Dimanche 7 avril : location de voiture au centre ville (que je réserverai depuis la France chez AVIS) - prise en main de la voiture
Lundi 8 avril : route de San Francisco à Monterey. Nuit à Monterey
Mardi 9 avril : aquarium de Monterey et balade historique. Nuit à Monterey
Mercredi 10 avril : Visite de la mission de Carmel et de Carmel by the Sea puis route vers Point Lobos, Julia Pfeiffer State Park, Pedras Blancas. Nuit à San Siméon
Jeudi 11 avril : San Luis de Obispo, Los Alamos, nuit à Santa Barbara
Vendredi 12 Avril : plage de Venice, visite des canaux, plage de Malibu, nuit à West Hollywood
Samedi 13 avril : Balade sur Hollywood Boulevard, Rodéo Drive. Nuit à West Hollywood.
Dimanche 14 avril : route pour Long Beach : visite du Queen Mary puis route pour San Diego. Nuit à San Diego
Lundi 15 avril : zoo de San Diego + balade dans la ville. Nuit à San Diego
Mardi 16 avril : Sea World + autre chose. Nuit à San Diego
Mercredi 17 avril : le matin, visite du USS Midway (que je veux absolument faire), remise de la voiture en début d'après-midi à l'aéroport. Vol de 16 h 35 pour Las Vegas.
Retour en France le Dimanche 21 avril.
Qu'en pensez-vous ? (à noter que je n'envisage pas de visiter les studios - juste des photos de l'extérieur).

San Francisco, je n'ai fait qu'y passer il y a une quinzaine d'année. Une journée, vous conviendrez que c'était vraiment trop peu. C'est pourquoi j'ai décidé d'y rester 1 semaine afin d'explorer cette ville qui m'intéresse beaucoup. Et comme j'adore l'histoire-géo et l'architecture ....
Je veux prendre mon temps sur ce circuit en faisant des petites étapes, parce que pars seule, que c'est la première fois que je vais me promener sur les routes américaines et que le doc qui m'a tiré de l'enfer me donne le feu vert pour le faire -ben oui, quand j'étais malade il y a deux ans que je voyais toutes les belles photos postées sur le forum, je me suis dit que ce serait con de claquer avant d'avoir vu tout çà ! C'est en quelque sorte un "survivor tour". Mais vous en faites pas ...
J'irai dans le Grand Canyon et à Monument Valley depuis Las Vegas avec des amis qui m'accueillent là-bas pour la troisième semaine. Et là, c'est vraiment mieux que j'aille pas seule dans le désert car j'ai une hyper phobie des bestioles qui rampent et autres. En 2011, j'ai fait un malaise à New York et poussé un cri à rendre jalouse Céline Dion après qu'un mec m'a mis son python sous le nez ....
J'aurais peut-être d'autres questions à vous poser.
Effectivement, par rapport à des tours où ça va trop vite, là tu prends ton temps ! C'est un peu ce que nous avions fait, mais nous avions passé un peu moins de temps à SF, et plus à LA.

Intérêt limité de prendre la voiture la veille juste pour une prise en main. Par contre ça peut être intéressant pour aller passer un journée aux alentours de SF (par exemple le pays des vignes, ou alors au Nord vers Point Reys en passant pas Saussalito). De là, soit tu reviens sur SF le soir et départ pour Monterey le lendemain, soit tu prends directement la route pour arriver à Monterey en fin de soirée.
Voici mon point de vue.
En general pas de problemes, mais pour l'auto a SF, le cout du stationnement dans cette ville est prohibitif. A moins que tu ne te serve de ton auto tous les jours cela te coutera trop cher.
Tu economiserais certainement en prenant le taxi de l'aeroport jusqu'a ton hotel. Tu te deplacerais alors en transport en commun, qui est tres aisé dans cette ville.
Disons, les 2 derniers jours, tu prendrais possession de ton vehicule. Tu pourrais en prendre possession sois à SF ou à Oakland, de l'autre coté du bay bridge.
Si malgré tout, tu decides d'avoir un vehicule a partir de l'aeroport ( ce que je ne ferais absolument pas), ne stationne pas ton auto dans un stationnement de l'hotel, va dans un endroit public.
Avec deux jours en auto avant de partir vers le sud, tu auras le temps de voir: Napa valley, sonoma valley, muir wood, sausalito, te promener sur lombard (tu dois a descendre en auto).
Tu n'as pas specifié, mais j'espere que tu prendra la route 1 pour aller a san diego.
Dans la region de monterey, va voir la 17 mile dr.

