Dommage de zapper la côte de l'Oregon : on a trouvé ça très beau ! de belles plages, de beaux points de vue et des couchers de soleil 😎 😎 😎
D'une manière générale, je trouve que tu passes super vite l'Oregon 😕...
Pour Olympic, je ne peux pas trop comparer avec ce que tu comptes voir plus haut... mais perso, je ne sais pas si c'est parce que le fin du voyage approchait ou si c'est parce que je me suis chopée une allergie d'enfer en forêt, mais le lake Quinault et même la Hoh Rain Forest n'ont pas été un coup de coeur... bien sûr c'est impressionnant et on ne voit pas cela ailleurs... mais ce ne sont pas les paysages que je préfère et après avoir vu suffisamment de forêts, je commençais gentiment à saturer ! par contre, j'ai beaucoup aimé le secteur d'Hurricane Ridge... et le coucher de soleil à Rialto Beach 😎...

2 Juin : Nuit vers Mt Hood Mt Hood
3 Juin : Nuit à Portland Columbia River
4 Juin : Nuit à Randle , Mount St Helens
5 Juin ; Nuit à Seattle , Mt Rainier
Crater Lake cette année était encore à moitié fermé (et quasi aucun trail accessible) début juillet ! mais même sous la neige, on a trouvé cet endroit superbe !
Et la journée du 1er juin : Crescent City --> La Pine (bonjour le fou rire au panneau Entering du bled en question 😄) 😄 me parait un peu chargée (en route) et si jamais Crater Lake est accessible... surtout qu'entre les 2, tu pourrais aussi faire des arrêts vers Prospect pour aller aux Mill Creek Falls puis aux Barr Creek Falls, puis plus loin aux Prospect Falls et Pearsoney Falls (très belles) et encore plus loin les Natural Bridge Falls (qui rentrent et sortent d'un lit de lave)... Et encore plein d'autres "falls" (dont les Toketee Falls) après Crater Lake...
Ensuite, tu vas faire La Pine --> Mount Hood en passant à côté :
- du Newberry National Volcanic Monument (on a bien aimé Big Obsedian Flow et Paulina Falls, mais surtout le secteur de Lava Butte dont le superbe point de vue où il vaut mieux arriver tôt car le parking est limité à une dizaine de places et il faut ensuite avoir un ticket),
- du Smith Rock SP (dont les formations rocheuses sur la Crooked River sont vraiment sympas),
- du John Day Fossil Beds NM (un réel coup de coeur pour le Island in the time trail qui conduit a un bel amphithéâtre de formations vert-bleu et bien sûr le secteur de Painted Hills)
Mais bien sûr, ces endroits nécessiteraient de rajouter qq journées !
Pour la journée "Mount Hood" : si tu vas au très beau Mirror Lake qui reflètent le Mount Hood, c'est, entre autres, sur le parking au départ du trailhead qu'on a vu des éclats de verre partout et une voiture fracturée 😕... Le Trillium Lake est sympa aussi (mais 6$ de Day Use)... le Lost Lake est aussi sur un camping privé, donc 7$ à payer... et gaffe aux moustiques voraces dans ces coins 😉
Pour la journée "Columbia River", on avait commencé par les Multnomah Falls (pas forcément super logique car "au milieu" du trajet), mais pour 2 raisons : les avoir encore dans l'ombre (pour pouvoir faire qq filés) et surtout pour n'avoir personne sur le pont qui les enjambe (parce qu'après c'est le défilé de gens en "kway" rouge ou orange du plus bel effet sur les photos 😛)... la journée "falls" a été chargée et on a fini par le coucher de soleil au Portland Women's Forum Park !
Si tu peux, essayes quand même de visiter un peu Portland, on a bien aimé faire un "petit" tour dans cette ville (Powell's Book, Waterfront, Classical Chinese Garden, Downtown, Japanese Garden dans Washington Park avec une belle vue sur le Mont Hood...)
Le Mont St Helens a été également un de nos coups de coeur, mais je ne sais pas si tu auras le temps de faire la partie sud-est (Ape Cave, Lava Canyon, June Lake...), Johnston Ridge et la partie nord-est de Windy Ridge (ces 2 derniers secteurs offrent bien sûr les plus beaux points de vue !)...
Le Mont Rainier : là, on aurait pu se dire qu'on avait "merdouilllé", car si la neige n'avait pas été encore si présente, empêchant toute randonnée sur le secteur Paradise, il nous aurait fallu y prévoir 1 journée de plus ! Le secteur Sunrise du parc avait aussi beaucoup de trails sous la neige...

