Hi there, I’m ready to set off on the Peaks of the Balkans trek from June 18 to July 3. I’m used to long distances, elevation gain, and self-sufficiency. The last thing holding me back is overcrowding. Have any of you done it recently? Could you give me some insight on that and any other tips that might be useful? I’ll be arriving in Tirana, and any advice on getting to Theth would be a huge help too. Thanks for your replies. Alain

Hi there, I did the trek in the second half of August 2022, so my experience is already 3 years old. We had planned to bring a tent and sleeping bag in case of overcrowding, but in the end, we always found space without any issues since new, comfortable accommodations are popping up everywhere—though it does take away some of the charm of this hike. We started from Plav, so I can’t advise you on how to get to Theth. Happy trekking—it’s amazing! Jean-Marc

Thanks for your reply! I’ll try to travel light with just a tarp and a guesthouse every 3 days... Thanks again and have a great day! Al

Hi,

Too bad I didn’t see your message earlier about how to get to Theth. It’s actually really easy from Shkodër. I’m sure you’ve already figured that out by now. The road is brand new! I did a few day hikes in that area (two years ago), but could you tell us more about the Peaks of the Balkans trek that spans three countries? Did it go well? I imagine it’s more crowded on the Montenegrin side than the Albanian one?

Hello Peaks of the Balkans... to sum it up, I’d say it’s an interesting trek, not too challenging and fairly easy for me... but it all depends on your level. 220 km total with 10,650m of elevation gain. 9 days including a rest day in Plav. Days are around 25–30 km with 1,200–1,500m of elevation gain. But you can take more time. Slept outside except for one guesthouse and one night on a farm. Pretty crowded on the southern part. The northern part has little to no people, but it’s much less interesting with quite a bit of pavement... I loved the welcome in Montenegro—friendlier and more open. But the mountains in Kosovo are stunning. Overall, though, the crowds are really growing and keep ruining relationships with shepherds and other locals. For comparison, I hiked in Armenia last year—a similar type of trek but much more challenging: no markings and sometimes no trail, amazing hospitality, and no one else trekking for 15 days. Plus, a fascinating culture. For the Balkans, it’s a shame about the overcrowding between Theth and Valbona—I must’ve crossed paths with 250 people in a day, in groups of 20 or 30!!! Paid a border pass for 40 € that was completely useless... If you want more info... no problem... just ask! Alain

Thanks for the info.

Too bad about the overcrowding between Theth and Valbona—I must’ve crossed paths with 250 people in groups of 20 or 30 throughout the day!!!

Two years ago, I saw very few people—probably because it was late September and the weather was stormy. On the trails starting from Theth (outside the Peaks of the Balkans route), no one!

Paid a border pass for 40 € that was completely useless...

Between Albania and Montenegro?

Honestly, it was an amazing experience. Really physical since I carried my food for 10 days and my camping gear, but without that, it would’ve been even more incredible.

I put together a day-by-day breakdown if you're interested: https://backpackerdudimanche.com/peaks-of-the-balkans/

Lots of info with daily elevation gains, kilometers, great tips, and more.

Why do you say the pass was useless? They didn’t ask you for it, is that it? I don’t get it either: in your first message, you said it was an easy and not very demanding trek, but now you’re saying it was really physical...??

Hi,

So, regarding the permit, I wasn’t asked for it—I didn’t meet anyone who was checked, and no borders were guarded.

As for the physical side (I only wrote one post), I actually said it’s very physical.

It’s not a particularly difficult trek in itself (no via ferrata, no special equipment, or altitude sickness), but it *is* very physical.

My mistake—the other message wasn’t from you! Since you’ve already done the Everest Three Passes trek, if you say this trek is physical, I’ll definitely take your word for it!! Personally, I’ve only seen the Albanian side… the Montenegrin side is older, and back then, I found the locals and accommodations less friendly than in Albania. I’ve never been able to set foot in Kosovo—couldn’t enter in the 80s… I’d love to go now for the Balkans trek, but not solo! Were there any security issues in Kosovo when you were there?
