J'ai vu qu'au retour à LA, vous étiez passés par Seligman, et à voir la belle photo avec le panneau de la "mother road" je suppose que vous vous êtes fait la boucle Seligman-Kingman en quitant une partie de la I-40, alors cette route elle est comment?
On compte la faire mais dans l'autre sens, en partant de LA ( ca sera notre 1er jour sur le sol américain 😇) faire une halte à Kingman, puis passer donc par la 66 jusqu'à Seligman mais comme elle n'est pas indiquée sur google map, je ne sais pas si ça rallonge beaucoup...
on rencontre sa destinée souvent par des chemins qu'on prend pour l'éviter...
Salut! La personne d'Alamo qu'à eu la femme de l'accueil du Goulding's n'avait pas l'air de connaître Monument Valley non plus 😏 .
Tiens faudrait monter un club des "pneus crevés" dans l'Ouest 😎 Je vous rassure car avec Avis, le gars au téléphone ne savait absolument pas où se trouvait Death Valley. J'ai toujours pensé qu'on tombait sur un "call center" en Inde ou je ne sais où ... et que les mecs, hormis qq grandes villes, sont paumés dès qu'on sort des grands axes.

Salut Virginath, content que ton voyage t'ai plu, j'ai été très content de voir que tu avais su apprécier le Downtown malgré le côté crasseux. Surpris que tu ai "flashé" sur Broadway, c'est ma partie favorite (entre 2nd et 9th, et les rues adjacentes).

Il y a des portions en sable qui sont amusantes et d'autres avec pas mal de cailloux... En fait c'était le soleil couchant et avec la poussière et le soleil dans le pare-brise je savais plus trop où je roulais et le pneu avant droit a pris un caillou de côté, j'ai entendu "pschiiiittttttttt". En 3 secondes il était complètement dégonflé! Et là je me suis dit "oh meeeerdeeee"..... 😕
moi je n'as pas le même ressenti sur le ruby's inn de bryce. pour nous ce fut super au niveau de la chambre. nous étions cinq et avions une suite familiale de 2 chambres ce qui nous a permis pendant 2 jours de ne pas être les uns sur les autres. nous avons aussi fait notre première lessive et les enfants ont aimé les deux piscines dont l'une couverte. c'est sûr que c'est un grand complexe mais bien agréable avec tout ce qu'il faut. nous avons pris un jour à midi le buffet à volonté au restaurant et là super surprise, ce fut délicieux avec un choix de viandes et d'accompagnements impressionnants cuisine locale pour 11 dollars il me semble.
concernant le bryce view lodge, il fait partie du même complexe mais les chambres sont plus petites et pour nous, obligation de prendre deux chambres donc finalement plus cher.
c'était juste pour donner un autre point de vue pour ceux qui iraient au ruby's inn; super bien placé à l'entrée du parc, ce qui a son importance vu les km.
Cécilou : vraiment ne te sent pas attaqué par ma réponse, ne ne fait que l'utiliser pour illustrer le fait que chacun doit savoir s'il est plus proche de tel ou tel VFiens avant de prendre ses recommandation au pied de la lettre
Pour ceux qui lisent VF sans oser participer et avec l'intention de se faire un avis définitif ... bon courage car VF abrite autant de diversité que dans la vraie vie 🙂🙂, pour preuve :

Par principe je me tiens le plus éloigné possible des buffets des complexes touristiques
je ne me sens pas attaqué du tout, le tigre. je voulais juste recadrer. avec 3 ados tu es obligé de penser lessive (2 valises pour 5) , piscine, sortir des fast food mais pas trop cher et place pour que cela ne soit pas un enfer. c'est ce qui a permis à chacun de profiter même de la piscine et de passer des vacances inoubliables. il faut composer avec les envies de chacun.
je parlais pour les familles de plus de 4 qui cherchent un motel près de bryce ce qui n'est pas simple.

Nous sommes allés de Williams à Seligman par la 40. Nous sommes sortis à Seligman pour voir le tronçon de Route 66, puis nous avons repris la 40 jusqu'à Kingman. Donc nous n'avons pas pris la portion dont tu parles. Je n'étais pas tentée par ce que j'avais lu sur Peach Springs and co, mais certains adorent ! Par contre, à Kingman, nous avons pris la 66 jusque Oatman (longue ligne droite vallonnée en assez mauvais état, puis montée d'un col, avant d'arriver à Oatman, un tout petit village far-west. Etonnant !).

