Hi Agnes!

Thanks again for this new travel journal. I need to go back and read it from the start to really soak it all in.

The country really draws me in, but I’m a little worried about the tourist crowds. It’s great that you chose to rent a car and shared your experience.
AT Attila Globetrotter ·
Hi Pascale,

By avoiding Phuket, Koh Samui, and Phi Phi and renting a car, I think we can still really enjoy this lovely country.

Also, by doing fewer organized tours if the budget doesn’t stretch, and opting for just one private excursion instead.

Just so you know, the trip was made at the end of the high season, so not at peak crowds.

Definitely avoid, in my opinion: Christmas holidays and Chinese New Year...

I think with climate change, you can never be sure of anything anymore. 🤪

I had amazing weather in May in Krabi even though it wasn’t the right season. This year, it was supposed to be the dry season, but the blue skies weren’t always there...

Before, I’d go in January, and it was always that perfect blue.

Hi Pascale,

This "issue" seems to be a big concern for travelers. (Agnès, you’re gonna say: "again!" ) France welcomed 100 million tourists in 2024. Okay, sure, the Olympics were on. But other years, it’s around 80 million. Our country is the most visited in the world. Yet, living in France, I can easily get away from the crowds or adjust my schedule if I visit a popular spot. Of course, overtourism can be criticized, but that’s another debate. I think you’ll manage to handle it just fine 😉

That’s a really insightful point worth remembering. Obviously, aside from the most touristy spots in each country, which are packed every day of the year. A tip for Thailand: June is off-season and statistically one of the driest months...

You're absolutely right. I have no doubt that one day I'll set foot on Thai soil. Agnès and Joël’s travel journals really show everything the country has to offer. And I really connected with the Asian continent—it’s such a change of scenery. I’ll just have to work around the schedules since I can only travel during school holidays.

The real question is *when*, since the list of trips I want to take is so long

Since I’m squeezing my Thailand trip between two stays in India, I don’t have a choice—it’ll be between January and February again this year... But after everything I’ve just read—and seen—here and from my own experience, outside of Bangkok where I didn’t find too many foreigners, I’m wondering if I shouldn’t head to Cambodia or Vietnam instead? Especially if the visa exemption is reduced to just one month... For those who still don’t get it, I’ll say it again: I don’t have anything against tourists *per se*, except when they become so overwhelming that it becomes unbearable. When they outnumber the locals and everything set up to entertain them comes at the expense of local life, it loses its appeal for me.

For Thailand, maybe you should’ve headed toward Isan and the area between Bangkok and Surat Thani (avoiding Hua Hin and Cha-Am) to get a bit farther from tourists (though not necessarily from expats).

It’s definitely not easy to plan an itinerary when you don’t have weeks to explore a country! 😵

For Thailand, you’ll be there during peak season. I’d avoid the most touristy beaches/islands, especially around Chinese New Year.

Too much vacation? Never! 😂

Hope you’ll make a beautiful travel journal when you get back Wink.

I’m not sure yet—I’m so behind on writing travel journals, and writing one about Thailand feels a little intimidating after reading some of the comments in the Southeast Asia section. I really should motivate myself to write a journal about our trip to Peru and the other trips we’ve taken since 2020. The closure of VF definitely changed my motivation, and I feel like I’m not the only one in this situation.

Sorry about your trip, but you’ll make up for it in 2027.🙂

Hi Carmen, If you only have about two weeks to get a taste of Thailand, in January or February—the time of year I’ve visited about ten times over the past 30 years—I’d suggest splitting your time like this: a few days in Bangkok, a few days in Chiang Mai, and a few days in Prachuap Khiri Khan, where you’ll find beautiful beaches, lively fishing activity, and most importantly, real Thai life—street food, food courts, traditional markets, great value accommodations, and prices marked for locals. It’s a bit far from Bangkok, and I’d avoid the minibuses because of their reckless driving. The train is a nice option (you’ll meet people, and vendors hop on at stops), and I’ve also taken a taxi. I’ve attached a few photos, including one from my travel journal taken in bad weather.

