Things to Do in Madagascar
Location Map of Madagascar
Beaches and Beach Resorts

Madagascar has beautiful and even stunning beaches, but very few beach resorts given its hundreds of kilometres of coastline, which, admittedly, isn’t always easily accessible. The best places to enjoy the sea and its activities are mainly in the north, including, of course, Nosy Be and the island Saint Mary's Island, as well as Anakao in the southwest.
Water Activities
Deep-sea fishing: opportunities for big-game fishing, particularly around Majunga.
Diving: great spots and dive clubs around Nosy Be and Nosy Komba, Tuléar-Ifaty, Anakao, Sainte-Marie, or occasionally near Diego.
Water sports: sea kayaking, surfing, and kitesurfing are mainly practised in the north, around Diego Suarez/Antsiranana, and in the south, near Fort Dauphin/Tolanaro.

Hiking

Hiking
While not always the most spectacular, there are plenty of trekking opportunities, starting in the country’s national parks and reserves, where it’s even possible to hike for several days and camp. For anything beyond short walks, it’s highly recommended to go with a local guide or provider and to have or plan for at least basic equipment.
Cycling
Between the climate, distances, and road conditions, Madagascar isn’t an easy place for cycling or even mountain biking. Still, for those determined, bike rentals are available in tourist areas for pleasant rides. For those planning multi-day expeditions, the best and simplest logistical option is to contact local or international agencies specialising in such trips, either before departure or on-site.
Horseback Riding
There are a few opportunities, particularly around Antsirabe.
Outdoor and Adventure Sports
River Trips and Descents
While not strictly classified as "white-water" activities, multi-day descents of rivers like the Manambolo and especially the Tsiribihina, which flows into the Mozambique Channel, or scenic trips along the Pangalanes Canal offer great opportunities to discover landscapes and the villages along their banks.
For more sporty options, Madagascar also offers rafting and canyoning in the region west of the capital. Check with local providers.
Expeditions
Madagascar is a dream destination for expeditions, especially motorised ones. Local providers offer multi-day adventures by quad bike, motorbike, buggy, 4x4, or mountain bike for the more athletic.
Other Activities
For climbing enthusiasts, the Andringitra Massif in the centre of the country or the Montagne des Français near Antsiranana are equipped. Another form of climbing, "tree climbing," has also emerged in several forests, where it’s even possible to practise on baobabs.
Caving, particularly in the Ankarana Massif, as well as paragliding near Fianarantsoa, are also practised.
