Bonjour ! moi aussi, car j'ignorais cet avantage. Je suis partie en comptant sur l'assurance de ma Mastercard...Mais voilà : il y avait plus de 3 mois que j'avais quitté la France et le dernier billet d'avion acheté l'avait été en Indonésie pour rejoindre Singapour où je devais être hospitalisée à cause d'un paludisme qui tournait mal parceque non soigné depuis 3 semaines. Mon fils m'avait rejointe et était malade lui aussi. Vu les frais qui m'attendaient, je pensais que mon tour du monde allait s'arrêter là. Et voilà que des amis conseillent à mon mari (resté en france) de se renseigner auprès de notre Assurance Auto...C'est là que nous avons appris qu'une toute petite cotisation était incluse dans notre contrat : 10 € par an pour l'Assistance à l'Etranger. Nous aurions même pu être rapatriés : ils nous l'ont proposé. Je pensais que ce privilège était réservé à ceux qui détenaient, en plus, une Assurance Habitation mais mon fils qui est affilié à une autre Assurance et uniquement pour sa vieille voiture, en "tièrce collision", a eu exactement les mêmes droits que moi.
Ils ont été super gentils et efficaces; un médecin français nous à appellés chaque jour pendant les 5 jours qu'a duré notre hospitalisation. En plus, les bureaux de Singapour ne voulaient pas nous laisser sortir sans nous faire AVANCER le paiement de la facture ! Je les ai appelés au secours et ils ont immédiatement envoyé un FAX garantissant le règlement et tout s'est bien terminé : je n'ai pas versé un seul centime.
J'ai appris par la suite que certaines Assurances cotisaient à un autre Groupe appelé "Inter Mutuelle Assistance" et c'est ce groupe, formé de différents médecins et autres qui s'occupent de nos problèmes de santé à l'Etranger. Ils n'ont jamais demandé à mon fils de tenter un remboursement Sécu donc j'en déduis que quelqu'un hors Sécu aurait pu en bénéficier ?? ça, c'est une supposition...
Ces 2 compagnies, celle de mon fils et la mienne sont très connues en France, il y a souvent leur pub à la Télé Voilà. J'espère t'avoir rassurée. Je suis à ta disposition pour plus de renseignements.

Je n'avais pas pris ma voiture pour mon voyage ! elle était restée en France avec mon mari; C'est pour ça que l'assurance était toujours en cours. quant à mon fils, lui aussi avait gardé son assurance auto malgré son absence de 4 mois. Mais je te précise que son hospitalisation à lui a eu lieu 2 mois après son départ.
Je ne sais pas si j'ai le droit de nommer ces Assurances sur le forum, je le tente : on verra : il s'agit de la MAAF pour moi et de la MATMUT pour mon fils.

🙂, Votre cas n'avait pas grand chose à voir avec ce qui est discuté ici puisque, votre mari, resté en France vous couvrait coté SS ce qui n'aurait pas été le cas si vous étiez partis tous les deux ou en famille.
Quand à votre fils son hospitalisation ayant eu lieu moins de six mois aprés son départ, le problème ne se posait pas non plus.
Par contre votre information est vraiment intéressante pour les personnes qui comme vous partent seules avec un conjoint, ou concubin qui reste en France et est immatriculé SS ou RSI( caisse des professions libérales )

La lecture de la note que je reprends en partie ci-dessus devrait pourtant être suffisante ; pour le reste, il y a des tribunaux administratifs pour ça. Le simple fait que la loi fasse mention d'année civile rend stupide leur interprétation.

La condition de résidence mentionnée à l’article R. 115-6 du code de la sécurité sociale peut être

