Portuguese City of El Jadida
FR
More precisely, the Portuguese city of Mazagan, which offers an exceptional testimony to the influences of European and Moroccan cultures over the past centuries.

Overview of the Portuguese City

It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004. In the early 16th century, it was one of the first settlements established in Africa by Portuguese explorers en route to India. It offers an exceptional example of the influences between European and Moroccan cultures from the 16th to the 18th century.

Within the ramparts, several Portuguese buildings are still visible, including the cistern, the Mazagan fortress, and the Church of the Assumption, built in the Manueline style. The most interesting of all is the Portuguese cistern, an underground reservoir whose vaults, supported by 25 pillars, are reflected in the water.
