Comme indiqué dans le sujet "road trip de 3 semaines en août 2015" ouvert par Eric, je vous soumets mon planning de ma visite de San Francisco.
Nous sommes 4 : 2 adultes, 2 garçons de 10 et 12 ans et arrivons à SF le lundi 24 Août en milieu d'après-midi (je pense).
Il est actuellement prévu de rendre notre voiture de location le 26 avant 13h, mais si besoin, je peux rallonger la durée de location.
Dans un premier temps, voici ce que j'ai prévu durant les 2 premiers jours, donc avec voiture (Alex, j'ai bien pris en compte vos propositions qui me paraissent vraiment super - jamais je n'aurais trouvé ces lieux). N'hésitez pas à me donner des précisions s'il peut être compliqué de trouver un point d’intérêt, ou pour se garer, ou bien si j'ai prévu trop de choses (ce qui est fort possible).
Lundi 24 Août : Check out au Housekeeping Camp (Yosemite)

Route pour SF avec un passage au Bass Pro Shop
Déjeuner au Billie Hills Hillbilee BBQ à Manteca
Arrivée à SF au Baldwin Hotel - 321 Grant Ave
Selon l'heure d'arrivée, option pour des ballades proches de notre hôtel : Union Square / Nob Hill / Chinatown (je me suis pas mal documentée sur ces petits parcours, donc je n'ai pas trop d'inquiétude ni de question)
En fin de journée, prendre la voiture pour aller se ballader à Baker Beach (se garer Parking China Beach – 464 Sea Cliff Ave – Free)
Avez-vous des propositions pour un diner (rapide) proche Baker Beach ? Je n'ai absolument rien trouvé sur Tripadvisor.
(étape mal préparée, je ne suis pas très à l'aise pour ce jour)
Passer par Lombard Street depuis Hyde, puis Traversez le Golden Gate Bridge.
J'ai lu qu'il fallait payer le passage au GGB avant (par Internet par exemple) : y a-t-il nécessité d'imprimer un document ?
Vista point : Puis Reprenez votre voiture, quittez la 101 et suivez la direction "Golden Gate Recreation Area". Vous monterez alors dans les hauteurs, sur la Conzelman Road, superbe route panoramique, et aurez des vues tout à fait spectaculaires sur le Golden Gate Bridge.(ça, ca ne vient pas de moi !😊)
Autre point de vue : sortez tout de suite sur Alexander Ave. Descendre Alexander Ave et tourner à droite sur la première route à droite Bay Area Discovery Museum. Continuer jusqu’en bas et tourner à gauche dans le parking et aller jusqu’au bout de la route. Un endroit est aménagé pour prendre des photos. C’est un des meilleurs endroits pour des photos du GGB et d’Alcatraz.(et ça non plus 😊)
Sausalito :est-ce incontournable ?
Marin City avec House-Boats: difficile à trouver ??

Puis retour à l’hôtel OU ATT Park : est-il plus simple d'aller et revenir à pieds à l'ATT Park ? ou bien y aller en voiture ? J'ai vu qu'il y avait des parking pas très loins (Parking de l'ATT C North), mais aucune idée du prix.
19h15 - Le soir, match de baseball au ATT Park - Chicago Clus at San Francisco Giants
Si cette journée est trop chargée, il sera possible de faire ce qui n'a pas été fait le lendemain matin. Je manque d'informations pour cette journée, et ne suis pas certaine de pouvoir y consacrer le temps de préparation nécessaire. Mercredi 26 Août : Faire ce qui n'a pas été fait hier, puis rentre le véhicule à l'agence Avis (675 Post Street, Union Square) , puis :
- Prendre la Market Street jusqu'au Ferry Building : cette ballade est-elle vraiment intéressante ? Sinon, je change mon lieu de restitution de véhicule et choisis l'agence Avis au Hyatt Regency Embarcadero (5 Embarcadero Center) ce qui nous évitera de prendre un transport en commun.
- Louer des vélos (réservés au préalable sur le Net pour bénéficier de 20% de discount) à San Francisco Bicycle Rentals - Ferry Building Bike Rentals - 1 Sausalito (4 min à pied de l'agence Avis) / 4 antivols + paniers à demander
- Ballade en vélo : Pier 7, Pier 39, Musee Mécanique, Palace of Fine Art, For Point, Golden Gate Park - Bison Paddok, Japanese Tea Garden, Hall of Flowers.
- Rendre les vélos au SF Bike Rental - Golden Gate Tours&Bike Rentals - 1816 Haight Street
- Revenir à Union Square à pieds, en passant par : Haight Ashbury, Painted Ladies, City All, Alamo Square
- Concert à Union Square de 18 à 20h - 333 Post Street - NItecaps Blues Band (aucune idée de ce à quoi s'attendre 😕)
Notre hôtel ne proposant pas de petit-déjeuners, avez vous des adresses sympas pour notre breakfast ??? et les repas midi et soir également ?
Jeudi 27 Août :Rien ne va plus ! J'ai beau retourner dans tous les sens, je ne trouve pas comment organiser cette dernière journée complète.
Alex : Oui, pourquoi pas faire le Walt Disney Family Museum (j'ai vu qu'il n'y avait pas d'audio tour en français - ce musée est-il donc vraiment accessible à mes enfants ? L'entrée étant assez onéreuse, j'aimerai être un peu rassurée).
J'avais envisagé de faire le matin : Chinatown puis Russian Hills (petit retour sur Lombard à pied cette fois) avec retour à l’hôtel en cable car (départ de Hyde St & North Point St - Arrêt à la station SUTTER /3 min de l’hôtel) OU en bus ligne 30 Stockton (départ North Point St - arrêt à Geary St) mais avec une nette préférence au cable car que nous souhaitons prendre 1 fois durant ce séjour.
et l'AM : Financial District / Gold Rush / North Beach / Columbus / Telegraph Hill / Coit pour se rapprocher ainsi du Pier 33 pour notre Night Tour Alcatraz réservé pour un départ de 18h30
Comment faire pour que tout cela rentre dans une journée ? !?😕