– soit avoir le lieu de son séjour principal en France métropolitaine ou dans un DOM.
Le foyer s’entend du lieu où les personnes habitent normalement, c’est-à-dire du lieu de leur résidence
habituelle, à condition que cette résidence sur le territoire métropolitain ou dans un DOM ait
un caractère permanent. Le foyer est une notion objective et concrète qui doit être appréhendée à
partir d’un faisceau d’indices de toute nature économique, juridique, familiale, sociale voire affective
et qui atteste de la présence permanente et continue en France.
Ce foyer doit avoir en outre, un caractère permanent. L’exigence de la permanence de ce foyer en
France permet de distinguer ceux pour qui le territoire français constitue le lieu habituel de résidence
de ceux qui, même pour des durées pouvant parfois être importantes, ne séjournent que temporairement
ou ponctuellement en France, ne s’installent pas durablement en France et gardent leur
domicile principal à l’étranger.
A cet égard, doivent constituer des indices permettant la qualification d’un foyer permanent en
France, la personne qui exerce une activité professionnelle exclusivement en France, déclare fiscalement
ses revenus en France, dont les enfants fréquentent avec assiduité un établissement scolaire
en France ou a un engagement reconnu et stable dans des activités associatives de toute nature.
Le foyer est la première des conditions suffisante que l'on peut satisfaire pour être assuré social en France ; il n'y est en rien fait mention de cette affaire de 6 mois.
Cette affaire de six mois peut entrer en jeu pour la deuxième condition : avoir le lieu de son séjour principal en France métropolitaine ou dans un DOM. Et encore s'agit-il d'année civile.
je connais le texte de la loi, il me semble même que je le cite plus haut dans la discussion. C'est la raison pour laquelle, la personne que j'ai rencontré à la MAIF à Montpellier à bien souligné qu'en même temps que notre cotisation IMA nous payons une assistance juridique qui prendra le relais puisque les personnes rencontrées à la direction départementale de la sécu de l'Hérault, restent, elle, campées sur les fameux 6 mois.
L'essentiel est donc de faire le nécessaire pour rester dans le cadre de la loi c'est à dire de conserver une résidence principale en France incontestable Voilà. Pour le reste, je ne vais pas me prendre la tête et tenter de convaincre des gens qui ne veulent rien entendre, dans la mesure où, en cas de contestation il est sur qu'ils seront déboutés.

Vous avez bien raison ; mais je trouve que tenir sur VF les voyageurs informés de la loi et de leurs droits à la faire respecter est intéressant. Cela concerne pas mal de gens ici, autant qu'ils aient les armes.
C'est pourquoi je trouve que louer sa résidence principale pour partir un an est un peu risqué.
Pour ce qui est de Valébaluchon : plus haut aussi dans la discussion je donnais l'adresse mail de la CFE, Cotisation des Français à l'Etranger que je remets ici : courrier@cfe.fr
Si j'étais elle, je leur ferai un mail pour leur demander le montant de la cotisation qui est un % sur les revenus dont je ne me souviens plus . Ça vaut sans doute le coup de faire le calcul pour savoir s'il est plus intéressant de louer son domicile et de payer la cotisation CFE + une IMA ou bien de garder une résidence en France incontestable, quitte à ne pas louer . Mais bon, hein chacun voit midi à sa porte.

A la MAIF, c'est le lieu où vit l'assuré qui est couvert, donc sa résidence au sens large. Donc par exemple en location saisonnière pour les vacances, la MAIF te couvre là.
A mon avis et en bonne logique, tant que vous êtes résident fiscal en France, vous êtes couverts.
Ne pas confondre résidence fiscale et résidence effective.
Vous allez passer dans différents pays où vous ne serez pas résidents fiscaux bien entendu.
Donc vous serez considérés comme résidents fiscaux en France.

Tant que votre résidence principale est en France et ce, façon incontestable il n'y a aucun problème parce que, que je sache, les résidents français sont libre de circuler où ils veulent et pour la durée qui leur chante.
Si pour une raison quelconque vous ne pouvez pas faire la preuve que votre résidence principale est en France alors, il vaut mieux cotiser à la CFE parce qu'aucune mutuelle ou IMA ne vous prendra en charge si vous n'avez pas de couverture sociale.

L'assistance juridique à laquelle vous cotisez en même temps que vous prenez une IMA, n'agit pas pour vous défendre, vous, mais pour rentrer elle ( l'IMA ) dans ses fonds en se faisant rembourser la partie due par la Sécu puisque l'IMA en cas de problème vous aura déjà avancé les fonds qui vous auront été nécessaires. C'est donc une joute entre assurances dont vous serez peut-être le spectateur, mais qui ne vous affectera en rien.
Pour ce qui est de la CFE, personnellement, j'aime bien les contacts directs donc, lorsqu'ils m'ont retourné les imprimés me permettant de faire une simulation concernant mon cas, il y avait un N° de tél et le nom d'une personne à contacter, ce que je n'ai pas manqué de faire :
Réponse à la question pourquoi se préoccuper de cotiser à la CFE au bout de trois mois ?
1- Parce qu'il faut un certain temps pour mettre votre dossier en route et être sur que tout est en place au bout des 6 mois.
2- Parce qu'ils ne sont pas plus bêtes que d'autres et veulent s'assurer que vous cotisez normalement pour vous couvrir et pas juste au moment où vous rencontrez un gros problème de santé.
😛En référence à ma phrase signature, je pense qu'une des façon des plus courante d'être "à genoux" est de croire que "ils" nous veulent du mal, ou nous tromper délibérément. Il faut être vigilant certes mais aussi faire l'effort de connaître et comprendre les lois ou règlements auxquels nous sommes tous soumis.

