Hi there!

I’m heading to Vietnam and Laos with a buddy next week for a month. We’re thinking of renting motorbikes, especially to do the Ha Giang Loop. We don’t have an international license, just our Belgian one. Is that enough? If not, is it risky?

Thanks for the info! !

Hey, For Vietnam, I regularly rent scooters when I visit a region other than where I live, and I’ve never been asked for my Vietnamese license—but I do have one. You shouldn’t have any issues renting one, but what about in case of an accident? Your travel insurance or anything else definitely won’t cover you.

I also rented a scooter in Vientiane for 2 days a while back, no international license required.

Up to you!

Hi,

So, to be clear, is riding a motorbike with a foreign license illegal?

In most countries, the rental company doesn’t bother checking if you have a license recognized by local authorities—they just take your money for the rental. If you get pulled over by the police with the wrong license, you’ll pay a fine. If you have an accident, you’re never covered by insurance if your license isn’t locally recognized. In that case, foreigners quickly become cash cows, facing lawsuits, jail time... depending on the severity and local customs... You’ll always find people who’ve rented without a license at their own risk. In Vietnam, you need an international permit, which varies depending on the engine size of the two-wheeler. You can find all the info online, including the process for converting your license to a Vietnamese one. The roads aren’t poorly maintained, but heavy rain often causes landslides and road collapses. Caution is advised. Safe travels... and good luck—it was already chaotic on the Ha Giang loop seven years ago, with lots of Vietnamese riding motorbikes.
