Juste de retour d'un voyage en vélo entre Ho Chi Minh et Bangkok, je tiens juste à raconter une petite mésaventure qui m'est arrivé au Vietnam.
Arrivé à Lao Bao, à la frontière Laotienne, j'avais un mauvais présentiment. En effet, je m'étais déja fait refuser l'entrée au sud du Laos, la frontière de la route 18B ne délivrant pas de Visas, j'avais du afronter un cyclone et des inondations en remontant vers Danang, et voila que je me trouvais enfin à la frontière du Laos et en me disaint que plus grand chose pourrait m'arrêter.
Sauf qu'au Vietnam lorsque vous louez une chambre d'hôtel, ce dernier vous demande votre passeport et vous le remet le lendemain. Beaucoup pensent qu'il est juste conservé comme caution en attendant que vous paiez la chambre. Ce que peu savent, c'est que l'hôtel va présenter le passeport à la police.
Donc suite à mon mauvais présentiment, puisque la seule raison qui pouvait encore m'empêcher d'atteindre le Laos serait la perte de mon passeport, je descend vers 21h15 pour réclamer mon passeport et payer la chambre d'avance. Le réceptioniste m'indique alors qu'un de ces employé est parti le présenter à la Police vers 21h et qu'il devrait être de retour vers 21h30. Ne voyant personne revenir vers 21h45, je redemande au réceptioniste ou est mon passeport. Ce dernier me sentant un peu nerveux, téléphonne à son employé et lui ordonne immédiatement de revenir. Vers 22h, l'employé se pointe en scotter avec un fourre plastique contenant des documents ainsi que mon passeport dans un panier à l'avant du scooter. En descendant du scooter, j'ai constaté que ce dernier était complètement ivre et tenait à peine debout.
Bref, ça aurait pu mal ce terminer, mais heureusement j'ai retrouvé mon passeport. J'aimerais toutefois bien savoir à quoi rime cette loi débile de devoir présenter un passeport à chaques étape à la police. Une fiche informative ou une copie du passeport ne suffirait pas? Certe ça obligerait le fonctionaire à retaper les informations dans son ordinateur, et lui procurerait une surcharge de travail dont il ne doit pas être habitué. C'est l'employé bourré qui devrait faire l'objet de ta colère, il a pris des risques idiots qui auraient pu avoir des conséquences très néfastes pour toi et mérite une sévère remontrance. Mais bon, tu es en vacances et je comprends que tu n'aies pas eu envie de faire la police à la place de celle-ci.
Pour la "loi" (mais en est-ce une ? je n'en sais rien) qui oblige à présenter le passeport à la police, si c'est vraiment le cas, cela fait partie de ces choses "différentes et difficilement compréhensibles par nous" auxquelles il faut bien se plier quand on voyage loin de chez soi. Les choses changeront progressivement, mais "au rythme du Sud". Un peu comme chez nous il faut attendre plusieurs accidents mortels pour voir se dresser un feu rouge à la sortie d'une école 😕.

Ce pays a des lois et des règlementations, il faut s'y soumettre sans ingérence, ni commentaire politiquement incorrect, et insultant.
Le passeport n'a pas été perdu, et rendu largement avant le délai contractuel ! et l'état supposé d'imprégnation alcoolique de l'employé ne l'a pas mis en danger !
Et s'il y avait des épidémies d'incidents (des vrais! pas des "humeurs", comme ce message), cela se saurait sur tous les forums.

Je ne crois pas, mais je ne peux te le certifier. J'ai donné mon passeport à chaque fois et n'ai jamais eu de problème pour le récupérer. A Huê, je l'ai même laissé dans le tiroir de la réception pendant la durée de mon séjour, j'avais un bon contact avec le gérant et je trouvais que c'était un endroit "safe" (petit hotel et relations assez proches entre les tenanciers et les clients). Je ne le ferais pas n'importe où quand même.

Sur ce point, je ne suis pas d'accord avec toi, sauf sur le mot "supposé" puisque je n'y étais pas. Par contre, l'état d'imprégnation alcoolique engendre toujours un danger, que ce soit relativement à la perte d'un passeport qui a été confié ou à la sécurité des personnes à l'entour de l'imprégné.
Par contre, il est évident que si des problèmes récurrents de "détournement", "perte" ou autre de passeports avaient lieu, les autorités feraient le nécessaire pour que cela ne se produise plus.

Malgré des principes proches, et une volonté sans faille, j'ai me résoudre plusieurs fois à y déroger, en particulier dans des pays d'Afrique centrale, mais d'autres aussi, ou alors c'était à moi de convoyer le passeport au poste de police, avec tout l'inconfort lié, et plus si affinité !

