Avez-vous déjà loué ce type de voiture pour faire dans les 4000kms dans les parcs nationaux de l'ouest ? qq peut-il me faire un retour d'expérience ? J'ai regardé un peu sur le forum mais les avis ont l'air assez controversés 🤪

D'une manière générale, pour plus de 1000 kms, les guides conseillent une catégorie intermédiaire (Cat 3 sur 6).

Salut, je reviens d'un voyage d'un 3 semaines dans l'Ouest américain. J'avais réservé une voiture cat.B chez Hertz, à l'aéroport de San Francisco. En arrivant dans le garage, je vois que c'est une Aveo. Très "basic", même pas de vitres électriques. Bon, elle était OK, mais je suis allée au comptoir (de cet immense garage!) pour dire que je n'étais pas satisfaite. Tout de suite ils m'ont proposé une Mazda 3. Wow! Voiture neuve super équipée. C'est aussi une petite voiture, mais avec un très grand coffre. J'ai fait 4300 km et j'étais ravie! Elle traverse tout... Yosemite, Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Brice, mème Monument Valley... même Valley of the Gods! Bon, ce n'est pas un 4X4 et j'ai trouvé le moyen de m'enliser dans le sable sur la plage de Lone Rock à Page, mais à part ça, c'était super. J'avais même la possibilité, sur le bras de vitesses, de choisir entre l'automatique et la manuelle (sans "clotch").
Ah ! 4000km dans une Aveo ?? Eh ben je conseille pas !!
Au minimum, même en étant que 2 faut pas prendre en dessous de Pontiac G6 (qui a remplacé la Grand Am....) ou une Alero, ou une Chrysler Sebring qui sont toutes les 3 des "intermediate" !

Je voudrais profiter de ton expérience. Pour mon voyage de 52 jours, j'ai booké via Autoescape une fullsize de chez ALAMO à prendre à San Francisco. Le type de véhicule est Chevrolet iMPALA; Je sais que ce n'est qu'indicatif. Si jamais on me laissait le choix à l'aéroport de SF (ce qui arrive parfois selon les forums), quel véhicule recommanderais tu point de vue coffre (2 grosses valises et 2 sacs) confort consommation

En effet, selon l'heure de ton check-in chez Alamo, il se pourrait que tu aies le choix ! Car quand tu franchis la porte du parking, après avoir signé ton contrat, un gars te dit " une full size, c'est dans cette rangée, prenez celle qui vous arrange" ! Les clés sont au tableau de bord !
Bien sur il y a un contrôle à la sortie du parking.... à la guérite ils enregistrent le N° de la charette et le mentionnent sur le contrat. Après seulement tu peux sortir et à toi l'Amérique !!
Choix des voitures : la Chevrolet Impala est une des + grands coffres des full size, lesquelles en pratique sont à peu près toutes confortables, toutes ont un moteur 6 cylindres entre 3.0 et 3.5L et bien sur toutes la clim et une boite auto. En consommation moyenne selon que tu fais ou non des démarrages "canon" au feu vert... compte un peu moins de 9L/100km en conduite cool. Vu que ça coûte environ 0.65€/L te fais pas de souci !!
Les autres modèles full size éventuellement au parking Alamo : Buick La Crosse, Dodge Charger ou Magnum en version break (pas sur que ça soit pas classé "de luxe"). S'il y a une Ford Taurus, regarde le coffre... mais celle que j'ai eue une fois à Montréal était plutôt "noyau de pèche" !
NB : n'attend aucune explication du gars qui te montrera ta rangée ! il n'est pas la pour ça !!😊

Juste le petit conseil suivant.
A SF j'ai loué chez Alamo en gold une Luxury et pour le choix c'est très simple. Tu vas sur le parking où sont garé toutes les voitures. Tu vas dans la zone de la catégorie louée et là tu fais ton choix. Dès que tu tombes sur le véhicule qui te convient, tu retires la clé de la portière, tu fermes le véhicule et tu retournes faire la queue. Ensuite il ne te restera qu'à retourner sur le parking, de charger tes valises et de sortir de l'airport en passant par le gardien.
Pour te rendre chez Alamo il te faudra prendre le shuttle (petit train) que tu trouveras au deuxième étage et tu descends "au Rent a Car".

