Planning a summer trip to 4 Cape Verde islands

Hello,

We’ve booked our tickets for July—there’ll be 4 of us, maybe 6 (all in our sixties). We’d like to visit 4 islands: Arrival in Praia on July 8th Return from São Vicente on July 29th

Between those dates, I’m not sure how to split our time across each island. We’ll definitely spend at least a week on Santo Antão. We’re planning to visit Santiago, Fogo, São Vicente, and Santo Antão. We’re looking for easy hikes, diving, sightseeing, and a little beach time (but not too much). How do you think we should divide the 3 weeks among the islands? Is 3 days in Fogo enough? Are guides essential, and can we easily find them on the spot? Should we rent a car, given we won’t just be hiking?

Thanks in advance for your advice, tips, warnings, and anything else you can share… and I’ve still got plenty more questions! Valéry

Hi, First thing: book a multi-city flight ticket, with your international arrival on one island (e.g., São Vicente) and your international return from another (Santiago).

Fogo? You can easily spend time there, but if it’s just for the volcano, 3 days *might* work. Though it’ll be a bit rushed—arrival day, summit day, departure day… A guide is essential (maybe even mandatory now?) for the big Pico do Fogo hike. On Santo Antão, it depends on which hikes you choose, your experience hiking solo, your navigation skills, and how you handle unexpected issues. But some hikes are unmissable… or nearly so! That said, a guide isn’t just a compass or someone who shows you the way—they add value to the experience too. Plus, they can handle everything: accommodation, transfers, meals… Marie

Hi Marie,

Thanks for your valuable feedback! For Fogo, since one person in our group has limited mobility for steep hikes, I’m not sure about doing Pico do Fogo. I’ve seen there are some nice guided walks on Fogo. We’re not looking for performance—just a relaxed walk and discovery, which is why a guide interests us. We’ve already booked multi-destination tickets—you’re right, it’s much simpler. We arrive in Praia and depart from Mindelo. Based on travel journals and blogs from the site, I’ve drafted a rough itinerary. If you’d be so kind as to take a look:

Wednesday, July 8 Arrival in Praia at noon (if all goes well) Pick up rental car for the island of Santiago .Ruivaz village (hotel for the night) Visit Ruivaz village and a walk

Thursday, July 9 Morning hike options: -Orgaos Valley 3H with a guide Afternoon: head to Tarrafal for a swim Friday, July 10 Serra Malagueta Natural Park with a guide Saturday, July 11 Diving day Sunday, July 12 Ribeira Prata short hike with a guide Cuba natural pool Monday, July 13 Los Rabelados village and return to Praia—visit Praia and stay overnight Tuesday, July 14 Flight to Fogo, stay at Cha das Caldeiras Hike around Pico Pequeno Wednesday, July 15 Fogo—island tour? Depending on the group’s feedback, stay in São Filipe Thursday, July 16 Flight to Mindelo via Praia, stay in Mindelo Since tickets aren’t on sale yet, I’ll adjust based on availability Friday, July 17 to Sunday, July 20 Explore São Vicente with a guide and one day of diving July 21 to 27 Santo Antão—program not finalized yet, but at least Paul Valley with a guide, one night, and a day of diving in Porto Novo. Afterward, stay either in Ribeira Grande or Ponto do Sol—if you’ve got a great tip, I’m all ears! July 28 Return to Mindelo July 29 Return to France Thanks for your feedback if you think this isn’t doable—we don’t want to rush and want to leave room for the unexpected. Have a great day! Valéry

Hi there, I’m replying a bit late—I was hiking with my sis for a few days on the other side of the island! ;O) For the length of stay on São Vicente, you’ll definitely need to check the flights. But I think 4 days is a lot. You can explore Mindelo in 1 day, then spend 1–2 days visiting other spots on the island, but you’ll have seen most of it pretty quickly. I don’t think you need a guide on São Vicente. I’d recommend saving that budget for Fogo, Santiago, and Santo Antão instead.