Itat a vraiment joué de malchance, le pauvre 😕. La piste de Monument Valley m'a semblée très roulante (surtout après ce qu'on avait connu !). Mais peut-être qu'un 4x4 a des pneus plus solides ? Appel aux connaisseurs ? 😛

Oui, j'ai adoré Broadway. Ces vieux théâtres, ces enseignes d'une autre époque, cette architecture art déco, un étrange sentiment de passé glorieux mais poussiéreux aussi... J'aurais pu y passer des heures à traquer le moindre détail. C'est sûr, j'y retournerai.

En fait, j'en attendais exactement la même chose que toi (hormis les chambres communicantes), puisque je voyage avec un enfant. C'est ce qui m'avait fait choisir cet hôtel, plutôt que de loger dans le parc.
Mais entre la péripétie "on nous donne la clé d'une chambre déjà attribuée" (très rassurant !), la baignoire qui craque et le frigo qui couine, le resto où la file d'attente n'avait rien à envier à celle de la Tour Eiffel, le snack à côté crasseux... et la piscine (il y en a 2 ???) où nous n'avons pas eu le temps de plonger un orteil (mais ça, c'est de notre faute), ben, bof quoi 😉. Le manque de soleil n'a pas aidé mon humeur, c'est sûr. Puis 159 dollars, je trouve ça très cher, pour une chambre aussi basique.

je comprends tes sentiments vu les péripéties. C'était quel jour ? nous, c'était du 24 au 26 juin. Personne au Check inn et out. La chambre était impeccable. Par contre, j'avais oublié, la fille s'était trompée entre la clé de la chambre et le numéro entouré sur le plan.
Il y avait bien 2 piscines une dehors côté camping (pas testé, il fait froid le soir à bryce), et une intérieure que les enfants ont apprécié; moi non trop de bruit.
Pour le rodéo, c'était sympa mais trop long à mon goût et surtout j'ai eu trop froid. Impressionnant, l'hymne avant le spectacle et rigolo les gamins sur les moutons. (vidéos dans le blog).
Pour le resto, avons juste testé le buffet; il n'y avait aucune queue mais c'était à 3PM.
C'est vrai que c'est rageant le prix pour une météo médiocre et une chambre minable.
cela m'a énervé aussi à yosémite où pas fait les séquoias géants à cause du choix de l'hôtel, très cher et mal placé sur mon itinéraire, mais parcontre la chambre super.
Ah oui, effectivement, la piscine du camping ! Nous l'avons vue en allant au parc. Merci de me le rappeler ! Nous y étions le 1er juillet.
Le rodéo était un peu long, c'est vrai. Mais on voyait tellement qu'ils faisaient ça par passion que c'en était attendrissant je trouve. Moi aussi j'y ai attrapé froid. Le mal de gorge carabiné, pendant la nuit... ce qui a évidemment exacerbé ma sensibilité au bruit du frigo et mon mécontentement 🤪😇
Je n'ai pas encore eu le temps de parcourir ton blog avec l'attention qu'il mérite, mais cela ne saurait tarder ! En tout cas, je t'admire d'avoir réussi à le tenir à jour ! Nous, c'était la galère chaque jour pour Internet, moralité, je me suis à peine connectée 2 ou 3 fois et encore, juste pour envoyer des mails aux grands-parents soucieux de leur progéniture (le petit, pas nous 😇)

Ceci dit en juin 2008 pour l'itinéraire que tu as faites les temperatures étaient trés fortes..
Effectivement la shafer trai a été pour nous aussi un grand moment et le détour par musselmam arche un bon souvenir.
J'aurais bien tenté Musselman Arch et le White Rim, mais quand on pense que mari a décidé sur un coup de tête de faire le Shafer Trail parce qu'il était midi, qu'il avait faim et que, sur la carte, c'était un "raccourci" 😛 ... on a mis directement le cap sur Moab... où on est arrivés presque 3 heures plus tard ! 😇

et tout d'abord, je ne vais pas être original, mais félicitations pour ce résumé, et merci pour toutes ces infos pratiques.
Nous partons le 28 juillet, et arrivons à 12h40 à LA, et récupérrons la voiture chez Alamo à partir de 15h (j'ai bien noté le coup de l'inscription sur internet).
C'est à parti de ce moment là que j'ai des doutes, jusqu'au moment ou nous allons quitter LA.
L'agence est elle simple à trouver ?
Et deuxièmement, en récupérant la voiture, disons à 16 heures, pourrons nous faire quelques visites sommères (plus sommères que ton compte rendu 😛) du genre Hollywood blv, malibu...avant la fin de la journée, pour pouvoir ensuite, tôt le lendemain matin, attaquer par Warner Bros ou les studios, et avoir le temps de se "promener dans LA ?
Et encore bravo pour le cr, et les émotions que l'on ressent en regardant tes photos.