Le choix côte/intérieur a été difficile , mais je me suis dis que j'aurais mon compte de "bord de mer" avec (même si ce n'est pas toujours comparable) Floride, Highway 1, Nord Californie, Vancouver Island, Juneau.
La neige et donc des itinéraires fermés me pose problème pour fixer un trajet précis, ma date butoir étant le 6 juin matin pour le vol Seattle/Juneau, je relève les points qui m'intéressent et je crois de plus en plus que nous avancerons au gré des possibilités d'excursions.
Je retiens pour l'instant : Prospect Falls, Natural Bridge, Toketee Falls, Newberry NVM, Smith Rock, John Day et Painted Hills, les autres lieux étant trop éloignées.
Pour le trajet vers le Mt Hood , j'avais trouvé Mirror Lake et une possibilité de logement à Trillium Lake.
Je note pour les photos de Multnomah Falls, la Columbia River étant prévue au matin au départ de Portland ça devrait le faire ...
Portland, on lit souvent que c'est une ville agréable et donc nous y ferons une étape, il y a effectivement selon le Lonely Planet pas mal de choses à voir, j'ai vu un hotel assez central limite du chinatown quartier animé parait il ... le Japanese Garden suite aux photos trouvées sur le net est au programme.
J'avais pensé faire le Mt St Helens par la partie est de Windy Ridge, mais neige, route ? Tout ça sera à voir en approchant de la région début juin , mais j'ai peur de tomber sur des accés fermés, dans ce cas je me pose la question d'un trajet passant par la Spirit Lake Highway.
Mount Rainier à priori nous tenterons les deux coins de Paradie et Sunrise.

Plus modestement, c'est pour donner une idée de la chronolgie de la préparation d'un long séjour. Ce n'est évidement que ma vision des choses, notamment en faisant beaucoup de réservation très tôt afin d'avoir la disponibilité, plus de choix et parfois de meilleur prix : billets avions, hôtels.

