Baggage and Equipment to Bring

From spring to autumn, pack light clothing plus a sweater for evenings or air conditioning. In winter, mid-season clothes and rain protection will work in the delta (Cairo, Alexandria, etc.), while light clothing will suffice elsewhere in the country. In all cases, a sweater is also advisable everywhere. For the desert, sunglasses, sun protection, a hat, and optionally a *chèche* (local long scarf) are essential, especially against sandstorms. Since the country is predominantly Muslim, clothing covering legs and arms will be appreciated for women outside tourist areas.

Otherwise, a flashlight can be useful in the evening in poorly lit alleys or for desert nights, as well as earplugs (for the muezzin and other early-morning noises). If you opt for budget hotels, consider bringing a towel, toilet paper, and a lightweight sleeping bag liner for questionable bedding.
