This small rural state, 75% forested and very sparsely populated (only one city has more than 20,000 inhabitants), is perhaps one of the least known in the United States, at least abroad. Yet it has everything to delight nature lovers, ecotourists, and outdoor enthusiasts in both summer and winter, centered around two main sites: Lake Champlain and especially the Green Mountains, which also gave the state its nickname. It remains a prime nature-tourism destination for Americans from the East Coast.
