Along with the capital, the Samaná Peninsula, and the Punta Cana region, the eastern Dominican Republic is the country’s most populous and tourist-heavy area, even if the north coast also draws its share of visitors. It’s also the part that best matches what many imagine when they think of the destination: long, beautiful beaches and countless all-inclusive resorts.

Main cities

This is the region of the capital, Santo Domingo, with its 3 million inhabitants, as well as other major urban areas like La Romana and Higüey, or much smaller but well-known visitor hotspots such as Las Terrenas, Boca Chica, and, of course, Punta Cana.

Tourist attractions

Cities and their heritage

Santo Domingo, with its UNESCO-listed colonial old town, is the undisputed highlight for historical heritage. Beyond the capital, however, the other cities themselves have little to offer in this regard.

Beaches and coastline

Sea, beaches, diving, water sports, golf, all-inclusive stays, parties, relaxation—these are the keywords for the region. In short, you’ll be spoiled for choice!

Nature and activities

Despite heavy tourism development, the region has still preserved stunning natural spaces, starting with Los Haitises National Park, which you can explore by boat, the islands of Catalina and especially Saona, now a must-visit for its beaches and diving. Not to mention the Samaná Peninsula, which has retained all its charm... and the whales in its bay for part of the year. Unsurprisingly, most activities in the region revolve around the sea.
