Hi there, Our departure time is getting closer (we have less than 2 years left—it’s both a long time and so short!). To start preparing seriously, we’ll need quite a bit of info. If anyone knows the rates charged by movers for a crate to French Polynesia, or what pitfalls to avoid (I know you can get quotes directly from movers, but I’d love insights from actual customers😉). Are there any special requirements before leaving France (aside from taxes...)?

Thanks to everyone for your help—every bit of info is useful. We’re aiming for a departure around 06/2010 (just need to save up a little more...). Thanks again!

Hi, The price will vary depending on the size of the container and what you put in it.... Prices are based on volume and are generally all about the same... it's up to you to find the best value for pickup and delivery. As for what's inside, customs will tax it... unless it's for moving purposes and if (with an invoice as proof) the items are over 6 months old. Exceptions include motor vehicles and alcohol.............

So, in preparation for your departure, ask the town hall for a certificate stating that you are permanently leaving the municipality. It will be useful for customs, but also for your 2011 tax return, where you'll declare (with proof ;)) that you left mainland France on such-and-such a date, and thus you'll only be taxable on a pro-rata basis...

Watch out: Tahiti is not the same as Polynesia... so if you plan to live on the islands, keep in mind that the cost of inter-island shipping is often as expensive as shipping from mainland France to Tahiti..... For a 20-foot container, Le Havre to Papeete, I paid around 1000 € a few years ago, and for Papeete to Bora Bora... 2000 €....🤪

Thanks so much for the info! It looks like Polynesian freight is seeing some serious inflation (it’s 2x more expensive to ship 500 km than 20,000... 😉). Great tip about the town hall certificate—I definitely wouldn’t have thought of that (which is exactly why I’m asking for advice, since I’m bound to miss something... 😛).

So I’m starting to gather all this info and tucking it away until it’s time to leave... Thanks again, and if any other ideas come to mind, don’t hesitate—I’m all ears!

You're welcome! For inter-island freight, you have to pay the return freight for your container, whether it's empty or full—it’s the same price...

Hi there, I just contacted a moving company to get an idea of the cost for shipping 2 trunks to Tahiti since I’m heading back in May, and they’re quoting me around 600 €!! Isn’t there a way to find someone who could add these trunks to their container for a fee? Thanks in advance
