Hi,

My family and I (2 kids and 2 adults) are planning to travel to Kerala, India, in February. What vaccines should we get for this region?

Thanks,

Have a great day,

Hi there,

I also traveled to India with kids last summer. For Kerala, just like the rest of India, no vaccines are mandatory. However, some are recommended depending on age and individual vaccination history: DTP (mandatory in France anyway), hepatitis A and B, and typhoid. But it’s best to check with a doctor about the last two, as they might advise against some depending on your situation. In my case, I was only told to renew my DTP, which was about to expire—nothing else.

For malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases, instead of taking medication that can have strong side effects and isn’t 100% effective, I recommend buying Odomos cream at a pharmacy as soon as you arrive at the airport. It’s really the most effective mosquito repellent and a true institution in India. Apply it before nightfall, as that’s when the disease-carrying mosquitoes tend to appear.
