I’m a bit embarrassed because I need to travel to Quebec from February 27th to March 13th. I’m a regular visitor to Canada—this will be my 10th trip since 1997, plus a year as a permanent resident (2000–2001) and a cross-country run from Vancouver to Halifax in 2011. So, I’m definitely not a terrorist! But since our last trip in July 2015, they’ve introduced this eTA thing. Seems more like a way to make money than to actually secure Canada, if you ask me, but anyway, that’s not the point. I applied for an eTA for myself, my wife, and our two kids. They all got approved within hours, but not me! I was asked to create a GC key and then an IRCC account, which I did. Normally, you get news within 72 hours, but since Monday, January 15th, nothing! In the "message" section of the account, it says "explanation letter (required)" with a deadline of January 25th, but I can’t find any explanation anywhere—despite searching the Canadian government website and Google. No links, nothing! I’ve emailed them but haven’t heard back yet. I’m thinking of calling the Canadian embassy in Paris tomorrow. Even though I’m not stressing yet, it’d be a bummer if everyone else got to go without me! If anyone’s had this issue before or knows what this explanation letter is about, I’d love to hear more.

I’m planning a trip from France to Alberta/British Columbia, and I’m unsure about which bank card to use for the security deposit with the rental company (I’m thinking of going with AVIS).

I contacted Avis Canada, and they told me a credit card is absolutely required. I asked my bank for a credit card (a *real* credit card), but they only offered me a deferred debit card.

My question: For a rental with Avis Canada, is a Gold International Mastercard deferred debit card usable for the security deposit needed to finalize the rental? Is the "CREDIT" label enough? (Some cards say "CREDIT" and others say "CARTE DE CREDIT"—seems minor, but it’s actually a big deal in how the card works.)

I’ve seen conflicting info everywhere I look... My bank says it’s *usually* okay (the deferred debit card), while Avis Canada insists it *must* be a credit card, not debit—even when I mention the deferred debit card.

I know the whole credit card concept is already confusing, and on top of that, some sites say a deferred debit card counts as a credit card, while others say it doesn’t.

Question: Is the I-94 form required, mandatory, and should it be filled out on the bus or in advance???

I filled out the B2 form to apply for a visa, created an account on Atvis to pay the visa fees and schedule a meet-up, but every time I try to pay with my Boursobank Visa 1st card, they refuse the payment with a message telling me to check my details (address), even though everything is correct. Does anyone know why this is happening, or maybe they don’t accept Visa cards? Are you aware of this? Thanks for your feedback! Elisabeth

Hi there, We need to apply for a B2 visa because we visited Iran in 2018. It currently costs $185, but they’re planning an additional $250 fee per person for the same visa—it’s been approved but not yet implemented. Does anyone know when this fee will take effect? Thanks in advance! Elisabeth

Hi there, Just a question that’s probably been asked before (though usually the other way around for my situation :)) My wife and I are heading to the US. On her ticket, it only has her maiden name (e.g., Martine DUPOND). On her passport, it’s written as Martine DUPOND épouse AVRY. No issues for travel, I hope I did the right thing with the ticket? Then for the ESTA, is just Martine DUPOND enough, or do I need to include the "épouse AVRY" part like on the passport? Thanks in advance!

However, I heard on the radio that a new law will be implemented in two months requiring travelers to provide information about their social media activity in addition to the ESTA.

My question is: will my current ESTA no longer allow me to enter the U.S.?

I’m planning to hike the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail) in the U.S. this year, starting in mid-April. For those who aren’t familiar, it’s a long-distance trek across the U.S., stretching from the Mexican border all the way to Canada. It’s about 4,250 km to cover, usually taking 4-5 months (I’ve budgeted 5 months for myself). The route takes you through stunning landscapes—think 6 different ecosystems, 7 national parks, 25 forests, and dozens of lakes and rivers. I was looking for a multi-month trek, and this one sold me the dream. I’m determined, a lover of wild nature and challenges, and I think about it every day. Nothing’s going to stop me from doing it—except, maybe, that infamous B2 visa.

Here’s my problem: I’ve read a lot online about this visa, and to maximize my chances of getting it, I basically need to: - Provide clear and coherent explanations for my trip (so far, so good) - Prove sufficient financial means (still okay, even though I’m not rich) - Show proof that I’ll return to my home country after the 6 months granted by the visa (employment promise, work contract, property ownership) (uh-oh… this is where it gets tricky)

The thing is, I’m a professional musician, and I don’t have a stable job. I make a living by performing at concerts and giving private saxophone lessons, but I mostly work under the table. I’ve also worked in restaurants for a long time, but same issue. I don’t own an apartment or a house, but I rent a music studio in an artist’s workshop, and I’m currently living with my dad. I have strong family ties in Paris (like my parents or grandparents). I also have an uncle who lives in Seattle, and I plan to visit him at the end of my trek.

- What do you think my chances are of getting the visa? - Do you think I should lie? (I’ve built a great relationship with my former boss, and I thought maybe I could ask her for a fake employment promise—but I’m not sure she’d agree, or I could forge one myself?) - Any advice?

Any tips would be welcome. This is really weighing on me day by day, and I’m so afraid my dream will be ruined because of it…

Hi there, I need to apply for an ESTA: we’ll be on a cruise from Barcelona and will have a stopover in San Diego before disembarking two days later in Los Angeles. From there, we’ll continue our trip on our own, all the way to Las Vegas, where we’ll catch our flight back to Paris. So our point of entry into the U.S. will be San Diego. The form then asks if we’re in transit, and if not, to provide contact details for a U.S. contact (hotel or otherwise). But we don’t yet know what we’ll be doing there—we’ll actually be traveling around since we’re heading to San Francisco and Las Vegas without any prior reservations. I wanted to share my experience in case it helps others. I applied for an ESTA to travel to the United States, but unfortunately, it was denied because I checked a "Yes" box by mistake. I then tried contacting several numbers I found here on the forum for help or to find out how to reset my ESTA application, but most of them no longer work. One of the numbers I called wasn’t even assigned (it came from a 2015 discussion). I also tried reaching the U.S. Embassy in Paris, but they told me to apply for a visa instead.