circuit sympa... je pense que vous pourriez aussi faire des petits ajustements comme :
- 1 nuit de plus à Santa Barbara... la nuit à San Luis Obispo n'apporte pas grand chose...
- Sur LA, vous passez à côté d'une longue ballade sur sunset, santa monica...les canyons, mulholland, le getty museum. Tout çà c'est au nord ouest de LA... en choisissant bien la position de votre hotel, c'est une belle journée complete...
- Entre LA et San Diego, deux options : option "bord de mer" : une nuit à Laguna Beach pour l'ambiance. option "désert" (si vous n'avez jamais vu le désert...) : depuis LA crochet à Palm Springs pour une nuit puis poursuite sur San Diego.

Avant d'annoncer de telles choses, il conviendrait d'aller voir les prix pratiqués (bien sûr pour les parkings publics qui sont trèèès nombreux, pas pour les parkings privés des hôtels qui d'ailleurs souvent ne possèdent pas leur propre parking mais disposent d'un valet parking qui va lui-même garer votre voiture au parking public d'à côté... On paie donc cher pour ce service rendu... Autant aller la garer soi-même😛)

Je respecte ton opinion, mais je suis allé dans cette merveilleuse ville plusieurs fois avant meme d'etre membre ici.
Je le reconfirme encore et je le dis bien haut: le prix du stationnement a SF est prohibitif, d'autant plus que l'on a pas besoin de l'auto pour visiter la ville.
Donc, si tu reste a SF pour disons 7 jours, tu auras besoins de l'auto pour disons 3 jours. Tu as alors 4 jours de location plus 4 jours de stationnement a un cout prohibitif. Sans compter que souvent la location est plus chere a l'aeroport qu'en ville. Quelquefois en plus, c'est encore moins cher a oakland.
Mais comme je te l'ai dit, tu n'a pas a etre en accord avec moi, c'est ce que je vois toutes les fois que j'y vais.
Un parking à 25 $ (soit 18 €) /24h, je n'appelle pas ça prohibitif😮
Que croyez-vs que coûte un parking à Paris, Bruxelles ou n'importe quelle autre grande ville d'Europe (même ds la petite ville wallonne où j'habite) ?
Si on se trouve en famille à SF et qu'il faut payer un pass pour prendre les bus et cable car à x $ / jour pour chacun, cela commence aussi à chiffrer... et quel perte de temps... (et puis prendre le cable car une fois, c'est marrant , mais ensuite si il faut attendre chaque fois 2h pour trouver une place de libre, ça devient lourd)
Si vs devez payer le Bart ou une navette pour vs emmener de l'aéroport au centre-ville, cela commence aussi à chiffrer... sans compter qu'il vous faut vs coltiner ts vos bagages ds les rues en pente de SF... pas très pratique...
Si vs devez louer des vélos pour chaque membre d'une famille pour aller faire un tour à Sausalito (+ le retour en bateau) , cela commence aussi à chiffrer...
Si vs participez à une excursion payante qui prévoit le tour de la ville en voiture, cela commence aussi à chiffrer...
A savoir aussi que louer une voiture 2x1 semaine plutôt que 2 semaines consécutives coûte bcp plus cher (puisque le prix est dégressif avec le nombre de jours de location) et que donc l'idée couramment répandue qu'il faut rendre la voiture qd on est à SF et en relouer une autre ensuite pour finir son parcours, n'est vraiment pas la bonne idée

