Accommodation in Mauritius
FR

Overview of the Offer

Thanks to its tourist vocation, Mauritius has a fairly substantial hotel sector for almost all budgets. Alongside the numerous luxury complexes or all-inclusive packages, there are also other, less high-end establishments that are often overlooked, as well as guesthouses, villas, and apartments or lodges. Given the small size of Mauritius (and Rodrigues), once you’ve chosen your accommodation, it’s best to keep it for the entire stay and explore the island from there each day.

Generally, mid-range and high-end accommodations tend to raise their prices during the high season, from November to January and, to a lesser extent, in August. Also note that there’s a 15% VAT on mid-range and high-end hotels (and restaurants) that isn’t always included in the displayed price.

Hotels

High-End and All-Inclusive

Mauritius has around a hundred hotels with a capacity of just over 10,000 rooms. Most are high-end and well-equipped (pools, spas, tennis courts, etc.) for tourist hotels. They’re logically found along the coast, particularly in the north, including around Grand Baie.

For those planning to stay in such establishments, it’s best to book everything before departure via all-inclusive packages, which are usually much more cost-effective than paying on the spot.

Local and Mid-Range Hotels

Mauritius also offers a range of local and mid-range hotels. While those in Port Louis mainly cater to a local clientele (especially business travelers), coastal hotels mostly accommodate vacationers with amenities and services tailored to them. Many offer half-board options.

If you’re not looking for luxury or all-inclusive, these accommodations offer good value for money, with plenty of double rooms available between 20 and 40 € per night, depending on the standard, location, or season.

Guesthouses

The guesthouse option is quite common in Mauritius, though the quality of accommodation varies widely. Since the activity often serves as supplementary income for families, anything is possible in terms of welcome, location, type of lodging, or comfort. Prices start at around a dozen euros for two, up to the equivalent of a mid-range hotel room.

Other Options

Youth Hostels

There are no youth hostels in Mauritius or Rodrigues.

Camping

There is no camping in Mauritius.

Lodges

Bungalows, Apartments, and Villas

For families or groups, Mauritius offers interesting options for renting bungalows (called "campements"), apartments, or even small villas at very affordable rates (even if...). They’re equipped and most have a kitchenette. Expect roughly 25 € per day at the lowest price for the smallest units, depending on the location.

In Rodrigues

Accommodation in Rodrigues differs from that in Mauritius. You’ll only find small-capacity establishments, as well as family-run guesthouses and B&Bs, which are actually the best option.

Which Accommodation to Choose?

If you’re not a fan of all-inclusive, opt for local mid-range hotels or, alternatively, guesthouses—especially in Rodrigues.