It’s not that difficult—at least both are in the southern part of the country. Thailand’s main road axis runs from Chiang Rai to Surat Thani. From Surat Thani, you can easily reach Khao Sok. You can combine it with visits to Prachuap, Chumphon, Krabi, and the stunning Phang Nga Bay, among others.

There’s no problem for those who publish travel journals. I’ve sometimes had issues with mine for various reasons, but that was before Covid, and the troublemakers haven’t come back since.

Marien33 is a bit... intense with his travel journals, and we’ve had some lively exchanges, but there’s no animosity. Not at all. In this journal, Attila gave us a great surprise with some stunning photos and unusual spots. The bar is set high, and I’d be thrilled if you took on this challenge.

I haven’t done a real big travel journal since 2019. My wife no longer wants her photos scattered online, and I respect her choice. It’s also worth noting that many Thailand lovers no longer want to share their great tips with those who benefit from their research without giving a little help in return.

Too bad, because in the meantime, we’ve meticulously explored the provinces of Nan and Phrae, and at another time, Prachuap. We’ve also recently finished covering the north of the country, discovering most of the spots we didn’t know yet, including the Mae Hong Son loop.

I sometimes can’t help but share a few opinions here—old habits die hard! 🙂 From time to time, I provide private info to a few carefully chosen people, not always from the forum. It’s something that takes forever, and few would be willing to put in that kind of effort.

And to make a travel journal, you still need to have photos... personally, I barely take any in Thailand anymore. Like, I'm not going to redo the millionth beach shot—there are already hundreds waiting to be sorted. Digital has multiplied the number of images a hundredfold; it’s become extremely time-consuming. Some people keep travel journals without photos. It’s a tougher exercise...🤪

For digital, I agree with you on the explosion of photos.

On top of that, there’s been a recent surge in heavily edited photos.

It ends up hiding reality and creating artificial hotspots for overtourism.

Not to mention the disappointment... "There weren’t that many people here!" "The colors are so dull!" Etc...

Hi Agnès,

This is especially true for agency photos, tourism office shots, and other promotional materials. The worst part is that our eyes have gotten used to oversaturated colors since the HDR trend. Google Images shows places enhanced by contrast and vibrant colors, but in reality, it’s way more muted! A few blogs still have honest photos, but with AI, it’s only going to get worse :/

Hey Kate,

Not sure if you follow any Facebook discussion groups, but the photos posted there are often edited.

Okay, the worst are definitely those from so-called influencers and tourism promotion agencies.🤪

It’s getting out of hand.

I sometimes tweak my photos a bit, but it’s just to match what my eye actually sees. Photos don’t always capture reality. I might also remove a power line, a hand, or something on the edge that I didn’t notice through the viewfinder.

Or sometimes I go all out for fun, like with AI-generated images.

What I also don’t like are drone photos when it’s not mentioned.

No, I’m not. I follow some photographer groups like “Street Art.” They don’t really discuss—people just post, and you comment if you want ;)

You’re absolutely right! And you’re not the first to do it. It’s been around since the days of film, in darkrooms… But today, with post-processing tools and AI, photography can become dishonest.

Hi Agnès,

I’m rereading your travel journal now. After reading dozens of journals and blogs, I can much better picture the places you visited. 🙂

Overtourism is definitely a big problem in Thailand, but we’re not spared in Europe either.

Krabi does seem too touristy, but there are still a few nice excursions to do. One thing’s for sure—we’ll be doing our sea trips on private boats.

I’m realizing that Thailand isn’t actually that cheap if you don’t want to take group tours and if you’re looking for slightly less crowded spots. Your example of Tub Kaek Beach is pretty telling. The view from that beach looks nice.

The woman who hassles her boyfriend for hours for the perfect portrait like I saw in the USA—it’s funny for 5 minutes, but for an entire vacation like that? No thanks!

Three spots take the top spots on the overcrowded podium. All are in Thailand.

