Flying to Saint Barthélemy
General Information
Saint Barthélemy is one of those islands that only has direct flights to and from other islands in the region, with nothing beyond. This means visitors from North America or Europe must transit through these islands—primarily Saint Martin/Sint Maarten, which is just a few kilometers away and also has a ferry connection to Saint Barthélemy.
That said, the small Gustaf III Airport on Saint Barthélemy still handles a significant amount of traffic (despite its reputation for being aerially hazardous), with a few regular routes and charters or similar flights from the rest of the Caribbean. In 2014, it welcomed 171,000 passengers.
Types of Flights
Local Airlines
St Barth Commuter is the only airline based on the island. It offers regular flights to Saint Martin and Antigua, as well as a range of charters and on-demand flights to other islands in the region.
Charters, Scheduled, and Low-Cost Flights
Air traffic to Saint Barthélemy includes fewer than ten regular routes but around thirty charter and occasional services from the rest of the Caribbean, mostly operated by the local airline.
Promotions and Special Offers
From France (and Europe)
From Mainland France
There are no direct flights from France or Europe, which means a connection is required, particularly via the island of Saint Martin or Guadeloupe.
From the "French West Indies"
Saint Martin/Sint Maarten (with St Barth Commuter and Winair) and Guadeloupe (Air Antilles Express) are the only French overseas territories with direct flights to Saint Barthélemy. Without a connection, expect roughly 140 € round-trip to/from the former and at least 200 €–250 for the latter.
From the Rest of the Caribbean
Gustave III-Saint Jean Airport
Located in the village of Saint-Jean, Gustave III Airport is known as one of the most dangerous in the world for commercial flights due to its configuration. Its small size—just 650 meters of runway—means large and even medium-sized aircraft cannot land there.