Je viens de voir ton post sur ton voyage de 3 mois en 2011. 3 mois ! Que je t'envie, et que de belles journées de préparation en perspective ! Je t'envoie des infos sur ce post concernant l'Ouest canadien.
Pour les évènements, à noter :
- A Calgary, le Stampede évidemment. Du 8 au 17 juillet 2011 : http://cs.calgarystampede.com. Nous avons fait les Frontier Days à Cheyenne l'an dernier et le Stampede cette année. Bonne ambiance des 2 côtés, une vraie compétition (et non un spectacle pour touriste comme à Cody). Mais je dirais que le Stampede est aux Frontier Days ce que Disneyworld est à Disneyland PAris. Tu me suis ? Donc s'il fallait choisir, Calgary sans hésiter. Il ne faut pas manquer le rodéo l'après midi, et le spectacle (cirque du soleil et autres "stars" canadiennes) qui a lieu chaque soir. Par contre, selon moi, aller à Calgary en dehors de cette période ne présente pas d'intérêt. Il vaudrait peut-être mieux dans ce cas de Jasper partir vers Edmonton, apparemment riche en musées dignes d'intérêt (malheureusement nous n'avons pas eu le temps d'y aller).
- A Vancouver, il y a quatre samedi soir en juillet un superbe feu d'artifice. http://www.celebration-of-light.com/. Il y a foule ces soirs là sur English Bay, mais nous avions une chambre au 32e étage de l'Empire Landmark Hotel et pas besoin de sortir pour un spectacle féérique avec les gratte-ciels, la mer et l'île de Vancouver en toile de fond...
- A Victoria, c'est des festivals et évènements non-stop. http://www.tourismvictoria.com/default.aspx#
Pour les hôtels, nous n'avons pas eu trop de problème si ce n'est à Tofino où tout était plein ou presque. Selon ton budget, le Wickanninish Inn www.wickinn.com est magnifique et superbement situé. Nous n'avons fait qu'y passer par curiosité, et ils n'avaient plus que des chambres à 500 $ disponibles...
A Jasper, l'hôtel Athabasca nous a donné parfaite satisfaction pour un prix très modique, et un emplacement de choix (tous restaurants, commerces et visitor center à quelques pas). http://www.athabascahotel.com/
A Victoria il est bien d'avoir un hôtel à proximité du Inner Harbour.
A Vancouver, je recommande sans hésiter l'Empire Landmark Hotel (voir plus haut). http://www.empirelandmarkhotel.com/. Nous avions demandé "high floor" et avons été exaucé, avec en plus une vue plein ouest côté mer.
Malheureusement j'aurais quitté fin juin le canada pour revenir sur les USA et rentrer en France le 7 juillet.
Par contre je serais aux alentours de Jasper pour le 21 juin date des fêtes autochtones au Canada, je n'ai pas encore trouvé de manifestations particulières à cette occasion mais je pense qu'il doit y avoir quelque chose à en tirer. Etais tu par là et as tu eu l'opportunité d'assister à un festival, commémoration, .....?
Début avril, je serais au PowWow Gathering of the Nations à Albuquerque, qui est un des plus important parait il.
Pour le logement sur Victoria j'ai trouvé un Best Western dans le "old town"à deux rues du port, à Ucluelet une maisonette dans les bois, Vancouver ton hôtel me semble bien sympa je le retiens !

C'est effectivement ce genre de logement que je cherche vers Jasper, je m'étais fait une petite liste , j'y rajoute ton info , en prévision d'une réservation.
A ce jour, les locations de véhicules sont faites.
Par méfiance, justifiée ou pas, je ne passe que par les loueurs "institutionnels" et cela donne après déjà quelques modifications :
14 jours Miami-Orlando HERTZ Grand Marquis
21 jours Albuquerque-Las Vegas ALAMO Chevrolet Tahoe
23 jours Las Vegas-Seattle HERTZ Cadillac STS
5 jours Juneau-Juneau HERTZ Nissan Sentra

En sachant que toutes les réservations sont annulables/modifiables sans frais, cela laissant donc la possibilité si des promos passent de saisir l'opportunité. Par loueurs "institutionnels" j'entends HERTZ AVIS ALAMO DOLLAR (mais Dollar n'approvisionne pas Seattle). Toutes ces réservations sont réglées par Mastecard Platinum (cf assurances), chez HERTZ carte Club Gold Five Star (cf assurance), certaines sont pré-payées (depuis trois mois les tarifs ont déjà légèrement augmentés en dehors de toutes fluctuations du change €/$).
Autant chez HERTZ que chez ALAMO, existe la possibilité de remplir un formulaire pour : identité, permis afin d'accélérer la prise en charge du véhicule. Chez HERTZ c'est hyper rapide, votre nom et véhicule sont affichés sur un tableau devant l'agence, vous rentrez, donnez, votre carte Club et Master, votre passeport, trois minutes, vous repartez avec le véhicule attribué. Chez ALAMO on peut même ajouter sur le net les autres conducteurs (payant), n'ayant encore jamais loué chez eux, je ne peux certifier de l'efficacité du processus. Chez HERTZ le deuxième conducteur est gratuit mais ne peut être enregistrer que sur place.
Effectivement avec Hertz, c'est très rapide et gratuit pour le deuxième conducteur .. c'est appréciable.
De plus, ils n'ont pas essayé de nous refiler tous les trucs indispensables pour te faire dépenser de l'argent😉
A Denver, nous avons trouvé que le personnel était très disponible
Possesseur de la carte "Club Gold".. cela fait peut être toute la différence😇

La réduction obtenue (CDP) avec la carte Membre Marriott (gratuite, à demander sur le site, envoyée par courrier) est plus importante que la promo actuelle sur les USA, 5% de mieux environ.
- Soutwest Airlines ayant ouvert les réservations jusqu'à début juin 2011, j'ai pris les billets pour le vol Orlando/Albuqueque direct 117,50€/personne avec Early Check-In.
- Vu le taux de change du $ à 1,4025 je commence l'achat de mes travelers.

