Which neighborhood to stay in in Boston?

Hello,

I have the chance to visit Boston for the holidays and I'm looking for accommodation. Any neighborhoods you’d recommend?

We’ll be there for about ten days and can rent a car or use public transit if needed. What do you suggest in the area? For now, we’re sticking to the city and will decide based on the weather.

See you soon,

Hi Arnaud, I forwarded your questions to a friend who’s been living in Boston since 2014—we’ll see if she has time to get back to you ;) Safe travels anyway!

I’ll send you their email in a PM.

Back in Alsace for good![:)] But a bit further north than where we’re from... [;)] We live in the Northern Vosges now, and I work in Moselle.

Awesome, is she in the loop? Thanks a million!

Yep, she knows! If you wanna write to her right now, it’s still daytime over there [;)]

Awesome, thanks and welcome back to the area! The Vosges are great [:)]

Check out Quincy. It's a bit outside of Boston (to be cheaper), close to a subway station (or commuter train, I can't remember which), and Boston is easily accessible by car (watch out for parking prices!). In 2015, we stayed at the Best Western Adams Inn. It was perfect at the time, but recent reviews on TA don't seem as glowing...

You didn’t ask, but just in case... 10 days in Boston will feel long! 2 days, max 3, is plenty.

For the rest: - You can take a day trip to Salem (round-trip in one day). - 2 days for Mystic and Newport: one day driving to Mystic, visiting the town and the naval museum, then staying overnight in Mystic (it’s cheaper). The next day, head to Newport and return to Boston. - And 2 or 3 days for Cape Cod—book a hotel there (Yannis or West Dennis are a bit out of the way, but the hotels are cheaper).

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. We're wondering if Cape Cod is worth it at the end of December? We'll see about the other places. We've noted Salem for a day trip visit.

Cape Cod for the wild side, yeah I think so, even in December. I don’t know if Provincetown will be as lively as in the summer, but a little trip could be nice. No idea if it’ll be the right time to go whale watching, but there are quite a few summer hikes from Provincetown.

But also because 10 days in Boston is 8 too many ;)

You can take a quick look at my travel journal: For Boston and the surrounding area: https://voyageforum.com/v.f?post=7483333;a=7483333

Thanks for the links and travel journals—I’ll dive into them!

Second option is a one-way from Washington DC to Boston by train, with a stop in Philly in between. We’ve already been to NYC.

Second option is a one-way from Washington DC to Boston by train, with a stop in Philly in between. We’ve already been to NYC.

That could actually work: - 3 days in Washington - 3 days in Philadelphia, including half a day for the Philly-DC trip. And 1 day for the Amish Country, though not sure there’s much to see this time of year. Maybe an extra day in DC instead—there’s plenty to do! For example, a day trip by car to visit Thomas Jefferson’s plantation. - 1 day for the trip to Boston - 3 days in Boston, including a day trip to Salem and the surrounding area.

It’s a solid plan

That makes sense, yeah! [:)]
