> Distances entre les stations. En plein coeur du centre-ville, les distances peuvent être assez courtes pour marcher d'une station à une autre sans trop de problèmes. Mais en dehors de ça, ça joue facilement dans les 20 et 30 minutes de marche, parfois plus, d'après moi. Un site regorgeant d'infos sur le métro, incluant un plan, ICI

> Baux: au Québec soit tu as un contrat de location qu'on appelle payable "au mois" (même s'il n'y a pas de bail, l'appartement est réputé avoir un bail mensuel), soit c'est un contrat de location d'un an. Tu peux aussi habiter en sous-location pour la durée restante du bail de quelqu'un, mais tu demeures assujettie à sa date de location initiale ainsi qu'aux délais qui y correspondent.
Par exemple: un appartement est loué à X pour une année, typiquement du 1er juillet au 30 juin. Si le propriétaire désire augmenter le loyer au renouvellement du bail, il est légalement obligé d'envoyer à X la lettre d'avis au plus tard 3 mois avant la fin du bail. Donc obligation d'envoi au plus tard le 30 mars dans ce cas-ci. X dispose d'un mois à partir de la réception dudit avis pour signifier qu'il/elle n'accepte pas l'augmentation et en conséquence mettra fin au bail à son échéance (faute de répondre à l'intérieur de ce délai, X est réputé/e accepter les conditions et sera lié/e pour un an de plus).
Si tu sous-loues l'appartement de qqu'un dont le bail est annuel, disons du 1er janvier au 30 juin, et que le proprio envoie un avis d'augmentation - c'est cette personne qui est obligée de répondre et de signifier son intention au proprio. Dans les faits, la personne qui a signé le bail au départ demeure responsable du paiement du loyer, et de la procédure à respecter pour refuser une augmentation dans les délais prescrits -- si X est introuvable, et donc ne donne pas suite à un tel avis du proprio par exemple, c'est le bail de X qui se trouverait renouvelé, mais toi comme sous-locatrice ce n'est pas ton problème. Il est conseillé, lorsqu'on sous-loue un appartement, de signer un accord écrit entre les parties - soit un accord qu'on rédige soi-même, soit un bail officiel (on trouve le document dans les dépanneurs et pharmacies).
Tu peux trouver un appart' avec bail d'un an, et chercher à le sous-louer au bout de 9 mois, mais rien ne garantit 1) que tu trouveras qqu'un et 2) que la personne qui sous-louera ton appartement sera une personne fiable: si elle fait défaut de payer, tu dois assumer (tu demeures responsable de payer jusqu'à la fin de ton bail)
Une personne qui veut quitter son appart avant la fin de son bail peut chercher à négocier avec son proprio une cession de bail avant terme, ce qui la libère alors de ses obligations. Le proprio peut accepter, avec ou sans pénalités, de mettre fin à son bail avant la date qui était convenue sur le bail. Tu peux ainsi trouver à louer un appart entre le 1er mars et le 30 juin, par exemple, soit la période restante du bail initial, si le proprio a accepté la cession du bail avec le locataire qui a signé. Dans ce cas, tu ne serais pas sous-locataire, mais locataire officiellement devant la loi. Avec un bail d'une durée moindre qu'un an. Si cela se produisait, il y a un délai légal à respecter pour aviser le proprio que tu ne renouvelleras pas le bail (à défaut de le faire, tu deviens liée pour une année, au terme de ton 1er bail - "qui ne dit mot consent"), je crois qu'il s'agit d'une période d'un mois pour les baux de moins d'un an (à vérifier)
D'habitude, il y a des babillards à l'université, où tu peux trouver des des personnes cherchant des co-locataires pour la période scolaire. C'est une bonne solution, car alors tu n'es pas liée légalement parce que non signataire du bail. Si tu ne t'entends pas bien avec tes colocs, tu peux déménager ailleurs en cours d'année. Tu peux aussi chercher une co-location sur Craigslist, ou Tout Montréal.

Note: je voulais juste te dire que j'offre des chambres toutes meublées, près de l'université de montréal, voici mon annonce et bon courage:
J’ai 5 chambres à louer à partir du premier août ou septembre 2008. Les prix varient entre 500$-600$, selon la grandeur de la chambre. Tout est inclus : vaisselle, literie, laveuse, sécheuse, télé, téléphone, Internet haute vitesse, électricité, chauffage, eau chaude, meubles, tout!!! Tu n’as qu’à ramener ton linge!!! Il y a une grande cuisine, salon, avec terrasse extérieure, deux salles de bains. L’appartement est étudiant et il est près du HEC, université de Montréal et Polytechnique. Près d'hôpitaux, supermarchés et pharmacies. À 15 minutes en autobus ou métro du centre-ville. L’appartement est à 5 minutes du métro plamandon et 10 minutes du métro côte des neiges. il s'agit de deux appartements dans un duplex qui communiquent, donc à partir du premier juillet ce sera une colocation à dix étudiants! Je m'adresse aux étudiants français qui sont en ce moment étudiants au Québec (CRIF) et qui bénéficient d'une bourse à la mobilité.

1. je ne critique pas: je témoigne que je n'ai jamais vu ça, une chambre à louer pour $600 par mois. Je paye personnellement moins cher pour une maison au complet, très jolie et salubre.

C'est la 1ère fois que je lis qu'il existe des bourses à la mobilité pour les étudiants étrangers au Québec. Est-ce que tu pourrais me dire si c'est versé par une institution française (une université ou un collège spécifique? ou un Ministère?) ou québécoise, et si c'est un droit reconnu à tous les étudiants, ou seulement certains étudiants qui correspondent à des critères précis? Je me demande si nous disposons, pour les étudiants québécois à l'étranger, d'une formule qui se rapprocherait de celle que tu mentionnes.

La bourse dont je parle est délivrée par Le Conseil Régional d'Ile de France. Donc par l'Etat Francais. C'est très connu (comment financer son séjour à l'étranger autrement ??) et les conditions d'attribution sont assez "larges" (pour les classes moyennes et populaires). De toute façon en France, on accorde généralement pas mal de bourses aux étudiants volontaires à un séjour à l'étranger (bourse de fac, bourse du ministère...).