L'agence Alamo est très facile à trouver puisqu'en fait, il suffit de grimper dans une navette Alamo/National à la sortie de l'aéroport, et celle-ci t'y emmène. Quant à savoir si tu auras le temps de faire quelques visites sommaires... tu peux lire ce que j'ai écrit ci-dessus à Ombelline. A priori, tout dépendra de ton état de fatigue (c'est quand même un long voyage, ne l'oublions pas ! Et il sera 1 heure du matin pour ton horloge biologique), et il ne faut surtout pas oublier que LA, c'est grand, et que les différents quartiers sont reliés par des autoroutes de 5, 6, 7 bandes, où la circulation sera très chargée vers 16h/17h, sans parler des embouteillages, et qu'il faut rester très attentif. Personnellement, je ne suis pas sûre que ce soit la meilleure entrée en matière. Et le lendemain matin, toujours a priori, vous serez réveillés super tôt, bien avant l'ouverture des studios...

J'aurais aimé avoir une adresse précise à entrer dans le GPS mais je n'avais que ma carte Google Maps qui avait très bien trouvé avec rien que "Angelino Heights", mais madame GPS était plus pointilleuse et voulait une rue. Vu l'avancement de la journée, on a malheureusement dû faire une croix dessus.

En revanche, je commence à m'inquiéter par rapport au Ruby's inn: j'avais déjà cru comprendre (feedback de Vnoa, je crois) que cet hôtel n'était pas top...

On a été au Ruby's Inn en mai : on avait un peu peur aussi de "l'usine à touristes"... déjà si tu peux, prends une chambre dans les bâtiments Elk View Lodge ou Lake View Lodge qui se trouvent à l'écart de la route et près d'un petit lac... rien à dire de spécial, la chambre était bien et c'était calme... nous n'avons pas dîner ni petit déjeuner sur place ... mais on s'est offert les repas au Bryce Canyon Lodge (diner un peu "cher", petit déj pas trop, mais franchement on y a super bien mangé !)... le Ruby's Inn est vraiment à l'entrée de Bryce Canyon (moins de 10 min pour aller à Sunrise ou Sunset Point) ...
Bref, faut pas non plus s'en faire une montagne du Ruby's Inn... un BW où il y a un peu de monde (mais on n'a pas trop poireauté pour enregistrer et avoir une chambre alors qu'on n'avait pas réservé)... par contre, niveau repas, on avait déjà testé l'espèce de self à côté et c'était bof bof... donc cette fois, on s'est fait plaisir au Bryce Canyon Lodge (réservation conseillée en haute saison) et c'était plutôt bon !

Vnoa, justement, j'avais tenu compte de ton conseil: j'avais envoyé un mail au Ruby's Inn leur demandant de réserver de préférence notre chambre dans le Lake View Lodge ou l'Elke View Lodge:
Ils m'ont répondu qu'ils ne pouvaient rien garantir en raison de l'affluence à cette date🙁
Donc, dans le doute, (et de peur de tomber sur une chambre avec une baignoire "qui craque" ou un frigo qui couine), j'ai préféré annuler, mais j'ai eu de la chance (grâce à Capfaval🙂) d'avoir trouvé une chambre au Best Western Grand Hotel😎
(Les autres étaient effectivement tous Sold Out🙁 y compris à Tropic)

Je te rassure la White Rim road jusqu'a Musselman Arch c'est du meme niveau que la Shafer Trail. C'est aussi casse-cul.
Pourquoi ne pas avoir fait la descente de la Shafer Trail puis la White Rim jusqu'a Musselman Arch et revenir sur la Shafer Trail/Potash Road et l'arrivée sur Moab ?

Vu la moyenne horaire, ça aurait rajouté encore une bonne heure au périple... Le shafer trail n'était pas prévu au programme, on devait rentrer bien sagement par la route normale, et le lendemain, faire un tour en 4x4 avec Tag-a-long. Ben finalement, on l'a fait nous-mêmes (on les a d'ailleurs croisés !)

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
We found Emmanuelle and Isabelle, and wow, they were fantastic. It was just the two of us with them, so it was a truly VIP, ultra-personalized experience. The service was really personalized. They adapted to our pace and preferences, and we could stop whenever we wanted to take photos. It’s the luxury of being in a small private group—you’re not just a number on a big bus.
In short, we really felt like we were traveling with friends rather than professional guides. Everything’s included in the price (hotel pickup, meals, park entries, etc.), so the value for money is fair.
We loved it so much that we’re already planning to come back next year to explore other areas with them. I think we’ve caught the American West bug—it’s all we can think about, and we can’t wait to return.
