Overview
Santorini Island
Akrotiri
In the south of the island, Akrotiri is an ancient Minoan city over 3,500 years old, where excavations have uncovered various ruins and artifacts displayed at the site or in the Prehistoric Museum of Fira. The present-day village is also charming, with its narrow streets, churches, and nearby beaches.

Fira
Also called Thira, this is the main town on the island and the most touristy. Perched on the cliffside, it is known for its typical architecture, narrow streets, its view (and sunset) over the Aegean Sea, its old port reached by 588 steps or by cable car, and its lively atmosphere. Fira also offers several museums, including the Museum of Prehistory.

Profitis Ilias Monastery
It sits atop the island (567 m), offering a lovely panorama of the surrounding area. Its access trails are popular with hikers, though you can also reach it by car.

Oia
Like Fira (but less touristy), this stunning cliffside village is famous for its magnificent sunsets and traditional architecture. Its two ports are also reached by long staircases.

Pyrgos Kallistis
This is a charming little village perched on the foothills of Mount Profitis Ilias and surrounded by vineyards. It consists of winding alleys lined with traditional white houses. From the top, you get a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding area.

Other Islands in the Archipelago
In addition to the nearly inaccessible islet of Aspronissi:
Nea Kameni
This uninhabited island features an active volcano that rises to 150 metres, giving it a lunar landscape with lava blocks and fumaroles. Access is only by organised tour (crowded in summer), though you can explore the island without a guide afterward.

Palea Kameni
This uninhabited volcanic islet (except for a small church) next to Nea Kameni is known for its hot springs with orange-hued waters. It’s a swimming stop on boat tours from Santorini.

Thirassia
A few villages and hamlets spread across 10 km² of arid and wild nature, offering a striking contrast with Santorini—the island is peaceful and barely touristy (including in its infrastructure). Yet you can enjoy beautiful walks, relax on its pebble beaches, visit old mines, and see around twenty small churches or monasteries.
