I got what I wanted and I wanted what I got, 🙂

I feel the same way thanks to this theme bringing such great diversity... which makes the choice particularly tough. I went back and forth so many times, and I’m still wiped out—now I’m in a real pickle trying to pick just three...

3 points Ming2-1, Cuba Oddly enough, it was the first entry in the contest. I loved the contrast/opposition of shapes (arches, towels), their regularity/alignment, the worn-down mixed with the clean, not to mention the colors.

2 points Jemaflor-3, Croatia Same here—regularity/alignment, plus the framing and the action of the lone figure.

1 point Raggamuffin-1, India Here, it’s all about the angle.

A good twenty other photos could’ve made this podium. I take comfort in knowing the next voters will pick them for sure. Good luck with the vote, and thanks for making the world a little cleaner... if not more equal!

Hello everyone, Great theme where the laundry was kindly done as a family. Choices were, as usual, really tough. 3 points🙂🙂🙂: Pierre-1 I really loved this harmony of red and white, even the clothespins😉

2 points🙂🙂: Carassou-2 Beautiful scene, lovely colors. 1 point🙂: Taamaden-2 This woman is stunning and truly deserves recognition. The zinc washtub, the washboard—it’s all part of a tradition. My back hurts just thinking about it...
MO Mong1 Globetrotter ·
Hi everyone,

What a great theme—it really matches everything I love: everyday life scenes, a sense of simplicity, and images full of color (or white!). I’m really surprised I’ve never seen this topic, which is so photogenic, in the usual photo contests, websites, or forums... someone had to think of it! 🙂

My vote ("delicate wash" program, or even mission impossible): I would’ve loved to highlight more everyday scenes, but here we go...

- Pierre, photo 2 (Cambodia): 3 pts For the mix of lines, shapes (the two buoys at the bottom, the hanging laundry), and colors... a perfect framing and balance!

- Fabt, photo 2 (Laos): 2 pts For the orange robes of the monks against that yellow wall—a typical Laos image that exudes serenity.

- Kate, photo 2 (Alghero, Sardinia): 1 pt For the finesse and overall aesthetic of this photo (even if I find the laundry a bit subtle for the theme).

For second and third place, I hesitated with the photos from Ragamuffin 1 (India) and Vazyvite 3 (the iconic and colorful Burano)...

I also loved: Marifb (Cambodia 1, Zanskar 2, and Sulawesi 3) - Eversmile 1 (India) - KaniBé 1 (Myanmar) and 3 (Burkina) - Jemaflor 1 (Burano) and 3 (Croatia), and others...

You're up before everyone again! 😉

I resisted the temptation to abstain and tossed these into the spin cycle: Eversmile-2, Ragamuffin-1 for the timely dive (but what’s that Italian flag doing there?), CatherineGil-1, Fabt-2, Jemaflor-3, Marifb-3, Gaura-2, Wsns-2 for the suggestion, Ming2-2 & 3, Pierre-1&2, Kate’s paintings-1&2, Attila-3, and then, unfortunately, it was full.

When the drum stopped, a few flourishes, some knots, and some corks. Above the basket: Pierre-1 (3pts) Ragamuffin-1 (2pts) Eversmile-2 (1pt)

Good evening.

First vote in a long time for me.

3 points for Maya's #1. Fits the theme perfectly, colors and composition I like... more than the framing.😉 2 points for Wsns's #1. Fits the theme well, the washhouse, the reflections... I'm sold. 1 point for Ming2's #1. Fits the theme well, I loved the soft freshness vibe, the contrasts: between outdoor and indoor light, between the colorful peeling walls and the spotless laundry garland.

So many beautiful photos to illustrate your original theme, Kola. Well done. And no controversies or airing dirty laundry!!! Well done to everyone.

See you around.

Good evening everyone,

Simple as that—a great theme guarantees a great contest... I really love a theme taken straight from daily life (see Ming2’s comment too). Everywhere, people do laundry, and laundry doesn’t wash itself... Here’s my vote:

3 points: Carassou no.2 (Malawi)

2 points: Kate no.1 (Spain)

1 point: Pierre no.1 (Montenegro)

I also liked (more or less in this order): Ming2 no.2 (India), Jemaflor no.1 (Italy), Vazyvite no.3 (Italy), Kate no.2 (Italy), Ragamuffin no.1 (India), Carassou no.1 (Malawi), KaniBé no.3 (Burkina Faso), Mamina64 no.2 (Mali), Elhine no.3 (Senegal), Xrctn no.1 (France), Maya83400 no.1 (Italy), Lacalo no.2 (Morocco), Kate no.3 (Morocco), Elefantaisie no.2 (India), CatherineGil no.1 (Senegal), and many others... Stunning photos!

Good luck!

I also got stumped by Ming 2, Eversmile 1, Maya 1, Raga 1, Pierre 2, Lulumae 1, Kate 1, Ming 3, Vazyvite 1, Pierre 1...

Pleasantly surprised by the variety of entries. Super 😎

Ming2 - Photo 1: The most beautiful clothesline 😎😎😎

Jemaflor - Photo 3: Great framing and the person at just the right moment 😎😎

Mamina64 - Photo 3: I really like the two levels of depth 😎

PS: Too bad about Kate’s Photo 1 from Spain—the framing bothered me a bit with the underwear on the left. If it had been cropped to just the orange towel and the two color stripes, it would’ve really caught my eye for a purer "colorist" effect. 😛 Just my personal opinion!