Just so you know, there are also some pretty easy hikes/walks on Santo Antão. For diving in Porto Novo, do it either when you arrive or before you leave Santo Antão since the trips are long. So take advantage of the fact that you’ll have to pass through PN anyway when arriving or departing.

I think it’s nicer to stay in Ponta do Sol than Ribeira Grande. Sure, RG is livelier and more commercial, but the seaside and town are more pleasant in Ponta do Sol. Plus, you can swim there (especially in summer when the sea is calmer). And it’s only a 10-minute drive between Ponta do Sol and RG, so it doesn’t add much time if you want to go sightseeing or hiking.

For Fogo, you can do a tour of the island to see more than just the volcano. And São Filipe is a charming little town worth exploring. I can give you the contact for a guide/driver who also runs a small family guesthouse in Chã das Caldeiras. A really lovely Cape Verdean couple (Casa Zé e Sónia). Marie

Hi Marie,

Thanks again for your invaluable feedback. I’d love to get the contact for Casa Zé e Sonia (and if you have any other nice contacts, don’t hesitate). We’re planning to book accommodations at the very start of the year, so it’s even more interesting if there’s a guide option available. For diving, I’ll schedule it at the beginning of our visit to Santo Antão, otherwise we’ll be too close to the return flight—you need to wait at least 24 to 48 hours after diving before flying. Do you think, given our timing, it’s worth spending a night in Tarrafal (I’m considering renting a car for at least part of the week)? Ponto do Sol does seem to fit our plans better, and I’m thinking maybe we could spend a night in the Paul Valley. I found one of your posts on another forum (Le Routard, I think) where you listed easy hikes—I’ve noted them down. A thousand thanks for your advice; I’m really excited to discover Cape Verde. Have a wonderful evening!

Hi there, Casa Zé e Sonia (Portela): Zé’s number is 00238.988 53 26 (he speaks French really well). Otherwise, I think they’re even listed on Booking.com.

For Tarrafal: given the distance and the drive time (about 2 hours from Porto Novo), I think one night might be a bit short. But if you’re renting a car and can set your own schedule, then why not? Though it’s still quite a drive. Marie

Hi there,

Thanks for your feedback. I’ll keep Zé’s contact info and won’t hesitate to reach out once I’ve booked the accommodations. For Taffaral, I’m still on the fence—with just 2 days, I think there’s more to see on the east coast, and I’m really wondering if renting a car is worth it just to get to Taffaral. But there’s so much to see and do... Three weeks feels short. Just out of curiosity, could you give me a rough idea of the cost for a vehicle with a driver-guide for the day? For now, the only flights between Praia and São Vicente are on Sundays. Do you think there might be other days available in July? (I’d really rather not take the ferries.) Have a great week!

Renting a car on Santo Antão isn’t necessarily the best idea. It really depends on what you want to do there. If it’s for hikes, most aren’t loop trails, so it’s tricky with a car. The easiest option is to get dropped off at the start and picked up at the end (or take a shared taxi when possible). Even for Tarrafal, you can get there by shared taxi, but in that case, you’d need to spend at least 2-3 nights there. That said, it’s not the first thing to see on Santo Antão, in my opinion. It’s hard to give an exact price for a day with a driver-guide since it depends on the tour. But for a good island tour (without Tarrafal), you should budget around 120-140 €. It’s more like 80-100 € if you skip the west side (so no Ribeira das Patas, Alto Mira, Ribeira da Cruz, etc.). There are usually Praia-São Vicente flights almost every day. It’s odd that you’re only seeing Sundays (on the Cabo Verde Airlines site?). But to be fair, things are a bit chaotic right now... Marie

Hi Marie

Thanks for your feedback. I think we’ll skip Tarrafal and spend a bit more time on the eastern part of the island. For domestic flights, I checked the Cape Verde Airlines website, and for now, it only shows flights on Sundays. But if I look back at March and April, there are almost daily flights. I’ll wait until the start of the year—maybe the schedules will be more up to date by then. Anyway, thanks so much for your help putting our trip together; it’s been really valuable. Maybe we’ll run into each other again sometime. I might reach out if I have any last-minute questions. Have a great day!