Etant donné que je recherche une assurance type AVI mais en moins cher, si possible, j'ai bien pris soin de lire vos différents posts sur ce sujet. Très intéressants d'ailleurs. CatherineGil, je suis étonnée de lire que vous conseillez la CFE. En effet, ils parlent bien d'expatriés. Maintenant, il est vrai que j'ai cru lire que vous étiez en retraite. Donc, vous continuez à toucher une "pension" (je ne sais pas si on appelle ça toujours comme ça ...) et donc à cotiser à la SS. Alors que lorsqu'on est salarié et qu'on s'arrête pour faire un voyage, on n'a plus de revenus, donc plus de cotisation. Si en plus comme nous, nous vendons notre maison, nous n'existons plus pour la société française. Donc, plus de SS assez rapidement si j'ai bien compris vos différents posts sur la notion des 6 mois dans une année civile.
Donc, je pense que pour des personnes dites encore "actives", qui quittent leur travail et partent pour plusieurs années, j'ai bien peur que le choix soit très restreint. Voire unique.

I’m a teacher in Creuse, working in a ULIS program (which welcomes children aged 6 to 12 with disabilities into a mainstream school). This year, I’m starting a school journal project that will involve the kids in many different topics. A big part of the journal will focus on opening up to the world, diversity, travel, countries, culture...
I’m launching a call to invite as many of you as possible to send us a little postcard (from France or anywhere in the world!) to take us on a journey and help us discover new places, countries, and horizons—much more fun and exciting than a regular geography textbook! One section of our journal could be called "We received mail from " and would be an opportunity to research that location and share what we learn with our readers (a super enriching activity in class).
The project starts in September 2025 but has no real end date, as this journal and world discovery initiative will span several school years (the kids stay in my ULIS program for multiple years). Postcards can be sent anytime—throughout the year, across seasons, even during holidays! (The kids will find them when they return.)
I hope this idea appeals to as many of you as possible and that you’ll spread the word to your fellow traveler friends. Make us dream, take us on a journey!!!

I just discovered a great show on Arte.
It's called "7 en route": seven young European journalists travel around Europe in a fully converted bus, making reports on every city they visit. It's amazing! 🙂
Yesterday, for example, they were in Rome, Italy, and the reports included things like the world's smallest restaurant—a super romantic spot for two. There was also a report on the king of paparazzi in Italy.
They have to pick topics that let us discover the little quirks of each country. And at the end of each episode, we get to see the finished report.
It's such a great show, mixing journalism, travel, and discovery—basically, a must-watch!

After a quarter without dragging my slippers around here, even though I’d loudly declared I had no interest left in this site, here I am again!
My imagination never stays fallow for long. Just enough time for my inner land to rest. It gets overgrown with fresh nettles, the kind you can pick without getting stung. Then, it’s time to till the fragrant earth and let the story grow.
I hesitated over where to set this story.
Maybe the Highlands, maybe the Hebrides, maybe the Orkney Islands, maybe the Shetland Islands. All of Scotland is myth—easy to embroider.
But in the end, no. I’d almost be too afraid to bare my soul.
The story will take place at home. Simple, practical.

This morning, I was up well before dawn, feeling a bit grumpy, but nothing a bowl of coffee won’t fix. I love my bowl, and no one dares take it. It’s porcelain, edged with intertwined blue flowers. On the bottom, it says "Revol." The factory has existed long before the Revolution. It was my great-grandmother’s bowl. She drank roasted barley from it during the war, then her Leroux chicory.
Last year, a little guy dropped it. My bowl broke into three pieces. A black anger vibrated deep inside me. The little boy was so upset, on the verge of tears. How could I scold him!
I picked up the three pieces and took Little Boy in my arms. His hair smelled of the light, sweet sweat of toddlers. A gentle hug that healed—his budding sorrow and my anger—everything vanished, and time carried on.
Today, my bowl is even prettier. Man fixed it using the traditional kintsugi technique, except he didn’t use gold powder or lacquer but superglue, and he delicately painted the cracks with woad blue. And my bowl is even more beautiful now.
I’m lingering, I can tell—it’s just that a story wraps itself in life, and life can’t be told in the snap of a finger. Life is long. Like in architecture, you start with a rough sketch, called a "sous-cul" (the initial pencil drawing), then you make a tracing, which is the work itself, the one you later carefully roll up in a wooden tube.
Life is like that: you erase, you start over, you use the nub of the pencil until it’s tiny, but you keep going—dreaming, loving.

