Hi there, We’re planning a month-long (or longer) trip to Colombia next February. We’re thinking of getting around by bus or taxi. For part of the trip, we’ve decided to start in Bogotá, then head to Villa de Leyva, then Barichara and the Chicamocha Canyon, and finally arrive in Bucaramanga to catch a flight to Medellín. If bus routes aren’t available, is it easy to find taxis in the villages or at hotels? Thanks for your tips!

Yes, no problem with taxis, even in small towns.

Hi, no problem doing all these steps by bus. My wife and I did it this autumn without any issues (Bogotá/Villa de Leyva/Barichara). I invite you to check out my travel journal published on the site for more details. Also, you’ll find more info on Medellín and the surrounding area in my first travel journal, published a few years ago. Feel free to ask if you need more info.

Hi Phil, My wife and I are planning a trip to Colombia in February for three weeks. So far, we haven’t finalized our exact itinerary, but we’re considering: - 1 week in the colonial villages - 1 week in the coffee region - 1 week on the Caribbean coast To help with our planning, we tried to check your website but couldn’t find the address—could you share it with us? Did you do all your travel by bus? Best regards, Yannick

Hi Phil, is not speaking Spanish and only a little English a problem in Colombia for getting around, making reservations, etc.? Thanks!

You’ll manage to make yourself understood, even if English isn’t widely spoken.

Hi Phil, we’re leaving in early February 2026 for 4 weeks with an itinerary that includes Bogotá, Bucaramanga, Medellín, the Coffee Region (Manizales, Salento, Filandia, Nevados Park), Santa Marta, Minca, Tayrona Park, Cartagena, and the Rosario Islands before returning to Bogotá. I’d love to check out your travel journal, but I’m not sure how to access it—could you point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!

Hi Sautjeau, we’ve more or less planned the same itinerary—did you hire a guide for the whole trip or just part of it? Or did you go independent? Best, Yann

Hi Ptitbout,

There’s no problem being understood in Colombia if you don’t speak Spanish—the country is quite tourist-friendly now, and they’re used to visitors from all over. Plus, these days there are translation apps that make communication a breeze.

That said, knowing some Spanish is a big plus because Colombians are super sociable and usually love chatting. Connecting with locals is one of the best parts of traveling in Colombia.

Good evening, sorry for the late reply! Link to my first travel journal 'Colombia' from our 2018 trip: https://voyageforum.com/v.f?post=8699331;#8699331

Our second trip was in 2024. Quite different from the first one. And it’s not impossible we’ll go back a third time to this country we love so much!

Sorry again for the late reply. Ph.
