Which chimpanzee trek option should I choose in Uganda?

Hi everyone,

I’ve read some travel journals here but I still have a question.

We’re heading to Uganda next February. The gorilla permits are booked, and the flight tickets are sorted too.

My question is about the chimpanzee trek. I’d love to know whether it’s better to book the habituation experience (4 hours) or the standard trek (1 hour).

The price difference isn’t huge, but I keep wondering and I’d hate to miss out on a great experience.

Could I get your thoughts?

Thanks! Have a great day, Elodie

Hi Elodie

I also spent a long time pondering this question before heading to Uganda.

In the end, after reading an enthusiastic and idyllic account of a habituation experience, we opted for that. Back then (2018), I don’t recall there being a half-day habituation option—it was full-day only (which was actually one of the reasons we hesitated, since no other activity was possible that day). Our experience turned out to be much less exciting than the one I’d read about, and our guide eventually took us near an already-habituated group (where we stayed for over an hour since we had the whole day). But ultimately, no regrets: we were alone with the rangers (which is far from the case for 1-hour visits), we discovered the forest in a different way, and in our particular case, we got to see the chimpanzees up close.

For more details, you can read the account of that day here (after Bigodi).

Happy pondering! 😉

Hi Muriel,

Thanks for your feedback—it’s actually your story that’s making me hesitate. You were really lucky, but we can’t predict in advance whether, if things get tough, we’ll also be switched to a habituated family.

We’ve already planned the itinerary, and for that day, we’ve scheduled the chimpanzee trek in the morning, followed by a transfer to QENP for a game drive at Kasenyi Plains.

I’m really not sure if opting for the habituation (UWA’s site says 4 hours) instead of the trek would mess up our day’s schedule. I’ll need to check with the agency.

It’s so hard to decide! 🤪