Personnellement à Los Angeles, j'ai toujours choisi comme souvent la voiture dans la(les) rangées correspondantes à la catégorie puis tu montes dedans, tu la teste et puis tu passe le controle du gars à la sortie qui flashe ta voiture, vois ton contrat et à toi l'amérique mais je suis jamais repassé par le comptoir alamo (en tout cas pour L.A)
Par contre pour NY et orlando entre autre, je n'ai PAS😠 pu choisir la voiture, on me l'avait attribuée, et j'ai eu une ford taurus (moyen) et uen cehvrolet imapala (bcp mieux !)
Cette année je prend pour la 1ere fois une car à Denver Airport avec Alamo et savez vous si on choisis la voiture comme à L.A aussi (rangée bourrée de voiture avec clef sur le contact) ? et qu'il y a t il en intermédiare ? >>> pontiac g6, Chevrolet Malibu (que j'aime bien d'ailleur, c'est une impala en un peu plus petit) et ? ...
Je reviens d'un voyage de 3 semaines dans l'Ouest et j' avais loué chez Alamo à L.A. Comme déjà dit plus haut, j'ai pu choisir entre une bonne quinzaine de voitures Pontiac Grand prix, Montecarlo ou Chevrolet Impala . Nous avons pris la Chevrolet Impala en raison du coffre plus grand que celui de la pontiac et qui a bien voulu accepté nos 4 valises plus 2 sacs a dos d' ados ( nous étions 4 ). Pour la route impeccable c'est un V6, boite auto, clim, auto radio laser, reglage electrique siege chauffeur. Pour la consommation, je n'ai pas calculé, le prix étant tellement différent de nos pompes nationales !
Pour mon expérience, nous étions deux cet été à louer une hyundai accent, qui fait partie des voitures compactes, on a fait 14000 kms, on avait nos sacs de voyage dans le coffre, et c'était très bien, la voiture était suffisamment spacieuse, très comfortable, etc. On a aussi loué avec autoescape. Bon voyage à vous !
Je ne sais pas si tu peux choisir partout, cette façon de faire n'est pas autorisée, même je pense que les américains ne seraient pas content de savoir cela.

A L.A, je suis allé au comptoir, faire le bla bla, choisis la voiture puis sortis apres verification au guerrillon de sortie ... flahe la voiture, controle des papiers etc ...
Pour denver toi qui connais, y a t il le meme comptoir Alamo que à L.A ou on ne choisis pas la voiture la bas ?? car à NY et Orlando j'ai rien choisis du tout !🤪

Pour Denver c'est très différent chez Alamo (et les autres !) : en sortie bagages, tu vas au comptoir Alamo faire ton checkin, puis tu prends un bus-shuttle et 2kms plus loin (peut être plus !!) tu arrives au gigantesque parking des loueurs (dont Alamo) et là tu montres le contrat et on te dit "this is your car" en te donnant les clés !
Après tu suis les panneaux !!
Sauf changement récent.... ainsi en était il en 2002 à Denver, seul aéroport récemment construit aux US

tout a fait d'accord. On lit beaucoup de réactions sur ce forum comme quoi il faudrait au moins une intermédiaire pour faire de la route. Si on es 2 et qu'on a que des sacs, une compacte suffit amplement point de vue taille (compacte aux us = intermédiaire en france)... Après, le problème semble plus être niveau confort / tenue de route des voitures américaines...
Donc, petite question au passage, si on a loué une "chevrolet Aveo ou similaire", as-t-on une chance de se retrouver avec une hyundai accent ?
Effectivement je confirme apres verification de mon voucher il faut :
1 - Faire le check In au level 5 de l'aéroport au comptoir de Alamo ...
2 - Sortir de l'aéroport et board alamo shuttle Bus ...
3 - c'est la ou ej sais po trop ? faut il faire un 2eme check in apres l'arrivée au parking de Alamo, puis pouvons nous choisir la voiture dans une rangée comme ce fut le cas à L.A ... ou avons nous une voiture toute désignée des le 1er check In ?
Puis evidemment passé le guerrillon de sortie/sécurité, flashe de la voiture, présentation ds papiers etc ...
Pour ton 3. : je ne sais pas trop ! Comme je te l'ai dit en 2002 je n'avais pas eu le choix ! Le gars d'Alamo m'avait montré mon auto, les clés étaient dessus ! (en l'occurence une Dodge Intrepid avec des plaques du Nevada...) et il avait annoté mon contrat.
That's it, plus aucun contrôle/guichet après cela !

De mémoire c'était du genre de l'actuelle Aveo (voire même remplacée par Aveo !!) donc petit gabarit, genre Clio ou Peugeot 206. Ce que les Américains considèrent comme exclusivement à usage urbain !

Pourquoi je demande où ?
Parce que par exemple à l'aéroport de SFO, Alamo t'enregistre pour une voiture dans la catégorie voulue, puis ensuite on t'indique la rangée du parking qui correspond, et là tu choisis la voiture qui te convient ! Bien sur dans la rangée indiquée !! sinon à la sortie on ne te laisse pas sortir !!
Mais ceci ne se passe pas comme cela à tous les endroits ! (ni avec tous les loueurs !)

