Flying to Mayotte
Location Map of Mayotte
General Information
Mayotte has only one airport, Dzaoudzi-Pamandzi, located on Petite-Terre. It receives flights from around half a dozen airlines connecting it to about twenty cities and serves as the hub for the local carrier Ewa Air.
Types of Flights
Mahorais Airlines
Mayotte has only one carrier, Ewa Air, which is the island's airline. Quite new, having been founded in 2013, it is a subsidiary of the Réunion-based airline Air Austral, its main shareholder. It operates a small regional network with just under ten destinations.
Charters, Scheduled Flights, Low-Cost, and Special Offers
The island is served only by scheduled flights. As for (real) airfare promotions, they are rare.
From France
Departing from Mainland France
Orly with Corsair and Roissy with XL Airways and Air Austral are connected to Mayotte in approximately 14 to 15 hours of flight time minimum. Except for Air Austral, which is direct, all these flights involve a stopover in Madagascar or Réunion. Prices: 800 to 1,150 €.
As for the provinces, only Marseille has a connection with the XL Airways flight from Paris, which makes a stopover there before continuing to Mayotte. For other cities, a transfer will be necessary, generally via Paris or occasionally Réunion.
Flights with Connections
Among the few existing options, flights with Air Madagascar (via Madagascar), Kenya Airways (via Nairobi), and especially Air Austral (via Réunion) are generally offered from mainland France. Note that the Air Austral ticket from mainland France to Mayotte via Réunion will always be much cheaper than two separate tickets: mainland France to Réunion plus Réunion to Mayotte.
Selection Criteria
Given the limited choice of airlines for this destination, options are quickly exhausted.
Departing from Réunion
Logically, there are flights between the two islands from Saint-Denis, operated by Air Austral. As is often the case in the Indian Ocean, the service remains expensive, with round-trip fares ranging from 300 to 400 €. If arriving from mainland France, it may be better to use the "Pass Îles Vanille" offered by Air Austral, which includes Mayotte.
From Another Country
Flight options are rather limited.
Belgium, Switzerland, Canada
No direct flights, so a connecting flight is required, particularly via Paris.
Other
Madagascar: Antananarivo (Air Madagascar); Antsiranana/Diego Suarez (Air Madagascar + Ewa Air); Majunga (Air Austral + Air Madagascar + Ewa Air); Nosy Be (Air Austral + Ewa Air).
Comoros: Anjouan (Ewa Air + Inter Iles), Moheli (Inter Iles); Moroni (Air Austral + Ewa Air).
East Africa: Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania) and Pemba (Mozambique) by Ewa Air; Nairobi (Kenya) by Kenya Airways.
Dzaoudzi-Pamandzi Airport
This is the island's only airport. It is located in the municipality of Pamandzi, on Petite-Terre.
- Name: Dzaoudzi-Pamandzi Airport
- IATA Code: DZA.
- Hub: Ewa Air.
- Number of terminals: 1
- Passenger capacity/year:
- Passenger traffic: 343,323 (2014)
- Distance from city center: 5 km from Mamoudzou.
- Website: http://www.aeroport-mayotte.com/
Services
Recently renovated and expanded, the airport now offers a fairly comprehensive range of services, including free Wi-Fi. It is open from 5:00 AM to 5:30 PM, depending on flight activity.
There are four car rental agencies at the airport, offering vehicle pick-up both on-site and on Grande-Terre. Note that transporting a vehicle on the barge between the two islands costs 15 € per trip. A paid parking lot with a capacity of 300 spaces is available at the airport.
Transport
There is a special fare for "airport" taxis that travel between the airport and the barge (in Dzaoudzi). The price is 5.60 € during the day and 8.40 € at night, on Sundays, and public holidays, regardless of the number of passengers. If you are staying on Grande-Terre and need to reach the airport, it is important to consider the barge schedule, which operates a crossing between Grande-Terre and Petite-Terre every half-hour (see chapter "Getting Around").