Unfortunately, you can find that kind of woman everywhere. I saw some this summer in Vienna and in April in Peru. They don’t even hesitate to take those kinds of photos in churches or museums. I saw a report on Auschwitz—tourists striking poses in front of the crematoriums. It’s appalling.

I don’t doubt the places in the article from your link, but the author should brush up on their geography.

Anyway, I’ll keep reading—housework can wait.
AT Attila Globetrotter ·

I’m realizing that Thailand isn’t actually that cheap if you don’t want to take group tours and if you’re looking for places that aren’t too crowded.

Yeah, private excursions can really add up fast, but they’re really only a must for water-based activities.

Otherwise, you can skip them by renting a car.

Thailand is no longer a "budget" country for mid-range budgets.

It still offers one of the best value-for-money experiences on the planet.

There’s something for everyone—you can spend a fortune or very little.

Remember, you’ll feel overtourism much less during the off-season or in certain provinces.

For the off-season, I’d recommend June first, then July. This year was particularly rainy, so we can hope for better weather in the coming seasons.

That’s your take. Not mine. Maybe our budgets or our ways of traveling are different.

My trips to Morocco, Albania, and the Canary Islands were cheaper (under the same accommodation conditions).

The welcome in Morocco is warmer than in Thailand (accommodation-wise).

It’s the flight ticket price that really drives up the average, especially for a short stay when you want a certain level of comfort (meaning no super-long flights and with reputable airlines).

Accommodation prices have also gone up a lot.

I could afford luxury hotels in Thailand 10 years ago—those days are gone now.

Hey, it’s true that if you look at prices near Krabi—like the Banyan Tree or Amari—you’re dealing with international rates for luxury…

But Thailand is still a country where the range of accommodation prices is *really* wide… from 20 € to 2000 €… *poof poof*

For boats, those are long-tail boats you negotiate directly on the beach—they’re plentiful and not overpriced…
DJ Djalma Globetrotter ·
Thailand has modernized considerably to cater to a wealthier clientele that spends more than the average backpacker. Asian tourists, like the Chinese, don’t bat an eye at expenses, but if you’re happy with the kind of accommodation you’d find 20+ years ago—which still exists—and you eat at street food stalls, Thailand remains very budget-friendly.

It’s not so much that prices have gone up—it’s that tourists have become more demanding and no longer bother looking for cheaper options, whether for tours, food, or lodging. Now, there are boats for locals and others for tourists, and the same goes for all types of transport.

That said, I get that you don’t have the same priorities at 20 as you do at 60 or older.

Hello, it’s clear that if you look at the prices for Krabi at the Banyan Tree or the Amari, we’re talking international rates for luxury....

Uh, no, I didn’t look at luxury hotels. But I still want at least a minimum of comfort. That means a clean room, a good breakfast, a room with a window to the outside, friendly service, a private bathroom, and a nice location. Though, I adapt depending on the region I’m visiting. In the Southern Lipez Desert in Bolivia, a private bathroom wasn’t always possible, and the rooms were sometimes very basic. No choice for meals—you just eat what the locals offer. We even slept in the 4x4 several times in the middle of nowhere. We loved that trip! :) Same in Ladakh, in homestays where the comfort is very minimalist. You wash by the stream or at the village fountain and sleep on mats. I don’t even want to talk about the toilets. :D

Why misinformation?

If you're referring to the value for money of hotels and other things in Thailand, I did write I’m not convinced and I have the impression… That doesn’t mean my feelings are accurate. I haven’t been there yet, so I wouldn’t dare be definitive.
AT Attila Globetrotter ·
If I understand correctly, it's controversy time?😇

Thailand is no longer in the top 5 of budget-friendly countries for independent travelers looking for average comfort.

That doesn’t take away from the country’s qualities at all. It is what it is, that’s all.🙂

The country’s authorities have actually tried to upgrade their visitors. More well-filled wallets rather than broke hippies.

Still, we’re nowhere near the prices of Northern Europe, the US, Switzerland, etc. And I’ll say it again, the cost of the flight ticket really weighs down the travel budget.

My first trip there was in the very early 2000s. It’s nothing like it used to be.
