Parking and Viewpoints for Lake Tahoe Visits

Good evening, everyone! 🙂 Just a few last questions to wrap up our Lake Tahoe visit plans.

**Parking:** We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?

**Viewpoints on the East Side:** Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?

**Donner Memorial State Park:** Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

Thanks in advance for your tips! 🙂

Hi there, I haven’t kept up with this destination regularly for several months, so I missed some posts. I visited this area in 2019 (see my travel journal "Californiah Nevadah Utah Ah"). I arrived in Carson City on day 18 of the journal. I spent about a week around Carson City and further south in California, east of the Sierra Nevada. You might still find some useful info there if you take a look.

For your specific question, I stayed on the east shore of Lake Tahoe, so I don’t know anything about Emerald Bay.

On this east shore, I remember there were traffic restrictions planned for peak season on Route 48 toward Sand Harbour State Park (I don’t recall the exact details, since I was there in early June, before the restrictions were in place). There was plenty of space in the State Park parking lot.

For viewpoints and small accessible coves (Bonsai Rock is probably one of them), there were only a few spots along the roadside (early June, given the announced restrictions??? and this was back in 2019).

Hope this helps...

Good evening! 🙂 Thanks for your post, Michel—that’s cool. I’ll go check out your travel journal. We’ll be there in mid-September, so we might be lucky enough to avoid road closures too. Have a great rest of the afternoon! Marcalamar 🙂
