l'énergie de partir a l'improviste avec un sac a dos et en improvisant. J'ai vraiment autre chose a faire le matin que de me demander si je vais a droite ou a gauche, si je vais rater tel point ou tel point. Je sais que ca surprend ici ou l'approche generale est plutot : camping ou proche de la nature et des habitants, avec improvisation et immersion avec la population locale. Je l'ai fait, et c'est très louable, mais il faut aussi accepter que ce type de voyage peut s'associer avec des vacances. C'est a dire aussi du repos et une certaine tranquilité d'esprit.
Donc nous préférons un equilibre entre une reflexion préalable autour d'un itineraire, pour fixer les bases et avoir une idée de la répartition des lieux a voir par rapport au nombre de jours sur place. Mais sans rien réserver pour justement laisser part a l'improvisation.
Nous avons tous des trains de vie differents et des approches du voyage tres different.
Je dis ca avec le sourire, et encire une fois je prends tous les avis avec interet en vous remerciant vraiment pour votre aide. Mais il me semble des le debut avoir dit que le trip sac a dos / improvisation n'etait pas au programme.
Bali c'est super...dans la plupart des hotels tu peux reserver 2 jours à l'avance les excursions qui t'intéresse ...et ainsi rester indépendant et choisir suivant tes envies...
Les tours peuvent regrouper de 4 à.... plusieurs personnes.
C'est égal dans quel sens tu aborde l'ile...le tour des temples, artisanats, volcan et surtout de fameux spectacles...de jour et de nuit !
Moi, j'ai même revétu le costume traditionnel pour de superbes photos
L'ile vit bcp la nuit ...il n'est pas rare de voir des familles entiéres s'affairer autour de leur maison la nuit !
Il y a tant à voir et à faire que vous serez tjrs occupés...
la baignade sera régie par les marrées ;)

I didn’t plan to return to Thailand this year, but my health conditions mean it’ll be the best place for me to stay between two trips to India. The tourism setup there is so well-organized that it’s the most "comfortable" country for a short visit. Thailand feels too sanitized for my taste, and there’s too much religion, Buddha, and the King, but it’s still the best option given how my health has been evolving. I’d considered two weeks in ThaTon for hiking, but I got too sick from the burn-offs during my trips to the mountains around Chiang Rai. So I’m not sure where to go this year. Definitely not the sea, touristy spots, or the mountains with burn-offs...

In 1996, we crossed Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike—Minsk bikes we bought in Saigon. I haven’t been back since, and it seems like a lot has changed.
- We’re heading to the south (well, the north and center) with the family in July-August (3 people).
- Is the road network more developed now? Back then, there was only National Route 1 from south to north. I’m thinking of renting a car this time (no motorbike with the family—though in ’96, they had a Jawa sidecar for sale, and we hesitated… maybe it’s for the best).
- Is Halong Bay really something to avoid because of overtourism? Even back then, it was pretty crowded. Is there a less touristy alternative?
- We’ll be traveling from Hanoi down to Danang (the only city we didn’t stop in back in ’96). Even though it’s a bit overhyped in a Chinese-tourist kind of way (from what I’ve read), we’re only going for the beach—pure relaxation for 7 days. The beaches are stunning, and I know the South China Sea is warm like coffee.
- Then, we’ll visit Hoi An, where I stopped in ’96. It was already popular with backpackers back then, but no glowing boats or all the touristy fuss!
- After that, Hue, where I have great memories—it’s a beautiful city.
- And also the nature around Ninh Binh, followed by 2-3 days in Hanoi.
That’s the plan. I’d love to hear any tips to avoid mass tourism, and if anyone’s done this before:
- Is it possible to rent a car in Danang and drop it off in Hanoi?

I’m struggling to wrap up the end of my itinerary, even though it’s pretty straightforward (long but simple).
Last year, we did Malaysia (KL and the mainland + around Kuching).
Day 1 – Arrive in Kota Kinabalu early, stroll around town and hit the must-sees.
Day 2 – Excursion to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, snorkeling at 3 islands.
Day 3 – Hike around Mount Kinabalu without summiting (450 per person, no way).
Day 4 – Poring Hot Springs + evening flight to Sandakan.
Day 5-6-7 – Kinabatangan River (still looking for the right guide).
Day 8 – Sepilok for the orangutans, the Sun Bear Centre, and Rainforest Discovery Centre.
Day 9 – Selingan, turtle island.
Day 10 – Head to Semporna.
Day 11-12-13-14 – Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai.
Day 15 – Bohey Dulang.
Day 16 to Day 25: I’M STUCK.
I looked into Danum Valley, but for 3 days/2 nights, they’re quoting 650 € per person—come on, that’s ridiculous.
I checked out a detour into Indonesia (still East Borneo), but I’m having trouble deciding what would be amazing.
I read about Sangalaki + Kakaban (2 islands, 1 base) / Mahakam Delta - Kutai (orangutans and river) / Sungai Boh (Dayak Kayan) – jungle & culture.
But honestly, I’m struggling to finalize this itinerary.
If we venture that way, we’d head back to KK from Balikpapan.
For a 4-month stay in Egypt, I had ENORMOUS problems. The regulations are very bureaucratic and extremely nitpicky there. For a 4-month stay in the Philippines, I was wondering if the procedures are just as complicated? I’m bringing my cell phone with an eSIM. Should I choose a plan from Canada for use in the Philippines, or should I get a plan only once I arrive? After 30 days, do I renew with the Canadian provider I chose before leaving, or do I switch to a local company? Do I need to register my phone with the authorities in the Philippines? (That was the case in Egypt.) For the 3rd and 4th months, will it be just as simple—renewing with a Canadian or local provider—or should I expect problems?