Vraiment cool si l'on peut choisir sa voiture à SFO, j'y suis à partir du 11 septembre, j'ai loué une Chevy Equinox à Alamo via Autoescape, il n'y a que ce modèle dans cette catégorie ou aurai-je le choix? Car elle me plaît vraiment cette voiture. J'espère juste qu'ils ont bien les versions 4WD...
Bon si quelqu un comme Gerrard ou fabienne peuvent m'eclairer sur la location avec alamo a Denver ce serait sympas ...

A Denver, chez Alamo, même principe qu'à SFO décrit plus haut.
Le parking d'Alamo à DEN est immense - à tel point qu'il est situé à plusieurs kilomètres de l'aéroport. C'est un truc de malade 😮 Il y a des navettes qui font la rotation en permanence, jour et nuit entre l'aérogare d'arrivée et le parking Alamo.
Une fois sur place, après les formalités d'usage, on te désignera une rangée de voiture et tu seras libre de choisir celle que tu veux. Ils sauront laquelle tu as pris car avant de sortir du parking, tu dois donner à une hôtesse une affichette accrochée autour du rétroviseur intérieur.
Voilà. Tu sais tout. (et même pas besoin de fabienne 😛)

Par contre le check In se fait dans l'aéroport je crois a West Claim level 5 ? ou le check in se fait apres le alamo shuttle bus puis au parking de alamo ...?
Moi, je n'avais pas checké in dans l'aéroport, mais j'étais arrivé tard le soir.
J'ai tout fait dans les locaux d'Alamo, après la navette, sur le parking géant.
Voila ce qu il y a marqué sur mon voucher/bon d'echange pour la voiture d alamo :

Je profite de ton expérience pour te poser une question. Nous sommes 5 filles à partir visiter les parcs de l'ouest américain. Nous avons donc 5 bagages. Ce sont des sacs de voyage d'environ 100 litres chacun + des sacs à dos. Notre circuit durera 15 jours. Penses-tu donc que le coffre de l'Impala peut contenir 5 sacs de voyage? De plus, en mettant les sacs à dos dans l'espace où on sera assises, le voyage reste-t-il agréable quand même? Chez autoescape, on nous conseille un coup l'Impala et un coup un monospace 7 places. Cependant, à Paris, on conduit des petites voitures donc on a peur de se lancer vers un gros monospace.
J'essaie de trouver des infos pour mon problème. Nous sommes 5 à partir avec une Impala en Californie. Penses-tu que 5 bagages peuvent rentrer dans le coffre? Vos 4 valises étaient-elles grosses? Nous, on en a pour 5 sacs de voyage de 100 litres chacun (soit 70 cm de longueur). Et les sacs à dos à nos pieds dans l'espace où on sera assises?
Quand je suis arrive a San Francisco, il n'y avait plus de fullsize chez Alamo. J'ai donc herite d'un minivan Toyota Sienna que je vous recommande a tous les points de vue. J'ai eu l'occasion par apres de voir le coffre de l'Impala et je n'aurais jamais pu y mettre les 2 valises, 2 gros sacs et 2 sacs moyens. Le minivan se conduit comme une voiture. Il faut un peu s'habituer au debut pour se garer car il est assez long mais on s'habitue vite.
Apres 2000 miles (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Sequoia, Yosemite, Death Valley, Las Vegas, Bryce, donc pas
mal de montagne ou de routes accidentees, ma consommation moyenne est de 11.4 litres)

I know you can’t see into the future any better than I can, so I’m obviously not asking what the wildfire situation will be like in a month...
But if any of you could let me know if, CURRENTLY, there are major difficulties—not just for locals, of course, but for tourists as well?
We’re hesitating between taking the chance or canceling what we still can.
We’re not young anymore and don’t have the flexibility we once did...

A friend is renting a car for an upcoming trip during the All Saints' holiday.
Nowadays, all rental cars come with GPS, but do you know if you can use it without paying for the GPS rental? I have no idea since I always use my own!
After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏

We went as a family to Mount Rushmore in 2023, where my son bought a multi-function pocket knife like the one below with his name engraved—'NOAH'.

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

My 16-year-old son is flying to Grand Rapids with other kids his age. There’s a layover in Detroit. There’s no unaccompanied minor service available. Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

**Parking:**
We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’ve read there are trails to access the trailheads for Cinder Cone (11 km) and Warner Valley. Are these easy trails for an SUV?
Are there any other must-see spots or things we shouldn’t miss?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Just a little post that might interest some of you:
Travelers to the United States | Photo Now Mandatory Upon Entry and Exit | La Presse
I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!