La plupart du temps ce sont des sornettes entretenues par les hôteliers ; je n'ai jamais pour l'instant rencontré de pays où c'était vraiment une obligation légale - à y réfléchir je me demande si la Serbie n'était pas dans ce cas, cependant, mais j'y suis resté peu de temps...
Je ne connais pas l'Afrique.
1) Vous pouvez tout à fait fournir la photocopie de votre passeport à la réception de l'hotel à la place de l'original.
Souvent les hoteliers exigent le passeport original comme une sorte de « caution » pour les paiements, donc si vous payez à l'avance, pas de problème pour la photocopie.
2) Le pointage de votre pièce d’identité (votre passeport) à la police locale est une règle applicable à tout le monde (même pour les viets locaux) au VN, que ce soit vous êtes hébergé dans un hotel ou chez particulier.
Pourquoi ? Simplement, pour suivre vos déplacements (on vous surveille sur le territoire du VN…).
3) Rassurez-vous, il n’y a pas de risque avec votre passeport dans les hotels au VN.
Une fois au VN, j’ai quitté l’hotel de Nha Trang pour me rendre à Saigon.
A 200km au sud Nha-Trang, j’ai aperçu que j’ai oublié récupérer mon passeport.
J’ai donc téléphoné à l’hotel à NhaTrang afin de leur demander envoyer en express mon passeport à une adresse de Saigon. Deux jours plus tard, j’ai bien reçu mon passeport.
Un grand soulage pour moi et un grand merci pour l'hotel de Nha Trang.

c'est la réponse que j'ai eu quand j ai demandé aux hotelliers la raison de cette démarche, et c'est aussi et encore pour ca qu'il est difficile de dormir chez l habitant.

C'est la réponse type que vous obtenez partout dans le monde quand un hotelier veut s'assurer de votre paiement par la rétention abusive - et illégale - de votre passeport ; rien ne prouve qu'il faille le croire.... 🤪
Je suis très étonnée, nous étions au Vietnam fin novembre 2007 et seul, un hotel nous a demandé les passeports par 2 fois puique nous y avons séjourné 3 nuits mais pas d'affilée. Après une absence prolongée sur le forum je vais vous donner quelques explications vu que je gère un hôtel au Vietnam. La présentation du passeport ORIGINAL est obligatoire, en plus nous devons remplir une fiche déclarative indiquant ; Nom, Prénom, date et lieu de naissance, date et lieu de dilivrance du passeport, date de délivrance du visa et date de fin de durée, date d'arrivée dans l'hôtel, n° de chambre. Dans ma ville si on ne présente pas l'original du passeport entre 20h et 22h, la police se déplace pour vérifier qui est présent dans l'hôtel et impose le retour sur le champ dans la ville ou est resté le passeport ou alors vous passez la nuit au poste... En général, dans les hôtels, les passeports sont conservés dans un coffre. Ce système sert à payer la taxe de séjour de chaque client et..........
On nous a promis un système sur internet qui est déjà en place dans les grandes villes mais, faudrait-il qu'internet marche à la perfection et qu'il n'y ai pas de coupure d'électricité.... (modem)...
Donc, quand vous voyagez au vietnam, ayez votre passeport... les photocopies ne sont utiles que si vous le perdez et ce, au niveau des autorités françaises (ambassade, consultat) pour faciliter les démarches. je vous conseille également une copie de votre visa et de vos billets d'avion.

Avec un visa en poche, tu peux passer à Lao Bao ou celle du sud vers Attapieu. La route qui va du Vietnam à Attapieu est magnifique, je l'ai fait depuis le Laos, presque jusqu'à la frontière.
La frontière de LaoBao délivre des Visas pour autant que tu arrives aux heures d'ouverture, mais pas celle d'attapieu.

I’m planning a trip from France to Alberta/British Columbia, and I’m unsure about which bank card to use for the security deposit with the rental company (I’m thinking of going with AVIS).
I contacted Avis Canada, and they told me a credit card is absolutely required. I asked my bank for a credit card (a *real* credit card), but they only offered me a deferred debit card.
My question: For a rental with Avis Canada, is a Gold International Mastercard deferred debit card usable for the security deposit needed to finalize the rental? Is the "CREDIT" label enough? (Some cards say "CREDIT" and others say "CARTE DE CREDIT"—seems minor, but it’s actually a big deal in how the card works.)
I’ve seen conflicting info everywhere I look... My bank says it’s *usually* okay (the deferred debit card), while Avis Canada insists it *must* be a credit card, not debit—even when I mention the deferred debit card.
I know the whole credit card concept is already confusing, and on top of that, some sites say a deferred debit card counts as a credit card, while others say it doesn’t.

