Accommodation in Costa Rica
Location Map of Costa Rica
Overview of the Offer
Given the influx the country has experienced for some time now, it’s understandable that it has developed a diverse range of accommodations, generally of good quality or at least ready to meet the expectations of different types of visitors, particularly a North American audience.
You’ll find all kinds of hotels, including luxury ones, all-inclusive resorts, lodges, bungalows, homestays, and even campsites in some national parks. In short, there’s plenty of choice, often in abundance, though it’s best to book the best places during peak seasons like Christmas or Easter (along with the higher prices that come with them). That said, accommodation in Costa Rica is—or rather, has become in recent years—very expensive compared to other destinations in the region.
Hotels
High-End and All-Inclusive
You’ll find luxury establishments in the capital, along the Pacific coast, and even "off the beaten path" in nature or by the sea. While large hotels are common, charming or characterful lodges have also grown in popularity in recent years. As for all-inclusive resorts, they’re mostly found on the northwest coast in Guanacaste or the Nicoya Peninsula, catering primarily to a North American clientele. As always, it’s best to opt for package deals.
Mid-Range
In major cities and tourist spots, you can choose mid-range establishments accustomed to foreign visitors in terms of facilities and service. This range offers the best value, though you’ll need to budget around $35–40 for a double room to get a top pick.
Budget
This is typically what you’ll find for just under $20 for a double room, offering basic comfort and service. Dorm beds, especially in the few youth hostels, usually cost between $10 and $20.
Camping
Camping is primarily possible in a few national parks or nature reserves, at designated but often poorly equipped sites. Elsewhere, such as by the sea, you’ll find a few campgrounds, though they’re not always top-notch in terms of facilities. While you can usually get by for under $10 a night, it’s best to come prepared, especially during the rainy season. As for wild camping, it’s only moderately recommended due to the risk of theft. Alternatively, you can ask locals if you can camp on their property for a fee.
Other Options
Homestays
B&B-style or similar accommodations are available in the country. This option has grown, especially among European or North American residents, who generally offer quality stays at prices comparable to mid-range hotels.
Apartments and Villas
Which Accommodation to Choose?
Mid-range accommodations are the best bet, whether in the form of hotels or guesthouses.