Bonsoir Caussat et aux forumers qui m'ont répondu.
J'ai réservé mon hôtel à San Francisco.
La voiture, je la louerai à partir du samedi midi, à l'agence Avis de Union Square, à deux pas de l'hôtel. De là, j'irai sur Sausalito.
Le dimanche matin, je prendrai la route pour aller au parc d'attraction SIX FLAGS à Vallejo . Je rentrerai en passant par Point Reyes.
Le lendemain, départ pour Monterey par la route n°1.
Le vendredi 12 avril, je vais me débrouiller pour arriver à Santa Monica vers 10 h afin de pouvoir louer un vélo pour pousser jusqu'à Venice et Malibu. Ensuite, je me rendrai à Los Angeles en passant par l'Observatoire et Sunset boulevard.
Pour la journée à Los Angeles, je prendrai un bus hop-on hop-off avec le trajet que m'intéresse.
Le dimanche matin, départ pour Long Beach pour bruncher à bord du Queen Mary et visiter le navire.
Ensuite, descente tranquille sur San Diego.
A propos : auriez-vous une idée du temps de visite à consacrer au Midway qui ouvre à 10 h, étant donné que je dois être à l'aéroport pour 13 h (mon avion pour Vegas est à 15 h et pas à 16H30 comme je le pensais). Une chose est sure, c'est que je ne pourrai pas y passer 4 heures comme au musée de l"air et de l'espace de Washington - celui où j'ai vu la navette. J'aimerais juste monter à bord de quelques avions tant qu'il n'y a pas trop de monde. C'est pour çà aussi que je vais y aller dès l'ouverture.
PS :
1) C'est vrai qu'elle est exceptionnelle cette navette au musée de DC !!!
2) Si vous avez l'hôtel près d'Union square, une bonne adresse pour une pizza, des pates, des salades. A emporter ou sur place : Uncle Vito's à l'angle de Bush St et de Powell St. Ca paye pas de mine, mais on en salive encore 😉

J'ai posé toutes mes options pour les hôtels. Ne me reste plus que le billet d'avion et la voiture. Là, j'hésite entre HERTZ et AVIS. Je ne souhaite pas passer par Alamo, vus le nombre de problèmes rapportés ici et là au fil de mes investigations.
Pour la visite du Midway, vue l'horaire tardif d'ouverture, je pense être trop juste car je dois me rendre ensuite à l'aéroport de San Diego: or, même si l'aéroport n'en est pas très loin, je ne veux pas bâcler cette visite. Parce que en France, nous n'avons pas de tels lieux ouverts au public. Alors c'est sûre : je préfère savourer le moment et je me connais : cela devrait me prendre au minimum 3 bonnes heures ... lol
Nos vols sont réservés, 12 jours... nous sommes à faire l'itinéraire... San Francisco, Alcatraz, Napa Valley... etc. descendons Los Angeles... et de là... ça…

After that, we’re heading to Sherbrooke to visit our daughter, who’s studying at the university there. We’ll spend 3 days with her, and then, since she has a break that week, we’re taking her along for 3 days in Quebec City.
We’ve planned to visit Montmorency Falls and Île d'Orléans.
I’d love to hear what route you’d recommend for the drive from Sherbrooke to Quebec City—we’ll have the whole day to take it easy.

Classic itinerary: arrival in Calgary, Banff, Jasper, Clearwater, Whistler, Vancouver Island, departure from Vancouver.
I know you can’t see into the future any better than I can, so I’m obviously not asking what the wildfire situation will be like in a month...

A friend is renting a car for an upcoming trip during the All Saints' holiday.
Nowadays, all rental cars come with GPS, but do you know if you can use it without paying for the GPS rental? I have no idea since I always use my own!
After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

**Parking:**
We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. As you can see, we're heading back from September 6th to the 27th.
Everything’s booked for September—flights, accommodations, and the car. As I plan, I’ll be asking the experts for help. This is our second trip to California, but most of the stops are new to us.
We’ll start directly from San Francisco to our first overnight stop, Davis, before heading to Lassen Volcanic Park for 4 nights. Our flight lands at 12:50 PM.

Paradise Meadow (maybe not going all the way), Devastated Area, and the loop around Reflection and Manzanita Lakes (Day 3)
Cinder Cone and Painted Dunes (Day 4)
Devil’s Kitchen and Boiling Spring Lake (Day 5)
I’ve read there are trails to access the trailheads for Cinder Cone (11 km) and Warner Valley. Are these easy trails for an SUV?
Are there any other must-see spots or things we shouldn’t miss?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.
Thanks for advising me on the booking—should I reserve a room in the hotel or go for a cabin for the best view?

I’m planning a week-long family trip to NYC in October 2026. The focus is on museums and soaking up the New York vibe. I’ve been checking Airbnb, but the prices in Manhattan are through the roof. Since I don’t know NYC well, is it "wise" to look outside Manhattan? Any neighborhoods you’d recommend?

Just a little post that might interest some of you:

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

I’m planning a week in S.F. in April 2026 and I can’t figure out how to tell the cable cars—of which I understand there are three lines—apart from the trams, which I think number seven. I can’t find their individual numbers or routes anywhere.