I’ll explain my situation.
Unfortunately, I lost my passport, and I only realized it two weeks before my departure for a humanitarian mission in Libya. I’m a nurse, and this mission really means a lot to me.
First, I applied for an emergency passport, but it was denied by the Val-d'Oise prefecture on the grounds that a planned humanitarian mission wasn’t considered an urgent reason.
So, I submitted a biometric passport application on July 20th. Since then, the tracking has been stuck, and the town hall can’t (or won’t) give me any clear information. Every time I call, I get a different story. The last update I received was that the passport had been produced since July 23rd with a status of "about to be shipped," but nothing since then.
I’ve managed to push my departure back to next Tuesday at the latest, but I’m starting to really panic.
Have any of you submitted an application around July 20th, especially in Val-d'Oise (95)? How long did you wait between the passport being produced and it being available at the town hall? Is it normal for this step to take this long?
This mission means so much to me. I had everything organized, and I’m also supposed to attend a friend’s wedding right after near the border.

I’m a bit embarrassed because I need to travel to Quebec from February 27th to March 13th. I’m a regular visitor to Canada—this will be my 10th trip since 1997, plus a year as a permanent resident (2000–2001) and a cross-country run from Vancouver to Halifax in 2011. So, I’m definitely not a terrorist!
But since our last trip in July 2015, they’ve introduced this eTA thing. Seems more like a way to make money than to actually secure Canada, if you ask me, but anyway, that’s not the point.
I applied for an eTA for myself, my wife, and our two kids. They all got approved within hours, but not me! I was asked to create a GC key and then an IRCC account, which I did. Normally, you get news within 72 hours, but since Monday, January 15th, nothing!
In the "message" section of the account, it says "explanation letter (required)" with a deadline of January 25th, but I can’t find any explanation anywhere—despite searching the Canadian government website and Google. No links, nothing!
I’ve emailed them but haven’t heard back yet. I’m thinking of calling the Canadian embassy in Paris tomorrow. Even though I’m not stressing yet, it’d be a bummer if everyone else got to go without me!
If anyone’s had this issue before or knows what this explanation letter is about, I’d love to hear more.

I bought a one-way flight (Ryanair) and a return flight (EasyJet) to spend a week in Morocco in April.
My passport expires 3 weeks after the return date.
Some websites say the passport must be valid for 3 months at the time of entry.
However, it will still be valid both on entry and return, but its validity will only be 1 month at the time of entry (and 3 weeks on the return date, everything prepaid).
It's an individual family trip.
The consulate can't give me an answer—they're still looking into it (really!)
Last year, we stayed for 3 months in Thailand, north of Khao Lak, and were able to benefit from the 2-month visa exemption, renewable for one month by going to Takua Pa to validate a 1-month extension (1,900 baht).
This year, it’s a disaster for us—not only were we planning a 4-month stay, adding a visa run in between (which some say is quite risky), but the law is apparently changing in the coming months with the return of the 1-month exemption (plus the usual 1-month option). So, we looked into applying for a 6-month multiple-entry visa, allowing a maximum of 60 consecutive days in Thailand. However, I can’t find anywhere the minimum time required outside Thailand between two stays—do any of you have an idea?

As a French national, I need to obtain a short-stay visa that can be converted to a long-stay one. To do this, I have to send the required documents to the Madagascar embassy in Paris.
No issues with that procedure so far.
If I get this visa, once I arrive in Madagascar, I’ll need to provide the same documents to the Ministry of the Interior in Anosy. I’m trying to find an email address or website for the Ministry to check which documents I need to submit (I think they ask for additional ones).

I’d like to know if anyone has already applied for a private visa to Russia with an invitation from a Russian resident.
I traveled earlier this year with an e-visa, but since I want to stay longer, I’ll be visiting my friend who lives in eastern Russia.
For the visa application, does the invitation need to be on an official paper form issued by the Russian ministry? And most importantly, do I need to present the original for the application, or is there an electronic version that can be sent directly to the consulate in France?

I filled out the B2 form to apply for a visa, created an account on Atvis to pay the visa fees and schedule a meet-up, but every time I try to pay with my Boursobank Visa 1st card, they refuse the payment with a message telling me to check my details (address), even though everything is correct. Does anyone know why this is happening, or maybe they don’t accept Visa cards? Are you aware of this?

I’ve read that China may ask for proof of exit within 30 days (flight ticket or other reservation). Since we’d be leaving by land, I’m wondering how this works in practice.

On her ticket, it only has her maiden name (e.g., Martine DUPOND).
On her passport, it’s written as Martine DUPOND épouse AVRY.
No issues for travel, I hope I did the right thing with the ticket?
Then for the ESTA, is just Martine DUPOND enough, or do I need to include the "épouse AVRY" part like on the passport?

I saw on the French Embassy in Peru’s website and the Peruvian Consulate in Paris’s site that the rule is to have a passport valid for 6 months *after the arrival date* (not the return date).
I arrive in Peru on August 13, 2019 (for about twelve days), and my passport is valid until February 16, 2020.
That’s 6 months and 3 days after my arrival date in Peru. In my opinion, I’m good to go.
But could I still be denied entry if they say I don’t cover the return date or that I’m too close to the 6-month mark?