Comment rejoindre l'aéroport de l’hôtel ? navette de l'hotel, taxi , BART ?
Autrement, perso j'aurais gardé la voiture jusqu'au bout du voyage . C'est pratique pour silloner SF, et aller au GG park.
Attention au velo à SF si vs ns dites avoir des problemes. SF est tres valloné. J'ai rencontré des français qui son allé de leur hotel au Golden gate Park, et qui sont arivés completemen extenués car pas habitués à en faire.

Concernant la location de voiture, je vais encore y réfléchir une fois le planning finalisé.
La plus-value serait de 103€ + le parking et nous ferait certes économiser les frais pour nous rendre à l'aéroport. Donc effectivement, ça se discute.
Non, je n'ai pas de problème mais quand je lis les témoignages de personnes ayant franchi le GGB en vélo + Sausalito, cela ne me tente pas et préfère faire ce trajet en voiture. J'habite dans les Vosges, et même si cela ne ressemble en rien aux Alpes, nous avons de belles pentes, et je sors facilement mon vélo pour me déplacer dans ma ville.. euh.. pardon village de 700 âmes.

Dans le Richmond District (le quartier au nord de Golden Gate Park), on trouve un tas de restaurants au bord de Geary Blvd, Clement Street, et Balboa St. Pour un repas rapide et pas cher, cherche un taqueria (resto mexicain). Dans un taqueria, on commande au comptoir et c'est rapide. 2 possibilites: Gordo Taqueria 5450 Geary Blvd, et Chino's Taqueria 3416 Balboa Street. Le Richmond District est un paradis pour des restaurants asiatiques.

Non, pas tellement interessante a mon avis, mais pas desagreable non plus.
Bizarrement, nous devons être un mauvais exemple car nous avons préféré sillonner SF sans véhicule et avons préféré de loin les transports en commun.

Road trip boucle SF-SF du 22juin au 14 juillet 2015
Arrivée sur SF le 22 JUIN AM et départ le 26 JUIN au matin
Hôtel: grant HOTEL sur Union SQUARE
San Francisco : J1, arrivée AM
J2 et J3, pas de véhicule (utilisation des transports en commun)
J4, journée avec le véhicule
Retour sur SF (fin du voyage) le 12 juillet fin AM donc le J21
J22 SF :normalement on devait garder le véhicule encore cette journée (location jusqu"au soir) et bien, on l'a rendu le matin à l'ouverture car on avait largement préféré nos journées SF transport en commun et pieds.
J23 Départ SF pour retour France. Pour info de notre hôtel nous sommes allés à pied prendre le BART pour rejoindre l'aéroport (très facile).
Quant au vélo, nous avions loué des vélos le J3 pour traverser le GOLDEN GATE : ballade au début le long de la jetée ou des plages qui mènent au GOLDEN gate (que du plat, ballade très agréable avec le beau temps) puis petite montée pour rejoindre le GOLDEN GATE (pas insurmontable mais raide tout de même), traversée du golden gate (ok pas de problème), on a continué jusqu'à SAUSOLITO (là effectivement on se trouve dans la circulation avec les véhicules, mais il me semble qu'ALEX a une solution pour éviter cela), pause pique-nique à SAUSOLITO puis départ vers les HOUSE-BOAT (sympa à voir) et là retour vers SAUSOLITO pour retour en FERRIE (là à mon sens c'est ce retour qui a été "pénible" ça a tendance à monter et les retours sont toujours plus pénibles...)
Pour info : mon mari était en tandem avec mon fils.
Cette journée reste un excellent souvenir.
Autrement pour répondre à ta question, SAUSOLITO n'est pas indispensable : pour nous c'était juste pour "finaliser" la traversée du GGB et faire le retour en FERRIE (attention pour nous pas de file d'attente pour prendre le ferrie mais c'était en juin) et je pense qu'en août il doit en être autrement (car en effet à notre retour à SF le 12 juillet, on a pu constater qu'il y avait déjà beaucoup plus d'affluence dans la ville)