Hi everyone,

What a great theme this month! While the first two were clear favorites, choosing the third photo was really tough! Five photos were neck-and-neck, but I had to make a decision... Here’s my vote:

3 points Ming2 - 1 No hesitation here—this one’s a true favorite. Everything about this image is stunning! The colors, the light, that gorgeous crumbling palace, and those perfectly aligned towel garlands. I love how it reimagines a historic place... 😉 Absolutely adore it!

2 points Ming2 - 2 Wow, what a photo! I’m surprised it hasn’t been mentioned more in this contest, but I think the vertical framing works against it since the photos aren’t enlarged as much. It’s timeless—I bet this exact scene could’ve been captured centuries ago... The laundry in the foreground, the hazy palaces in the background, the boat—it looks like a painting!

1 point Ragamuffin -1 I really love this bird’s-eye view, especially with the washerwomen all in the same pose! The green water in the background adds a pop of energy to the photo.

For third place, I could’ve also picked: -Pierre 1, for the angles, -Pierre 2, for the colors, -Catherinegil 2, for the framing, -Kate 1, for the play of lines, colors, and shadows, -and Mamina 1, for the humor (like Nikk 1’s—it’s really a minimalist laundry day per week! 😮) So many other photos caught my eye too!

My votes

Ming2 Photo No.1 🙂🙂🙂 It stuck in my mind throughout the whole contest 🙂

Pierre Photo No.1 🙂🙂 I really love Pierre’s style and vibes!

Raga Photo No.1🙂 Love the washerwomen (not the washing machines😉 ) and that big white sheet in the foreground.

P.S.: For some reason I don’t understand—and probably because I’m not doing what I should—I have to resize the images I copy/paste into the slideshow to the dimensions VF wants. It’s...annoying! 😠

Hi there, here’s my vote. Ugh, not easy...

Pierre, photo 3, 3 points For the simplicity, the framing, the white of the shutters and the laundry. And also to avoid upsetting Pyrene, who discovered how much I love those big briefs 😛

Jemaflor, photo 3, 2 points For the original framing (or reframing?), the composition, the photogenic crumbling wall, and the discreet but essential presence of the woman.

Ragamuffin, photo 1, 1 point For the women’s poses and the color balance. But only 1 point because of that big white sheet that slightly disrupts the balance.

So many beautiful shots, but none really blew me away. I loved the composition and balance of Ming’s photo 1, though the highlights are too blown out. I also liked Pierre’s photo 1—great eye for the matching colors! Fab’s black-and-white photo 1 is nice too. Eversmile’s photo 1 is fun. Attila’s photo 2 fits the vibe of the top two on my podium. Jemaflor’s photo 1 for the vibrant colors, and Lacalo because I love the chaos among those satellite dishes 😉 There are others, but I won’t comment on all of them!

Is the choice harder when you organize the contest, propose a theme... and then receive photos like so many postcards from around the world personally addressed to you?

Probably, because it’s tough for me to pick just three from this burst of color.

I loved all these images, including the ones posted off-topic... photos that echo from one country to another and naturally come together in sub-themes: -beautiful portraits of women, bent over or crouching... -urban laundry, beach laundry, and field laundry—the clothes hanging from windows and those fluttering in the wind. -scenes by the river or stream, often shot from a low angle. -graphic images, lovely reflections, beautiful black-and-whites. -clothes hanging, clothes spread out on the grass, sand, steps...

These photos of timeless, universal gestures—images captured *in the midst of life*, life as it flows, sometimes daily, busy, and peaceful...

I’m touched that the theme inspired you beyond my expectations.

Mamina64-3 ... 3 points

Eversmile-3... 2 points

Jemaflor-3...1 points

Special mention to Ming2-1, who won’t need me to say more...

Good evening Kola! 🙂

For my first participation 😛 in VF’s international photo contest, the repeated careful viewing, pre-selection, and final decision were as exhausting as the soaking, pre-washing/washing, and spinning involved in "that ancestral and universal activity, traditionally left to one half of humanity while the other leaves their dirty laundry lying around!"

In other words, choosing the top three for "Best Wash of the Month" was just as tough as past contests 😛. Here’s the lineup (the trophy names aren’t a sneaky ad violation 🙁, just saying in case Longtarin’s watching… ):

Gold Super-Croix to Pyrene64-n°3 (3 points): (Yes, it’s photo #3… just mentioning for Minala’s vote )

… because this photo whisked me away on a journey of imagination (but not for the unintentional "permutative wordplay" in Elhine’s cheeky little comment above about that same invitation)

Silver Saponite to Fabt84-n°1 (2 points):

… a stunning profile, the understated elegance and simplicity of good old black and white—something most of us have almost forgotten! 😕 (Except for real photographers, of course… or what’s left of them!)

Bronze Bonux to Marifb-n°1 (1 point):

… for that timeless Cambodian blue and sky that pulled me right in…

Final applause to the curator of this exhibit, and a big congrats in advance to future winners! 🙂