Nepal, much like Tibet and Bhutan, is deeply connected to the Himalayas—the ultimate sacred mountain range. This small country exudes a calming vibe, shaped by a strong spiritual dimension. What I loved most was the unique sensory experience you get there. Walking around temples and tantric monasteries, a distinct scent fills the air—aromatic plants used for ritual fumigation. Locals mainly burn Himalayan juniper, cedar, sandalwood, and other local essences. This fragrant smoke is a way to purify the space and reach the deities, and you’re constantly enveloped in these aromas.
Another striking aspect is the sound. As soon as you step outside, you hear bells ringing in front of temples. People ring them three times before praying to announce their presence to the deities. Nepal is also the birthplace of singing bowls and sound meditation practices. In Kathmandu, you can easily find meditation sessions or "sound baths."
The spiritual dimension is everywhere: a Hindu sadhu practicing asceticism, a lama in deep red robes with his mala, turning a prayer wheel while murmuring "Om mani padme hum." Newar Buddhism, Tantrism, and Hinduism coexist harmoniously in daily life.

I’m planning a 3-week trip to Japan in May with Voyage Privé. The package includes a 5 GB eSIM, but my phone isn’t new enough to support it. VP told me I could buy a SIM card when I arrive at the airport.
Sure enough, I’ve seen online that this is possible with different providers.
I only need it for checking routes, looking up addresses, train schedules, etc.—basically using Google Maps, TripAdvisor, and similar apps. No heavy downloads or major internet use. All hotels should provide free Wi-Fi for that, right?
Has anyone got any tips for me on this? What have you tried, and how much did it cost?

I wanted to share a really unpleasant experience from our last trip booked with Promoséjours and organized by FTI.
We booked an 8-day/7-night stay in Egypt, from June 8 to 15.
The flight initially scheduled was changed a week before departure to take off at 10 PM from Paris CDG.
In the end, it took off with a 1-hour delay and included an unmentioned stopover in Marsa Alam.
We landed in Hurghada at 4 AM and arrived at the hotel at 6 AM.
So, we spent our first night on the plane.
For the return trip, surprise—the flight was moved up. We left the hotel at 10:30 PM on Friday the 14th to take off at 2 AM and land at 7 AM at Paris CDG.
So, we spent our last night on the plane too.
After sending a complaint letter to Promoséjours / FTI, they replied that the first and last days can be dedicated to transport (which I already knew) and that no matter how many nights you book, you’re not guaranteed to spend them in the hotel—it could just as well be on the plane.
I’m really questioning this.
Isn’t there a law that protects customers in cases like this?
Because when I do the math, the first and part of the second day were spent on transport, same for the second-to-last and last day. And I paid for 7 nights for a stay that only lasted 5.
Anyway, I just want to say thanks to them—thanks to their two sleepless nights in transit, I’m coming back even more exhausted from a trip that was supposed to be restful!
I also want to warn anyone booking through this agency about visas for Egypt.
At booking, they told me the visa was included in the price, then they sent me an email saying I’d have to pay for it on-site at 25 €.
Once there, we were directed to a special line for FTI customers, and guess what? They charged us 30 €!
Basically, they’re great at making sure you *enjoy* your vacation—mostly by enjoying your wallet!
If anyone has dealt with this kind of situation and won their case, I’m all ears.

So I thought I’d get a Thai SIM card to use Google Maps for getting around cities, mostly.
Here’s my question: will this SIM affect my apps? Or will they work the same as with my Orange SIM?
Is there any setup I need to do, or can I just pop in the Thai SIM?
I’d also like to switch back to my Orange SIM now and then while I’m in Thailand—on the same phone. Will I need to reset the phone, or will it reconnect without any issues?

I’m reaching out to all travelers and globe-trotters on this forum. I’m a teacher in Creuse working in a ULIS program (which welcomes children aged 6 to 12 with disabilities into a mainstream school). This year, I’m launching a school journal project that will involve the kids in many different topics. A big part of this journal will focus on opening up to the world, embracing differences, travel, global cultures, and more.
I’m putting out a call to invite as many of you as possible to send us a postcard (from France or anywhere in the world)! The goal is to help us "travel" and discover new places, countries, and horizons in a way that’s much more fun and exciting than a geography textbook. One section of our journal could be called "We received a letter from ," where we’d research the location and share what we learn with our readers—a really enriching activity for the classroom.
The project starts in September 2025 but doesn’t have a strict end date, since this journal and world-discovery initiative will span several school years (the kids stay in the ULIS program for multiple years). Postcards can be sent anytime—throughout the year, across seasons, even during holidays! The kids will find them when they return.
I hope this idea appeals to as many of you as possible, and that you’ll spread the word to your fellow travelers. Help us dream and explore!
