Overview of the City

Founded in the 9th century and home to the world's oldest university, Fez (or Fez) enjoyed its golden age when it replaced Marrakech as the kingdom's capital. It remained the capital until 1912 and the French Protectorate. Today, the city is the country's third-largest and a major tourist destination, attracting over a million visitors annually, thanks in part to its UNESCO-listed medina since 1981.
