Safe neighborhood in Barcelona

I'm planning a possible 3-week trip to Barcelona. First time in Spain. I like being close to the metro but not right in the tourist center. Can you recommend a safe neighborhood?

Thanks, René

Hi there,

Gràcia might fit your criteria, or maybe Poble Sec. You’ll be right next to the center without being *in* it, and you can walk everywhere—or at worst, connect via 3-4 metro stops.

If you steer clear of La Rambla—super touristy and packed with pickpockets—and El Raval (even though the area’s cleaned up a lot in recent years), just remember nothing in Barcelona is *really* unsafe. 🙂

Spain isn’t the US... 😛

Oh, that slippery ground! 😏

Barcelona isn’t Spain, actually—it’s probably the least safe big city in Spain. Partly due to mass tourism.

That said, it’s all relative. I’ve spent a few weeks there in total, walked up and down La Rambla and El Raval at all hours, and never had the slightest problem. 🙂

Hi there! In my opinion, Poblenou is the perfect neighborhood—beach, metro, and tranquility, away from the tourist hustle and bustle of the city. I also recommend Gràcia for its offbeat, authentic vibe and more affordable prices. For a first trip to Spain, it’s better to explore spots still frequented by locals, who are welcoming and friendly. I left without doing much research, but I ended up finding lots of info and ideas on "Bonjour Barcelone." I think it could really help, especially for a 3-week stay!