Vous n'êtes pas un mauvais exemple, mais juste de voyageurs différents de Jpg13, et il y a encore un bon nombre de personnes qui ont un avis différent... sinon, nous ferions tous la même chose ! et là ! l'ennui !!!!
Merci en tout cas de me dire pourquoi vous avez préféré sans la voiture, car cela me permet de me situer par rapport à votre vécu.
Et pour le tandem, ce serait plutôt mon fils qui serait à moi car il a beaucoup l'habitude de faire de belle balade en vélo.🏴☠️
J'ai fortement envisagé cette visite, mais comme ils ne parlent quasiment pas anglais, j'ai peur qu'ils ne comprennent pas et s'ennuient. Voilà pourquoi j'avais abandonné cette idée.
Concernant la petite balade à vélo pour aller à Sausalito en évitant pas mal de circulation
PS : Apparement ALEX a une solution ( signalé plus haut ) mais je ne la connait pas ... donc si c'est la même ... désolé ...
Voici ce que j'ai fait ( en footing, donc largement faisable à vélo )
à Partir du pont, pour aller à Sausalito, si tu veux éviter une bonne partie de la route et être plus tranquille
- Arrivé à VISTA POINT, sur le parking, tu as sur la droite à un moment donné un escalier qui permet de passer sous la route via un petit tunel, afin de passer de l'autre coté ... ensuite, tu as une descente tranquille pour aller jusqu'à FORT BAKER, tu suis la EAST RD comme ça jusqu'à SAUSALITO
ça te permettra d'éviter pas mal de voiture, et c'est plus tranquille
ci joint un lien avec le trajet que j'ai effectué à partir du GGB ... bonne balade
PS : Bien zoomer la carte au niveau de Vista Point, pour voir ou prendrez l’escalier et le petit tunnel

Attention : Perso, j'ai aussi beaucoup marché à SF, et j'ai trouvé cà tres tres sympa. Je ne suis pas partisan de TOUT faire en voiture
Je suis ainsi rentré à pied de market street jusqu'à Lombard, et une autre fois un aller retour à pied des Piers...
Simplement, j'ai trouvé pratique d'avoir la voiture pour aller dans differents points exterieurs du centre ville, en passant dans des rues ou endroits où on ne passerait pas en transport en commun, ou alors en poursuivant sa visite au nord de Sausalito.
Comme (à part cette année) je gardais la voiture car SF n'etait qu'une etape dans un trajet, autant s'en servir, mais bien entendu sans que ce soit exclusif.

After that, we’re heading to Sherbrooke to visit our daughter, who’s studying at the university there. We’ll spend 3 days with her, and then, since she has a break that week, we’re taking her along for 3 days in Quebec City.
We’ve planned to visit Montmorency Falls and Île d'Orléans.
I’d love to hear what route you’d recommend for the drive from Sherbrooke to Quebec City—we’ll have the whole day to take it easy.

We’ve planned a trip (retired couple) for late August to the first half of September in Western Canada.
Classic itinerary: arrival in Calgary, Banff, Jasper, Clearwater, Whistler, Vancouver Island, departure from Vancouver.
I know you can’t see into the future any better than I can, so I’m obviously not asking what the wildfire situation will be like in a month...
But if any of you could let me know if, CURRENTLY, there are major difficulties—not just for locals, of course, but for tourists as well?
We’re hesitating between taking the chance or canceling what we still can.
We’re not young anymore and don’t have the flexibility we once did...

A friend is renting a car for an upcoming trip during the All Saints' holiday.
Nowadays, all rental cars come with GPS, but do you know if you can use it without paying for the GPS rental? I have no idea since I always use my own!
After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?
We went as a family to Mount Rushmore in 2023, where my son bought a multi-function pocket knife like the one below with his name engraved—'NOAH'.
Unfortunately, he just lost it, and he was really attached to it. So, if there’s a kind soul passing by Mount Rushmore who could bring one back for me (I’d obviously cover all costs), that would be amazing for my son.

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

**Parking:**
We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. As you can see, we're heading back from September 6th to the 27th.
Everything’s booked for September—flights, accommodations, and the car. As I plan, I’ll be asking the experts for help. This is our second trip to California, but most of the stops are new to us.

Cinder Cone and Painted Dunes (Day 4)
Devil’s Kitchen and Boiling Spring Lake (Day 5)
I’ve read there are trails to access the trailheads for Cinder Cone (11 km) and Warner Valley. Are these easy trails for an SUV?
Are there any other must-see spots or things we shouldn’t miss?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.
Thanks for advising me on the booking—should I reserve a room in the hotel or go for a cabin for the best view?

I’m planning a week-long family trip to NYC in October 2026. The focus is on museums and soaking up the New York vibe. I’ve been checking Airbnb, but the prices in Manhattan are through the roof. Since I don’t know NYC well, is it "wise" to look outside Manhattan? Any neighborhoods you’d recommend?

Just a little post that might interest some of you:
Travelers to the United States | Photo Now Mandatory Upon Entry and Exit | La Presse
I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!
