Hello,

We’re planning to spend two full days in Phnom Penh next January.

We really love markets, and I’d love to know which one you think is the most interesting in the capital? The Central Market (Psar Thmei) and the Russian Market are often mentioned.

Thanks in advance for your tips. Have a great day,

Hello,

Like in many other Southeast Asian capitals, the most interesting markets are often the ones you stumble upon by chance and that only locals know about. But you can also ask your moto-dop driver to take you to one, making sure to insist that you don’t want to go to the Central Market or the Russian Market—he’ll know where to find the small neighborhood markets.

*"Your" because it’s often the same driver who "takes care of you" during your stay. After a short time, he knows all your habits: whether you’re an early riser or not to be there when you leave your hotel, the sites you haven’t visited yet, your favorite eateries and hangouts, etc.

The Central Market is worth a quick look, both for its exterior and interior, and the building is a bit photogenic thanks to its architecture and its massive ochre-colored structure. The Russian Market sells a bit of everything. At one point, it was the place to go for pirated DVDs and software of varying quality for $1, but that’s probably over now. It’s still worth a quick visit, and it’s not far from Tuol Sleng, the genocide museum, which should be a must-see.

If you have any food market photos when you get back, you can post them in this thread for market lovers: https://voyageforum.com/forum/marches-c-ur-vivant-gastronomie-cuisine-locale-d11486036/ Or even now, since I see you’ve already been to quite a few Southeast Asian countries.

Hi there, and thanks for your tips!

It's true that small markets often lead to great discoveries, but some big markets (not all) can be interesting too.

We’d planned to visit the genocide museum ;-)

I’ll try to add my two cents to the post about Southeast Asian markets ;-)