If anyone knows the correct official number or procedure to reset a denied ESTA application, I’d really appreciate it. My departure is in 2 weeks, and I won’t have time to get a visa.

Hi everyone, I’m heading to the United States in August, specifically Grand Junction, Colorado, and I’d love to hear about your experiences with renting a car in this slightly tricky situation:

I still have my old French driver’s license (the pink paper version, still valid),

I didn’t have time to get an International Driving Permit (IDP),

And I plan to use a Visa debit card, not a credit card.

I’ve booked a car with Budget. I’ve seen that they *can* accept debit cards under certain conditions, especially at airport locations, but there are often high hold amounts for the deposit, and sometimes requirements like a return ticket or an extra ID. - Has anyone rented a car in the US under these conditions before? - Was the paper license accepted without any issues? - Did the debit card cause problems when putting down the security deposit? Hi, I successfully applied for an ESTA for my family and myself for an upcoming trip to New York in August. But here’s what I didn’t realize: my two older daughters are leaving for Costa Rica in a week with a layover in the United States, something I wasn’t aware of when I filled out the ESTA application. The person handling their application is stuck because one is already on file... My question is: is this ESTA valid for their layover even though it’s not specified on the application (since a U.S. address was provided)? If not, how can I reapply for their transit ESTA? I got approval for my visa on May 16th. There’s a new provider handling passport delivery now, but when I submitted my application online, it was a different one—I’d already paid for delivery with them. Specifically, it was CSRA FRANCE SARL, 3-5 rue St Georges in Paris. I’d like to get a refund for that delivery, but there’s no way to reach the embassy, and I don’t have a phone number or email address to contact them. I’m planning a backpacking trip to the USA for autumn 2024.

I’ve already been to New York in February 2024, but my ESTA expires on September 27, 2025. However, I’d like to leave in early September. Is it possible to apply for a new ESTA before my trip so that the new one is valid instead of the old one when I’m there?

I’m not sure what’s being said on the various European diplomatic sites, but on the Belgian one, they mention that an ESTA and/or visa aren’t a guarantee of entry. Immigration services have the final say—they could even ask to see your electronic devices like phones, tablets, or cameras. And there might be extra hassles for LGBTQIA+ travelers.

Hi everyone, I’m traveling in April with a layover in the United States. I filled out the ESTA form but made a mistake by checking the wrong boxes, so my authorization was denied. I tried again a few days later, this time checking the right boxes, but the application seemed stuck ("AUTHORIZATION DENIED"). I tried one last time a few days ago, and—oh, miracle—"AUTHORIZATION APPROVED". However, I’m still worried because my first request was denied. Could I still be turned away at immigration?! I’d like to visit Niagara Falls from the Canadian side: is an eTA enough for a French citizen (from Toronto or Ottawa) and then public transport? Which Canadian city is the easiest to get there from? I plan to spend one night in Canada before seeing the falls on the American side. Do I need an ESTA to visit the American side for just a few hours and then return to Canada?

Hello everyone, We’re planning a family trip (my wife and our two kids) for 12–13 months in 2026–2027. The idea is to start our journey by biking across the U.S. from July to December 2026. We’re thinking of leaving our bikes there and then traveling by public transport for 3 months in Central America down to Belize (during the U.S. winter). After that, we’d return to the U.S. and finish our trip by bike for about 4 more months.

We’ll need to apply for a B2 visa, but we’ve heard the conditions are for a 6-month stay. Depending on the border officers’ discretion, we *might* be allowed to re-enter the U.S. if we’ve left for a non-contiguous country for a while (which would be our case since we’d go as far as Belize). Has anyone here confirmed this? Have you been in this situation before, and is there a chance we might not be allowed back into the U.S. after leaving at the end of 2026?

Another question about the B2 visa interview. We’ve read it’s best to be transparent with the officer. Should we mention our full plan (including the trip to Belize and return to the U.S.), or should we only talk about the first part?

Hi there, I just applied for an ESTA since I’m leaving in February on MSC, and my request was approved. I just noticed I put “transit” (we arrive from France the day before and spend one night at the hotel before boarding) instead of “stay.” Does this matter, and I don’t know how to change it? A few weeks ago, my partner and I filled out the ESTA form, entering the address of a hotel in Chicago as our contact address in the USA since that was our planned destination. But in the meantime, we changed our minds about where we’re going in the States—we’ll be heading to California instead.

Will this be an issue when we arrive in the US? Or do they honestly not really care?

Hello, I’d like to hear from travelers (French nationals) who have a B2 visa (tourism) about their experiences. I read on the U.S. Embassy in France’s website that the B2 visa allows travel for up to 6 months (at the discretion of the immigration officer) within U.S. territory. It’s possible to renew the stay multiple times during the visa’s validity period.

If I understand correctly, I must leave the U.S. BEFORE the date stamped in my passport (or on the I-94 form) by the immigration officer upon entry.

What’s the minimum amount of time I should wait between two stays?

If I land in Washington (USA), travel to Halifax (Canada), stay in Canada until Calgary (Canada), visit Alaska (USA) for 2 months, and then re-enter the U.S. a few weeks later via Canada—how are "stays" and days counted?

I can’t find any official documents explaining how this counting works. From what I’ve heard from recent travelers, practices have changed in recent years. Is the counting left to the discretion of the immigration officer, or is there something less arbitrary I can rely on?