Je viens d'acheter des travellers cheques aupres de "Yes change". Apparemment avec un super taux... au cas ou... si ca peut servir a d'autres 🙂
Achat des billets pour le ferry de Port Angeles à Victoria : 1 véhicule et 2 passagers 81,50$ payable le jour du trajet, dont 11$ de réservation.
Achat de deux places pour le match NBA des Knicks de New York contre Chicago Bulls au Madison Square Garden 221,30€.
Pour info : j'avais acheté en février 2009 deux "New York City Pass", ayant dû annuler le séjour, j'ai pris contact par mail avec eux et ils sont toujours valables pour avril 2011 à conditions d'aller à leur bureau près de Times Square pour les échanger, deux ans après c'est sympa !
Achat de deux places pour le concert de U2 à Seattle le 4 juin.
Il me faut donc modifier le programme sur les deux trois jours précédents entre Crater Lake et Seattle.
Entre parenthèses, votre condition physique me fait rêver, de trop beaux sites m'échappent
Vu le programme 2011 concocté😉 (dénivelé important et distance à parcourir qui s'allonge😛 au fur et à mesure) il va falloir s'entraîner sérieusement au cardio 😉😏 sinon, les pentes vont être dures à remonter !
Mais c'est le prix à payer pour admirer de beaux sites, alors tant qu'on a la santé, il ne faut surtout pas s'en priver !

Je reviens de NY, y ai passé 5 jours fin de semaine dernière, avec pour commencer fort les Knicks contre Golden State, au MSG évidemment.
Bien bien, quoi qu'il ait fallu attendre la fin du 4e quart temps et la remontée des Knicks pour que le public s'échauffe , )
Le hic, j'en ai moyennement profité. Ca faisait 24h que j'étais en route, très peu voir pas dormi dans l'avion, j'étais limite rupture, avec la tête sur les genoux à chaque pause 🤪

En fait non, suis tout simplement curieux de voir ce rodéo là un 4 juillet jour de fête nationale, ce doit être typique dans le genre et à voir une fois. Même s'il y a beaucoup de touristes étrangers , j'ai envie de voir comment les américains vivent ce jour là à Cody. Pour ce qui est de la mal traitance des animaux, sujet sans fin ...

After that, we’re heading to Sherbrooke to visit our daughter, who’s studying at the university there. We’ll spend 3 days with her, and then, since she has a break that week, we’re taking her along for 3 days in Quebec City.
We’ve planned to visit Montmorency Falls and Île d'Orléans.
I’d love to hear what route you’d recommend for the drive from Sherbrooke to Quebec City—we’ll have the whole day to take it easy.

Classic itinerary: arrival in Calgary, Banff, Jasper, Clearwater, Whistler, Vancouver Island, departure from Vancouver.
I know you can’t see into the future any better than I can, so I’m obviously not asking what the wildfire situation will be like in a month...
But if any of you could let me know if, CURRENTLY, there are major difficulties—not just for locals, of course, but for tourists as well?
We’re hesitating between taking the chance or canceling what we still can.
We’re not young anymore and don’t have the flexibility we once did...

A friend is renting a car for an upcoming trip during the All Saints' holiday.
Nowadays, all rental cars come with GPS, but do you know if you can use it without paying for the GPS rental? I have no idea since I always use my own!
After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?
We went as a family to Mount Rushmore in 2023, where my son bought a multi-function pocket knife like the one below with his name engraved—'NOAH'.
Unfortunately, he just lost it, and he was really attached to it. So, if there’s a kind soul passing by Mount Rushmore who could bring one back for me (I’d obviously cover all costs), that would be amazing for my son.

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Travelers to the United States | Photo Now Mandatory Upon Entry and Exit | La Presse
I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!
