Patagonia trek with a local agency

Hi there, After a few treks in Nepal, I'm thinking about doing one in Patagonia. But when I see the prices, it’s a bit off-putting!!!! I was used to going with local agencies at really good rates and the same conditions as tour operators. Are there any agencies like that in Argentina or Chile? Thierry

Hi Titi,

You should know that Patagonia is generally twice as expensive as the rest of Argentina, so I’d rather recommend starting with hikes in Argentina before tackling Patagonia. The country is huge, and you’ll likely come back several times. Also, absolutely avoid the period from December 20th to February 20th. Those are the summer holidays in the Southern Hemisphere, and it’s peak season, so prices are very high.

So come outside of peak season, focus on one province, and then go there and check directly with agencies if you’re not able to do it solo. Avoid the internet—talk to them in person on-site. You’ll be surprised by the price differences.

See you soon!

Hi Hervé, Thanks for your reply. But I’m looking for treks to do in the mountains. Are there other mountainous regions in Argentina?

Hi Thierry,

Chilean Patagonia, just like Argentine Patagonia—as Hergé put it so well—is also quite expensive, pricier than the rest of Chile.

On the Chilean side, you’ll find beautiful national parks and nature reserves, both in the Andes mountain range and in the lesser-known Coastal range.

Check out https://es.wikiloc.com/rutas/senderismo/chile & https://www.wikiexplora.com/Trekking_Chile for plenty of trek ideas.

Have a great trip!