We’re heading to Vietnam as a family on July 8th for a little over 3 weeks (north and center). We’ve only booked the first 3 nights in Hanoi, and nothing else after that. We like to decide things on the spot and go with the flow, without rushing everywhere. But I’m still a bit unsure: when heading down to the center (Hue), is it better to book the overnight trains in advance? We don’t want to take any flights while we’re there—just use the overnight train for the long trips. But I’m worried we won’t get seats if we buy the tickets on the spot, say, 2 days before. I’d love to get some feedback on our itinerary—it’s probably pretty basic! This is our second trip to Asia and our first to Indonesia. We have three kids aged 20, 18, and 12. We land in Jakarta at 4 PM, spend 3 nights/2 days there, then take the train to Yogyakarta for 3 nights/2 days, followed by the train to Surabaya for 2 nights/1 day, then the train to Bromo for 1 day/1 night, a private driver to Ijen for 2 nights/2 days, then on to Bali (Ubud) for 4 nights/3 days, followed by Gili Air for 3 nights/2 days, Senggigi (Lombok) for 2 nights, and finally 5 nights in Kuta. I’m considering cutting the 2 nights in Senggigi to just keep Kuta and extend it to 7 nights. In Lombok, I’m not sure how to get around since I’m not comfortable with scooters... Your thoughts on all of this, and any advice, are more than welcome—don’t hesitate!
For those wondering why cities like Jakarta and Surabaya: we don’t often get the chance to visit big Asian cities, so we wanted to include that discovery in our trip. The trains between Jakarta and Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Probolinggo are booked. The return flight from Lombok to Jakarta is also set. Accommodations are booked but flexible (same for the trains).

My girlfriend and I booked our tickets with Saudia Airlines for a trip to Thailand this summer, from July 5th to August 3rd. Given the geopolitical situation in the Middle East, we’re keeping a close eye on the news.

• Have you heard anything about possible mass cancellations or if the airline is still maintaining its routes to Asia?
• Are there any travelers who’ve recently returned who could tell us if air corridors have been changed (longer flight times)?

August 1–7: Tana Toraja with a guide
August 7: Tana Toraja to Tentena + visit Tentena
August 8: Early departure with a private driver to Ampana, then ferry to the Togian Islands
August 9–15: Togian Islands (2 different resorts)
August 15: Depart Togian Islands for Luwuk
August 16: Flight Luwuk to Makassar
August 17: Rammang Rammang
August 18: Stroll in Makassar, then return home

I also have a question about the connection between Tentena and the Togian Islands: Is it doable to leave early in the morning as planned and still be sure not to miss the ferry?

I’m currently working on a 30-day itinerary for May/June 2027.
10 days in eastern Java (Malang, Bromo, waterfalls, Meru Beriti Park, Banyuwangi, and Ijen), a short transit in Ubud for a few days, then Flores before heading back to Jakarta.
We’ll spend 15 days in Flores (the classic route: Moni, Bajawa, Riung, Ruteng, ending in Labuan Bajo).
I’d love some firsthand feedback on flights to Maumere or Ende from Bali Denpasar. I know there are no direct routes and that you have to connect through Labuan Bajo or Timor (I think), which isn’t an issue in itself.
But I’ve read here and there that flights to these destinations can be delayed—or worse, canceled—and that it’s better to fly in and out of Labuan Bajo, which isn’t exactly ideal...

Family of 4—2 adults and 2 kids (11 and 15) who are well-traveled.
We’re planning a 15-day trip to Indonesia and would love your thoughts on our itinerary.
We love discovering local culture, food (!!), seeing beautiful landscapes, and keeping an active pace. We’re not the type to lounge on the beach for 5 hours or spend ages by the pool when we’re halfway across the world. Also, we try to avoid places "ruined" by mass tourism (like Holbox in Mexico, which we loved 10 years ago but not at all on our last visit, or Phi Phi in Thailand, completely destroyed by mass tourism).
Special note: we love traveling by train :)
